Not an easy game-I'll grant you that.

I lumped on one in the first at Brighton as a back-to-lay @ 4.5. Horse delays in the stalls and gives away 10L. Game over! Never did anything like that before and beaten only 3 L. Shagged up the whole day.

Then a horse off track for 3 1/2 years dots up at Hamilton.
Luckily I have great discipline -I don't lay at over 100 !

I may be wrong, and/or the rules may have changed......but I seem to remember from bookie shops years ago, that plenty paid out on the second horse if a reserve won?? Anyone confirm or deny that?

Not taking a % of the book so.....cant really be counted so. It should really apply across the board. Tough totake when back a yoke e.w, he finishes second to a reserve. You don't collect on the win market, and there is a Rule 4 applied to place part from the NR who let the reserve in!!

The Irish races with reserves are a bollox for betting purposes . I can see the logic in having reserves available , but when they enter the betting arena it complicates matters for those taking ( or laying) early prices .

Generally I avoid these races like the plague .

Backed one in the race as it happens , each way , 1/4 odds 4 places . Horse withdrawn at start leaving 15 , mine finishes 4th after looking all over the winner turning in .  Frustrating .

Powers most certainly DO NOT pay out on horses who finish second to reserves, but they do enhance horses who are 11/10 on the show to 6/5 when they are 2.4 to back on the exchanges.
Ladbrokes are the only company on the high street in Ireland who do not count reserves as runners in the morning, but obviously when they officially get in that changes.

Not trying to be smart here Toby, but go back and think and id say you will find im correct. Maybe we are at crossed purposes here but what im saying is that if you back a horse in Powers and the reserve comes in and beats you then you do not get paid, but if the same thing happens in Ladbrokes then you do get paid. These bets are all prior to the reserve officially being declared a runner.

I'm with you mincer , it's a few years ago and from info received on a thread on here, I challenged pp (Wicklow town) on a second on the above criteria. After many discussions over numerous days I was paid. Its probable it was paid as a goodwill gesture and not the norm ( not a huge sum involved).

My most galling experience was about 10 years ago in Killarney. Got wind of a planned coup on a locally trained horse and had a nice bet each way bet at 10s and 11s (€75 win and €75 ew)
The horse was punted all day and returned 7/2.
A 10/1 shot was withdrawn and the first reserve went off at 5/2 favourite and won the race with my bet finishing second.
That was bad enough but to get hit with a 10c R4 deduction for the withdrawal of a 10/1 shot despite the reserve going off favourite, was the bitterest pill.
