Boxing is  a sport for low lifes , where the participants are low lifes.
I wouldnt say theres any great surprise that this happened at a weigh in.
It was a gangland killing, nothing more.

What a disgrace. Some serious action needs to be taken so people don't think they can get away with sh*t like that.

It's got to do with boxing as they run the gym in Marbella that the likes of Matthew Macklin is attached too. I presume this hit was retaliation to the murder of Gerry Hutch's nephew a while back

It raises serious question marks about the most basic competency levels of the Garda intelligence unit and state security.

The Irish Independent and Sunday world didn't have journalists at the weigh in for the sake of it.

A Garda presence was planned for the fight but couldn't figure out the weigh in could be a viable alternative target.

After the Hutch murder, the involvement of the Kinahan gang with these boxers was referred to in the mainstream media and possible retribution was earmarked for a fight in late 2015. Like the Green and Gold they didn't strike with the handicap debutante but did on their second opportunity.

You would see local bars and restaurants being ran more diligently than the highest levels of the Gardai, I would equate this to a scenario that every small town encounters with a traveler's funeral. The probability of trouble is high and hence precautions are taken.

The current brand of terrorism doesn't care about our neutrality status and many of them probably associate  us with the UK

Could you find a softer target than the Irish security services? Would you have confidence in them putting preventative measures in place or being capable of responding to cohesive attacks?

Two big funerals this week, so far...Eleven years ago was the last time there was anything like this (3 murdered in 36 hours as part of Crumlin/Drimnagh feud). Same Christy Kinahan Gang behind tonight's murder.

It's known several relations of the late Gerry Hutch had left the North-Inner city (Poplar Row, North Strand) after Regency murder, over fears an attack like tonight's would happen. Crime now the dominant election issue !

Fair Dues to Rte's Paul Reynolds for immediately asking the Garda commissioner the extremely obvious question how wasn't there any Garda presence at the weigh in despite the media being there and the Gardai having a full scale operation planned for the fight night.

Her feeble reply that gangsters attend all types of sporting events is incompetent. Someone has obviously dropped the ball at various levels but there isn't any culpability in the public service.

The Garda sergant's representatives utilising this opportunity to highlight the issue of dwindling resources also lacks authenticity, on a Friday Lunch time there wouldn't have being any pressure on resources in the city centre and it's just pure incompetence.

As for the gullible BBC reported that swallowed the decoy CIRA claim.

as ever, it is only when the catastrophe is threatened that we see every government agency wears no clothes. Pretty clear to anyone in the post-Dukes days that Ban Garda Commissioner was a PC plod.

whistleblowers are still treated abominably and "thou shalt not rock the boat" is the Hippocratic oath of the civil service. apart from pulling in the cheque are our institutions so bereft of accountability that no-one at the top has a shred of ambition to improve matters?

It takes the "Veronica Guerins" before anything happens, foisted upon unwilling agencies by dint of sheer public frustration. Whistleblowers, dead thugs, dare I say even special needs abused foster children don't count, we are still awaiting the next "big ticket" item.

Meanwhile, Michael Lowry's mug adorns more lamp posts in Tipperary than any other candidate.....excuse me while I puke (again)

Don't fall for this all whistleblowers are good, they are not.

One particular whistleblower now demanding compensation was no good at his job and used whistle blowing to cover it up.

A fair amount of us are happy enough to see some of these thugs engage in some kind of winnowing process.
I know the Gardai have to play along and act grave and concerned but deep down they are having a quiet chuckle.

You don't need to preach to me about the occasional questionable whistleblower Wildman; fact is this country doesn't want them unless it's a subject that doesn't cause us to question our internal, national processes in which probably 50% of the population have a vested interest.

on the basis of your personal, selective knowledge of the gardai i'm surprised they didn't allow the "pro-democracy" thugs run Pegida into the Liffey last weekend? now that would have been funny.
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 10 Feb 16 12:45
You are bringing up a subject that's unmentionable.

Would it be funny if people with a legitimate view were run into the Liffey ?
If you dislike a viewpoint argue against it with logic and reason don't resort to violence.

Where does it stop, the leader of a political party ( admittedly one with little support ) was waylaid on public transport on his way into the march,he was assaulted and injured.
Sinn Fein members patrolled the quays questioning people as to where they were going and warning people off.
The march would have been tiny but what happened was wrong.

Its all being hushed up but what happened Saturday was wrong.
It did give us one telling line " we are the anti fascists "
The person uttering this thought it gave them carte Blanche to inflict violence on the ones they deemed the fascists and was amazed when the Gardai prevented them.

I'm afraid you missed my ironic "funny" to your "chuckle".

I don't have extreme views-I actually agree that the "anti's" showed themselves up for what they were on Saturday, using the opportunity to get across a range of equally unsavoury views and you can spot insidious influence of sinn fein and other protest-based campaigns in most events.

Cologne muddies the waters unquestionably but I would place my faith in non-nonsense policing to sort that out together with re-settling policies that eschews ghettoisation. We need similar zero-tolerance here to deal with those itching for a scrap. This is what happens when the middle ground is forsaken and relatively extreme, unwavering views are held on both sides. Our European existence has been unusually civilised for seven decades but every scrap in the world (in a world that is no less barbaric that centuries ago) reminds me we are one or two nutcases away from disaster at any time.
