croke park looks empty yet will probably fill up for the football. What class of a supporter do Dublin have that wouldn't be bothered to watch a spectacle like hurling against a good team like Galway but will come in their droves to watch the footballers maul Longford.

Watched most of the second half of the hurling . Whilst it was not at the skill level of some other counties , it was nip and tuck for the last 20 minutes and a draw was a fair result ( and the GAA people counting the money dont mind draws ). Compare that with watching a 4-nil soccer match , which is better viewing ?
Didn't watch any of the football match , mis match I suspect , matches like that do nothing for the sport , but they are unavoidable I suppose given the current system . Increasingly there are 2 tiers in football and hurling , changing it might be a step too far for a lot of traditionalists though . |

seen a good point made on another forum, if the GAA were going to have a mismatch like that in HQ why not have it on before the hurling, which was always going to be a tight one??

Was going to the Curragh one Sunday,it was one of those rare occasions Dublin were playing away,there was a traffic jam southbound.
It was caused by Dub supporters,I never seen such cars,dilapidated yokes,a red car with one yellow door,hybrid type vans,cars from bygone eras. You still got to hand it to them they come out in there droves. |

The Dubs came up to play us in Newcastle in a Division One National League match late eighties when Jackie McManus was in the process of building the team that won 2 All-Irelands in 91 and 94 .
Match was low key , we won easily , the Dubs were very ordinary despite having a few good players . I finished up among the Dub supporters , the craic was great and I always talk to opposition team supporters ( except Tyrone ones ) provided they are friendly ( which they invariably are ) . There were about 80 Dub supporters , two buses worth essentially . They told me they could name everyone on the two buses . The Dub support waxes and wanes with success , if yesterdays score was reversed there would be few Dub supporters . Great to see the Dubs doing well , important for the GAA and the game in general . And historically they have given a huge amount to the game , but sporadically once upon a time . Teams come and go , ours has been gone for 15 years plus , maybe this year there will be green shoots , hope springs eternal . I dont mind older cars etc , paricularly on match days , we dont want all supporters arriving in their four by fours . |

Reference earlier posts re one sided nature of some early games , is it not time to rethink the All-Ireland series . The population of Leitrim is about 35,000 . There are more people living in any part of Dublin you care to name . We started out as a fledgling club in the early seventies with about 80 members ( including juveniles ) . In an area where when I was playing there were 3 of us playing Gaelic football ( in another county) , and nobody hurling or camogie .
20 years later we had 3 central figures on an All-Ireland winning team , plus a sub who played in earlier rounds . The only reason we achieved that was because our county board allowed amalgamations at juvenile level , otherwise we could not have fielded a team --and occasionally we had to field a girl or two to make up numbers . Talent has to be nurtured and worked with . Kerry allow amalgamations for their championships , could there be a more successful model ? If some of the weaker counties were allowed to amalgamate for the Championship would it not make for a better sporting model ? The rugby people twigged on a while ago that Ireland with 25 plus "club teams" were going nowhere , particularly in the burgeoning professional game . 4 teams enough , good call , and it has brought unthought of support and interest throughout the island . Maybe time for a rethink , it worked well also for the Ryder Cup after a bit of vision and contact from Jack . |

GAA is still a very conservative organisation at HQ level and local level..The same counties that have always dominated at provincial level have a lot of power in the organisation and have no real interest in change
so the ordinary fan loses out. |

A County is a county,the old rivalries are great,amalgamation would be disastrous.
Offaly have shone in both codes in the doldrums now but how could you amalgamate them,would you decouple them if they started to come good again Its not as if crowds aren't going to the GAA they are |

The GAA have a very loyal set of followers , wildman . So has rugby . Thats not to say they couldn't have more .
Football in the smaller counties is dying I suspect , dont know the figures , but who wants to play county football where you are being destroyed by one of the bigger counties who have essentially near pros playing for them . Kieran Donaghy has quit his job to play this year , would anyone in Leitrim or Longford be able to do that ( or want to ) . Hurling in Antrim is dead , despite heroic efforts over the years to develope players and spice up coaching . No one craves wearing the saffron . Down and Antrim even amalgamated their leagues to try and foster development . Allow a six county team , bringing in Derry -he , and you might get a team capable of playing well against Kilkenny or Tipp or Clare or Cork or . The clubs can play away , without their county players I would favour , younger players will still be able to develope hopefully . In the modern age , old boundaries and attitudes change , travel and exposure to different cultures changes everyone . The GAA is no different even if I see more four by fours bringing kids to under age activity these days . A friend was telling me yesterday how his club has changed . The chairman is from a political party with an agenda , never kicked a ball or pucked a sliothar in his life according to my informant who drove around his area picking up kids for matches for years. Hope the coaches know something about the game(s) . |
