Sad sad news.

I loved him as a jockey,remember his great battles as an apprentice with Philip Waldron.
I thought Grundy a champion who made Pat Edderry into the top jockey he undoubtedly was.

His father Jimmy Edderry was Irish Champion jockey,Pat amazingly was Irish champion when based in England.

That extra R I gave them looks ridiculous.

A great jockey by any standards , what a pleasure it was to see him on Irish racecourses in the early eighties when his strike rate was phenomenal not just for MVOB but also a young John Oxx. RIP

Have ye know memories of him.
He was Irish champion jockey in 1982,I don't have the figures but he had some record in the Phoenix Park,some record riding for John Oxx.

You cannot blame them for not coming on the thread and giving fake tributes about somebody they perhaps did not even see ride (or barely at the end of his career). I cannot remember any of his rides bar vaguely Silver Patriarch in the Leger.

Was thinking about it yesterday and it feels like an old schoolmate that you knew and liked, played on teams with etc but have not seen for years. Pat is like that in that he provided great days but effectively disappeared after his riding career, with lack of success to any extent at training.

I would guess that many people that watched his races will share a few memories over the coming days over some pints, rather than post something up here, especially when as PF said, many will not recall his rides without recourse to youtube and are not interested in the subject matter.

I recall my namesake winning the Sussex Stakes in 1994. Julian Wilson and Jimmy Lindley described them pre-race, Sir Peter called him home and Pat rode him for Sir Henry. Only Jimmy now survives from this famous five. Those days on the BBC were great and are not remotely challenged in terms of their enjoyment by the production teams of today.

Glorious Goodwood was always the mid point of the summer before I had to go back to school, I used to try to get a 10 pence yankee on in the bookies if some man would go in for me.
Pat would be on at least two of the four picks, when he was wearing the Prince Khalid Abdullah colours he was exceptional (to me), he was riding winners for Jeremy Tree back then.
When Fallon got Bosra Sham beaten in the Eclipse, I repeated to myself that Pat wouldn't have gotten her beat, which eased the pain of not having any money to head out with the lads for pints.

A proper jockey and always came across as a gent. Didn't realise he was in poor physical health. Never knew he was Toby Atkinson's father until today either.Golden Fleece's derby the race that stands out for me.

That's unbelievably sad.

The only knowledge of him I'd have in a first-hand sense is Hearts of Fire who won the Brocklesby for him but was much much better than that. Was a good analogy for his training career really as the horse shouldn't really have been in that race really given what he went on to do.

Any of about 5 jocks who rode in his era would probably be the best around today. Saw him on that Sporting Heroes show on Sky last night from a few years ago, he looked nothing like the pictures we see in the paper today.

Had it all,used to love seeing him ride but I wasn't a fan of his style change later on in his career,very young age to go,RIP.
