If you sign up for the UK honours then you must accept the principle of a monarchy as well as the history that comes with it. To be fair, these honours seem to be just hdaned out to anyone who plays a positive role in UK society. Do people really care about them or is it just another media driven piece of over hyped nonsense? |

Properly applied there is nothing intrinsically wrong with "honours lists" , be they awarded by monarchs or governments . They should be used more sparingly though , and more recently there have been a spate of awards to sports people , balancing out awards to post mistresses of 40 years service etc .
Only one of the people I know personally with an award did not deserve the recognition fully ( in my opinion ) as all they did was teach for a substantial part of their life , hardly heroic or of outstanding contribution to society above the norm . Others have refused honours ( generally because of political connotations ) , some have the honour but "kept it quiet" , Northern Ireland being what it is , GAA prominent members among them . AP's interview surprised me a bit , I would have been taking the line that it was an award for the racing industry , a la SPOTY . And he certainly deserves the award for achievement compared with some people from other walks of life . Living and working mainly in England an award is of much more significance than in Ireland , society there being what it is , and the people on the other side of the Irish Sea respond innately to anything associated with monarchy . Wont do AP any harm , he is well grounded , not sure exactly what sort of activity he will be involved in come a few years on though . |
