Paul Dunne

He was in a share of the lead going into the last round,it was imo justified, fact nerves got the better of him was a pity. He seems like a quiet unassuming fella though granted he was slow. Big respect to Louis Oosthuizen who partnered him on his 3rd round and was genuinely willing him on,i hoped he would win the play off for that alone.

I'm not decrying Dunne's performance at all-it's the media that were making eejits of themselves. He was being built up as the second coming ,an heir to Bobby Jones ,a rival for Rory McIlroy etc. I just found out now he only finished the 4th best amateur !
All the hype was premature -wait until the final result is in and then calmly assess it. Dunne himself said that it was no great big deal that amateurs were scoring well. First of all -the top layer of amateurs are  professional in everything but name -given the time they devote to practice and the intensive world-class coaching and facilities they enjoy.
Secondly -St. Andrew's with soft greens and no wind was a glorified pitch and putt course for over half the tournament-no surprise to see birdies flying in. If you were lucky to avoid bunkers and your swing was in sync -a low score was on.

Surely you meant as a rival to Jordan Speith? . There was no hype at all until he led after the 3rd round,it did have the potential to be some story but think most knew he wasn't going to win still the media have to fill gaps. Your scenario would be a massive dose of press aftertiming if they kept quiet til after the final round was played when he realistically score wise had a chance of being "Champion golfer of the year"

Vubiant, I don't think Dunne is a slow player in the making. I think he's a fully fledged slow player. I felt a bit sorry for Oosthuizen having to wait at each hole with him trying to win the Open.

The last group, Dunne and Oosthuizen, had teed off on 18 when the second last group were on the 18th green. There was no gap in the order of play so they cant have been too slow

Agree with vubiants sentiments .  The hype machine is always looking for a story , bedevils all forms of sport reporting these days . If I had anything to do with an equivalent situation I would lock the player concerned away in a bedroom with only a play station or the like , no access to media hype .  Zach Johnson chased the media people when it was probable that he was in a play -off , they were commenting adversely about it . Proved it was the right thing to do , preserve your concentration and stay in playing mode , celebrate afterwards . You dont get many chances to win a major .

Paul Dunne was leading the Open with 54 holes played , and the fact that he was an amateur only heightened the interest . What do these clowns expect the press to do, ignore him ?, to give him a supposed better chance.
What they should do is take a picture of the concrete block of Shiite he left in his pants .
The next time anybody will see Dunne, he will be the club pro in ballaghdareen.

It wasn't hype. It was just a lot of people asking the fundamental questions "who is Paul Dunne" and "how on earth is an amateur leading the Open going into the last day"?

What he achieved over the first three rounds was simply astonishing for an amateur. Whatever the future holds for him, he will always fondly look back on his week at St Andrews. I don't think he's going to have to look too hard for sponsorship when he does turn professional.

Judging by their performances, there is obviously a group of seriously talented young amateurs about to explode onto the professional circuit.

having followed paul around on the 2nd and 3rd day i have no doubt he will go to the top. The writing was on the wall before the last round he was very nervous on the practice green when his chance comes around again,he will be ready
