Boxing is a sport for low lifes , where the participants are low lifes. I wouldnt say theres any great surprise that this happened at a weigh in. It was a gangland killing, nothing more.

It's got to do with boxing as they run the gym in Marbella that the likes of Matthew Macklin is attached too. I presume this hit was retaliation to the murder of Gerry Hutch's nephew a while back

It raises serious question marks about the most basic competency levels of the Garda intelligence unit and state security.
The Irish Independent and Sunday world didn't have journalists at the weigh in for the sake of it.
A Garda presence was planned for the fight but couldn't figure out the weigh in could be a viable alternative target.
After the Hutch murder, the involvement of the Kinahan gang with these boxers was referred to in the mainstream media and possible retribution was earmarked for a fight in late 2015. Like the Green and Gold they didn't strike with the handicap debutante but did on their second opportunity.
You would see local bars and restaurants being ran more diligently than the highest levels of the Gardai, I would equate this to a scenario that every small town encounters with a traveler's funeral. The probability of trouble is high and hence precautions are taken.
The current brand of terrorism doesn't care about our neutrality status and many of them probably associate us with the UK
Could you find a softer target than the Irish security services? Would you have confidence in them putting preventative measures in place or being capable of responding to cohesive attacks?

Two big funerals this week, so far...Eleven years ago was the last time there was anything like this (3 murdered in 36 hours as part of Crumlin/Drimnagh feud). Same Christy Kinahan Gang behind tonight's murder.

It's known several relations of the late Gerry Hutch had left the North-Inner city (Poplar Row, North Strand) after Regency murder, over fears an attack like tonight's would happen. Crime now the dominant election issue !

Fair Dues to Rte's Paul Reynolds for immediately asking the Garda commissioner the extremely obvious question how wasn't there any Garda presence at the weigh in despite the media being there and the Gardai having a full scale operation planned for the fight night.
Her feeble reply that gangsters attend all types of sporting events is incompetent. Someone has obviously dropped the ball at various levels but there isn't any culpability in the public service.
The Garda sergant's representatives utilising this opportunity to highlight the issue of dwindling resources also lacks authenticity, on a Friday Lunch time there wouldn't have being any pressure on resources in the city centre and it's just pure incompetence.
As for the gullible BBC reported that swallowed the decoy CIRA claim.

as ever, it is only when the catastrophe is threatened that we see every government agency wears no clothes. Pretty clear to anyone in the post-Dukes days that Ban Garda Commissioner was a PC plod.
whistleblowers are still treated abominably and "thou shalt not rock the boat" is the Hippocratic oath of the civil service. apart from pulling in the cheque are our institutions so bereft of accountability that no-one at the top has a shred of ambition to improve matters?
It takes the "Veronica Guerins" before anything happens, foisted upon unwilling agencies by dint of sheer public frustration. Whistleblowers, dead thugs, dare I say even special needs abused foster children don't count, we are still awaiting the next "big ticket" item.
Meanwhile, Michael Lowry's mug adorns more lamp posts in Tipperary than any other candidate.....excuse me while I puke (again)

Don't fall for this all whistleblowers are good, they are not.
One particular whistleblower now demanding compensation was no good at his job and used whistle blowing to cover it up.
A fair amount of us are happy enough to see some of these thugs engage in some kind of winnowing process. I know the Gardai have to play along and act grave and concerned but deep down they are having a quiet chuckle.

You don't need to preach to me about the occasional questionable whistleblower Wildman; fact is this country doesn't want them unless it's a subject that doesn't cause us to question our internal, national processes in which probably 50% of the population have a vested interest.
on the basis of your personal, selective knowledge of the gardai i'm surprised they didn't allow the "pro-democracy" thugs run Pegida into the Liffey last weekend? now that would have been funny.

You are bringing up a subject that's unmentionable.
Would it be funny if people with a legitimate view were run into the Liffey ? If you dislike a viewpoint argue against it with logic and reason don't resort to violence.
Where does it stop, the leader of a political party ( admittedly one with little support ) was waylaid on public transport on his way into the march,he was assaulted and injured. Sinn Fein members patrolled the quays questioning people as to where they were going and warning people off. The march would have been tiny but what happened was wrong.
Its all being hushed up but what happened Saturday was wrong. It did give us one telling line " we are the anti fascists " The person uttering this thought it gave them carte Blanche to inflict violence on the ones they deemed the fascists and was amazed when the Gardai prevented them.

I'm afraid you missed my ironic "funny" to your "chuckle".
I don't have extreme views-I actually agree that the "anti's" showed themselves up for what they were on Saturday, using the opportunity to get across a range of equally unsavoury views and you can spot insidious influence of sinn fein and other protest-based campaigns in most events.
Cologne muddies the waters unquestionably but I would place my faith in non-nonsense policing to sort that out together with re-settling policies that eschews ghettoisation. We need similar zero-tolerance here to deal with those itching for a scrap. This is what happens when the middle ground is forsaken and relatively extreme, unwavering views are held on both sides. Our European existence has been unusually civilised for seven decades but every scrap in the world (in a world that is no less barbaric that centuries ago) reminds me we are one or two nutcases away from disaster at any time.

HUTCH v KINAHAN .....the 2016 edition is billed as the ‘Clash of the Clans’ live from Dublin, Ireland.
Round 1. The Regency Shooting is linked to a failed murder attempt by the Hutch Gang at the Red Cow last November when the gun jammed. At least ten men from that north-inner city Gang had been warned their lives were in danger after a row with an Irish gang in Spain after the Gary Hutch murder, a nephew of ‘The Monk’ Gerry Hutch. This murder by a 6-man hit squad is the one the most planned attacks in Irish gangland history and had all the hallmarks of being organised by the major north-inner city criminal ‘The Monk’, a semi-retired and master planner of major bank robberies. http://www.sundayworld.com/news/crimedesk/video-shock-footage-emerges-from-a... Other video footage of the aftermath is circulating and freely available on-line. The 34 year-old criminal shot dead, David Byrne from Crumlin, was regarded as being in charge of logistics for Kinahan cartel's drugs shipments. The other victims were Sean McGovern, Crumlin and Aaron Bolger from Tallaght but are not regarded as being involved with the Kinahan Gang although they are pals of the victim. Byrne was extremely well-known to gardai because of his involvement in gangland criminality and was cleared of firearms charges in relation to a shooting incident as far back as August, 2008 connected to this same feud. The two well-known brothers David & Liam Byrne from Raleigh Square in Crumlin, regarded as senior members of the Christy Kinahan Gang, were both in the hotel when the shots were fired. Daniel Kinahan, a very senior Gang figure and also in MGM Boxing Promotions was involved with the fight promotion. One of the boxers at the Regency weigh-in was Jamie Kavanagh. His father Gerard 'Hatchet' was murdered by his own gang in Spain last April while Jamie has no involvement in crime. Byrne's funeral is expected to take place in Dublin's south inner city this Friday, amidst the threat of all-out gang war in the city, but details of this have not yet been finalised. Hutch 1 Kinahan 0.
Round 2. The bell for round two is seen as a major escalation as Eddie Hutch Snr, Gerry’s brother, was shot in the north-inner city in revenge for David Byrne’s Regency murder as Gerry was known to be very close to Eddie. This murder of the innocent Eddie Hutch, a petty criminal with no involvement in organised crime, has led to fears of other ‘soft targets’ could be singled out for revenge attacks in this developing nightmare scenario. The Gang behind this latest murder, led by Christy Kinahan, probably only comprises of 25 core members but has a lot of logistical backing. Hutch 1 Kinahan 1.
Meanwhile in other breaking news... Gardaí have revealed that just over €900,000 worth of cocaine (13 kilos) was found after a house was searched in Tallaght.

McGregor is one of wonkys pals , he was on here telling us we should be proud of him, and what a great ambassador he was for the people of Ireland. And what about the people who were original saying the shooting was a disgrace, the funeral was a disgrace , but the shooting wasn't.

I'm near demented going to funerals, the recent trend is for garish vulgar emotionalism followed by jaunty pop songs. People getting into the pulpit and telling ribald stories about the deceased. The worst of all is the symbols of the deceased life,a packet of cigarettes and a bottle of Guinness in one case, this has no place in a church.
I've strict instructions,no eulogy,no symbols and only hymns. One request is for the attendees to pray for me because I will need all the help I can get.
The Catholic Church addressed the problem, they vet the hymns and have stopped the regaling of stories from the altar. This wasn't done in this caes, the Church was bought for the hour and they acted as if they owned it.
Did anyone else get the irony of the Gardai being masked and the gangsters openly strutting down Dublin streets.

FIVE feud murders in less than 12 weeks. It’s a death toll thought to be unprecedented in gangland in Ireland.http://www.irishexaminer.com/viewpoints/analysis/rate-of-gang-killings-unprecedented-395199.html
A good chunk of this gang where back in the country for the funeral of David Byrne, what did our police do? They gave them a garda escort from the airport to wherever they where staying, gave them 24hr security, gave them an escort to and from the funeral and then back to the airport. Unbelievable.
They could have done what the Northern police done at the funeral in Strabane and go in and arrest people who where known criminals but no not in out mental country.

Just my take on Irish pro scene, I don't watch amateur boxing.
Jason Quigley got a very bad hand injury winning the other night and needs surgery. Pretty much explains why his power evaporated after the third. Isn't as quick as I had thought. He'd have been expected to stop his oponent.
Don't really know what the lad who won Olympic Silver Nevin is doing (I'd say not much), not sure he had the style for the pros anyway (very watery amateur points-scoring stuff). The likes of Lomachenko and Davis at Super-Feather would end him, I'm not sure are his aspirations that high any more anyway.
A lot seems to be resting on Conlan, who I wouldn't be sure about character wise. He'll end up matched very hard beyond a certain point as those lowers weights are always full of killers.
Don't think Paddy Barnes is quite as good as he thinks he is and has left it too late.
Burnett from Belfast might wind up the best of the current crop.

Conlon will be the best fighter ever to come out of this island, he'll have Frampton matched and passed out within 2/3 yes imo. Barnes is out of his league now, a poor journeyman pro at best unless he gets it handed on a plate to him B Dunne style, even then he's probably not good enough and his promoters don't have that pull anyway. As for the Kinahan, I'd say plenty of their seized cars were in that Garda warehouse that went up on fire the other night

I think the Olympic and world medals can be deceptive re what they will translate to in the pros.
There are a lot of talented, natural fighters in the US and Latin America that turn pro early and don't bother with international amateur competition. They chase the buck.
I'm talking about the likes of Jorge linares, Gervonta Davis, Mikey Garcia, Canelo Alvarez, there are loads of them and make no mistake, they are just as skilled and even more so than the amateurs as they are natural fighters born to the game fighting since the age of 6 or 7.
I thought Conlan looked a little wild on debut. He fights at Super Bantam, Pacman, Marquez, Barrera and Morales all fought there without coming from international amateur competition, were all punch perfect and if there is another one of these on the production line, Conlan is getting it!

Meanwhile more news..... Man found shot dead is son of Noel 'Duck Egg' Kirwan - Kane McCormack, whose body was found on the Kildare/Meath border at approximately noon yesterday - a 24-year-old convicted criminal from Dublin. The grim discovery was made by a woman out walking at Walterstown, in a field adjacent to Aldi in Dunboyne.
McCormack, also known as Kane Kirwan, had been reported missing by his girlfriend at Blanchardstown Garda station just hours before his body was discovered. He had been formally warned his life was in danger by Gardaí from the Kinahan crime cartel over fears he would seek revenge for father Noel’s murder last December. He was before the courts last month on firearms charges after a large quantity of ammunition was found in Dublin last year. At the time of the court case, he was released on bail but his defence lawyer asked that his next court date not be read out in open court as there was "a threat on his life". It is understood he had also narrowly avoided a previous attempt on his life. His father - Noel 'Duck Egg' Kirwan - was a close friend of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch. Noel Kirwan, The 62-year-old was sitting in a car outside his house in St Ronan’s Drive, in Clondalkin on December 22 last when he was shot several times. He was the tenth person to die in the Hutch-Kinahan feud. His partner was in the passenger seat was but was not injured in the shooting.
Now Gardai are investigating if his son was the 13th victim - and the first since May. McCormack was also close associate of another victim of the Hutch/Kinahan feud and Gardai are now investigating if this murder was another in the feud that has been ongoing for over two years. The Kinahan/Hutch feud has claimed 12 victims since violence erupted almost two years ago. Earlier this month, Gardai told Dublin City Councillors that more than 45,000 Garda checkpoints have been carried out in response to the Kinahan-Hutch feud. They have made 101 arrests and 281 searches.

The scale of this is mind numbing and would give the Cosa Nostra in Sicily a run for its money. Yet, apart from keeping that mini cabal of "security correspondents" employed and safeguarding the existence of a national Sunday cartoon newspaper in business for decades (soap opera, Irish style) it hardly registers with the general population. The impact is on those on the bottom rung (or even worse, in the mire) with their drug issues and wasted lives.
We are a remarkable country in that parochialism is the ultimate arbiter of what constitutes good politics whilst the real will to solve problems resides in text books and not in human beings. Every crisis we face ultimately tells us that the status quo cannot be unsettled. (why, for example, would we not deploy the army as the custodians of martial law or use them in some other imaginative ways rather than treat them as badly paid workriders as in the bloodstock industry?)
