3 NHF wins this season (Ok Mullins has good'un after good'un) but still pathetic and only 17 wins between hurdles and chases.

The relentness negativity here regarding trainers'ability or any effort to discuss spreading the cost of ownership is depressing. The fact of the matter is that there are very few owners any more to keep the average joe going. You have to earn forty grand a year to put a horse in training and 85% of them are useless. Nothing new there except the economic crisis now denies people "spare" money as thrift is the order of the day. A trainer, with a completely professional set-up needs a minimum of forty horses to have any hope of a return on his efforts so unless they are dealing, pinhooking or middle man the cupboard is bare. the dominance of the top owners is mind numbing, the Mullins monopoly keeps racegoers at home and those that can afford a horse in training are either choosing GB or simply not supporting the game that's giving many of them handsome returns today. so, rocket, the answer to your question is: "no foot (feet), no horse" Fewer younger people will choose this game as its too tough to start from scratch and why mullock around for 60 hours a week when there's easier opportunities to make more money. Meanwhile, we are already facing an over-production crisis in the NH sphere with lots of foals valueless as they won't be placed in training. |

Those points you make have nothing whatsoever to do with Noel Meade, he has more big owners than he ever had in his life.
Whilst Mullins and Elliott are taking the game to a different level, Noel who must be nearly 90 was sending out his wedding invitations. The one thing he can hardly complain about is lack of support, in fact his efforts over the last 10 years do not warrant a fraction of the backing he's getting from the likes of McManus Gigginstown and them long suffering Northern family with the pink colours. |

Rocket is putting up figures that make little sense if you look at Meade's record over the last 12 years. Average NH strike-rate 12 years: 15%; last 6 years: 15%, previous 6 years: 15%..................this year: 14.1%.....so, nothing happening here that justifies a headline that rocket posted which basically suggests he's lost it. From his peak number of runners a few years back his runners dropped by 56% in 2012 and by 40% last year but he's held his strike-rate. It's just the usual playing the man here - with gratuitous insults if possible - and ignore the stats. Cheltenham: I'm not carrying any card for Noel Meade - he trained a few syndicate winners for me in the past - but at least he's able to enjoy himself after a win and the happy connections will always appreciate that on their few big days. why the need to bring his private life into it? |

You could be right Royal, the suggestion that he has lost it may well be wide of the mark. The suggestion from those statistics is that he never ever really had it in the first place. His record at the Cheltenham festival backs up that theory as do the annual mid season lulls , the ones that the likes of Willie Mullins never ever get.
He failed as a flat trainer and in a career spanning 40 years, he has trained the same number of winners at Cheltenham as Jim Culloty. Willie Mullins could win more races there in a day than Meade would win in a lifetime, and even at this stage what price would he be to have a winner there this year, huge odds against is my guess. The ability to enjoy himself is not in question, but if i was sending somebody a horse, that wouldnt really be a factor that i would be considering. |

Has father time caught up on Noel, a bit like Eddie O Grady , the main owners involved in the HIGH STREET were Clane based and while Patrick was interred by the Jesuits he managed to secure their patronage and hence QUevega etc.
Noel was a fine trainer but maybe the type of horse he trains is the issue, he concentrated on light framed types and has very few strong deep bodied chasers. Also his blind loyalty to his jockey might have cost him at different stages. Owner base and the attraction of young wealthy owners has a lot to do with a trainer prospering and Noel for different reasons might have fallen down a little in this department. A good guy who trained Sweet Mint to win a Cork and Orrery many moons ago. |
