He did incorrectly say that I got to the front in the QE11 Stakes in 1994, when a beaten favourite behind Maroof, but other than that it is hard to fault him!

RIP

He cared .  About horses and people associated with the racing game . Irreplaceable .

Did not know he was born in Kenmare , guess that made him a Kerryman to boot .

Not many commentators that you can replay the finish in your head.

Arkle vs Millhouse, Dawn Run winning the Gold Cub & of course Desert Orchid finally winning in 89.

Never forget his commentary on Attivos's Triumph Hurdle win, never an inkling in his voice that he was the owner until he read out the Trainer, jockey etc after the race.

Loved his voice,RIP.

A really lovely gentleman, spoke with him on the phone once when I worked in London in the 90s, some great memories of his dulcet tones calling brilliant races over the years.

Pretty sure that he was actually born up north in Newcastle, Co. Down, when most people thought he was from the Kingdom?

RIP

Pretty sure he wasn't born in Newcastle , Co Down , Mckenna , otherwise we would have known about that .  Wiki says Kenmare .

I was at Cheltenham on Gold Cup day in 1974 ( Captain Christy et al ) , so didn't hear the Attivo commentary , which I believe was the first race on the card that day . Know the winner got a rousing reception in the winners enclosure even if it wasn't trained in Ireland .

In latter years he disclosed that he was born in Newcastle hence the confusion.
