Why does the LE Niamh wait for the boats crammed with migrants to call for help.

The obvious solution is go into port and take the migrants straight to Italy.

This gets rid of the traffickers and removes the danger.

The simple reason is Libya have said they will shoot down any boats that enter their waters without permission, think they sunk a Turkish boat a few months ago.
Report Racingqueen August 5, 2015 5:39 PM BST
its all horse5hite PR from the sham politicians that inhabit this country.  It means the left win tree hugging liberals of Ireland can backslap each other as a progressive nation.......The "Armies" (LaughCrazy) "Peace Keeping" duties in Lebanon is another example.....minute ISIS appeared to be getting to close a few months back, there was talk of pulling them out.....all for show and the marketing benefit of those in power.
Report wildmanfromborneo August 5, 2015 6:28 PM BST
Look for permission,I notice they aren't shooting down any of those boats crammed with migrants.

Surely cutting out the middle man is the way forward.

Dumping them on Italy isint fair either, ask them where they want to go and then head for Dover.

I wonder has M O'L considered setting up a base out there, for e2000 a man I'm sure he'd take their bags for free, and drop them within 100km of their final destination
Report wildmanfromborneo August 5, 2015 7:32 PM BST
100 kilometres from their final destination would be Rosslare,I'd be against that.

Far better to drop them in Calais, that's only 20 miles from their destination.

Seems as if all is lost, they are getting in. Anti Racism Network has welcomed that yer man found wandering the road in Naas has been now put in the "asylum process", should he not still be in prison as he entered the country illegally? now he is being subsidised by the taxpayer, are we for real?
Report pa lapsy August 6, 2015 11:48 PM BST
Simon Coveney spends the day lauding the Le Niamh, if Le Niamh didn't launch the two survey boats that caused the migrant ship to capsize how many less bodies would there be? Not Le Niamhs fault except inadvertently but not really worthy of praise either.
Report wildmanfromborneo August 7, 2015 8:26 AM BST
No one sees the damage the LE Niamh is doing.
The traffickers know the LE Niamh is at their beck and call so they are now using boats that aren't seaworthy.

The pension laden Peter Sutherland is on demanding we take in more of these unfortunates, the logical position for the back slapping brigade is to send the LE Niamh into port, cut out the traffickers thus ruling out the dangers and take them straight to Ireland.

Portlaoise seems a good place to house them, very tolerant people there and sure we can borrow the money to fund this sponsorship.

Rte headline, "Le Niamh arrives in Italy with 367 rescued immigrants"
BBC, "The boat capsized when those on board spotted an Irish naval vessel and rushed to one side".
Report pa lapsy August 7, 2015 10:21 AM BST
Coveney " The rescue operation is a testament to the Irish naval services"
Coveney on Morning Ireland, " Le Niamh was first on the scene and the crew had saved 367 people".
A lot being left out.
Report winsamsoon August 7, 2015 1:06 PM BST
Top EU officials Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso have unequivocally welcomed reports that former Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi is dead.
Often criticised for reacting late to world events and mired in the gloom of the euro crisis, the two men in a joint statement published amid breaking news of the killing said: "The reported death of Muammar Gaddafi marks the end of an era of despotism and repression from which the Libyan people have suffered for too long" and called for a process of national "reconciliation."
They were pipped to the post only by Gaddafi's one-time friend, Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi, who one hour earlier said: "The war is over" and quoted a latin proverb "sic tranist gloria mundi", meaning "so passes the glory of this world."
British leader David Cameron later added: "I'm proud of the role Britain has played and I pay tribute to the bravery of the Libyans who helped liberate their country."
French defence minister Gerard Longuet noted: "If it's confirmed, it's a good outcome."

Wonder do they still think the same??

the irish government will have f**k all to do with the solution that sooner or later  will be implemented to the crisis in the mediterranean.i am proud of the crew of the le niamh on this humanitarian mission rescuing refugees.under the geneva convention these refugees should be helped and as a small country,we are doing our bit.
Report pa lapsy August 9, 2015 4:42 PM BST
Why don't ya offer to house and feed one or two of the refugees Rat?  It's the way forward instead of giving out the ould false sympathy, adopt a hands on approach.

get a grip old pa.why are you so bitter?is it because you had to leave?the men and women on the le niamh love their country and are doing what is right by international law.
Report pa lapsy August 9, 2015 10:11 PM BST
I,ve no doubt they do Rat,still they inadvertently caused the loss of hundreds of lives during the week, the Irish media dressed it up as a great humanitarian effort and leaned very heavily on how they rescued them,Coveney was in overdrive lauding them but the harsh reality is if they weren't there very likely those people would be alive.
Big difference between those being persecuted and economic migrants,up to yourself to decide which is the majority but i wouldn't rely too heavily on the Irish media.

Report pa lapsy August 9, 2015 10:35 PM BST
Clueless, but you are happy enough being fed by the country's media that everything is simply wonderful, that they are doing a great job,it is all justified etc.Do you not think the Le Niamh should have been slow to approach after the exact same thing happened in April, again with the loss of hundreds of lives?
Report wildmanfromborneo August 9, 2015 10:42 PM BST
How many of these human beings would Kingrat let in and how would he fund their support.

By his emotional reasoning we should accept around 200,000 of them,it still won't solve the problem we will just have to keep on letting them in because they are desperate.

The crew of the LE Niamh are involved in a criminal conspiracy with the traffickers, they don't deserve praise they should be charged with treason.

Report wildmanfromborneo August 11, 2015 10:22 PM BST
America is a huge country and in those days savagely under populated.
They wanted people and there was no welfare,if you didnt make it there you went home,30% of them did just that.

Europe doesn't want immigrants,it especially doesn't want Muslim immigrants.
This present Darwinian winnowing means the strong survive.
We don't know how many of them are Jihadists but we do know Islam is a threat to our civilisation.

How many would Kingrat let in ?
Report kingrat August 11, 2015 10:59 PM BST

Have no doubts the presence of the LE Niamh in the Meditteranean  caused the death of those 40 migrants that suffocated.

The traffickers know they have an ally in the Irish Navy, they are using unseaworthy boats because they don't have to travel far, they don't need much diesel.

The alliance of the Irish Navy and the traffickers is wrong and will cause more deaths.
Report kavvie August 16, 2015 2:14 PM BST

heros!the clash will be playing to the crowd as the  boys and girls that stand by the republic comes back home to port!LoveCool
Report wildmanfromborneo August 21, 2015 3:39 PM BST
The Clash might be apt as if the LE Niamh were so concerned about these migrants they would have brought them here.

That would have caused some clash and would have done plenty for our homeless crisis

The crew should hang there heads in shame, they were involved in people smuggling, they made fortunes for the people smugglers.
They also caused the death of some migrants, their presence in the Meditteranean, their lightning response to the smugglers whistle has emboldened the smugglers to cutback on diesel and use unseaworthy boats.

The LE Niamh will go down as Ireland's deadliest ship.
She has been responsible for more migrant deaths than all the other boats running that particular smuggling service.

Le Samuel Beckett continues the "good work", 218 "rescued" according to our surely non biased national media. Reports say they were picked up near the Libyan city of Tripoli. Is it "rescuing" them or picking them up outside the harbour?
The immigration council of Ireland are now making demands of how to integrate these "refugees" and why won't they as they now have something to do. The CEO of that organisation is branding them all as "fleeing for their lives" and has long term plans of reuniting them with their loved ones, that i presume is in Ireland, lovely as that must mean for each one the extended family is also invited.
