Its an old maxim but a good one.
If the handicapper sees some trainer at it in a maiden hurdle he should refuse to give him a mark,telling him he will get a mark when he tries.
Years ago when some Russian horses entered the Grand National they were automatically given top weight.
This maxim can also apply to referenda.
If you have a scintilla of doubt vote No.

He can and and does do this, all be it very rarely.
No horse should get a mark unless its placed in a maiden (hurdle/chase), it would make these races more competitive and if you're not good enough to be placed in one of these, you're not good enough for the track full stop. |

there wud be very few 16 runner handicaps if that was brought in!

You'd have to swap a lot of the 0-95 handicaps for maidens, but imo they'd be no loss if you were gaining 16+ runners maiden hurdles with all trying as opposed to now where you have 20 runner fields with 3 trying

its the way of the world, economics, trainer gets the year or more training fees as the owner or owners are fed positive vibes..they will be a day for him etc..then the sh1t hits the fan in most cases when they discover the horse is useless..and will never win a race

I doubt this is a horse racing thread and the debate that is being proposed is the events of next Thursday.
I would assume that most people vote no when they have any doubts about what is proposed. |

Combine the inexperience of the horses with the nature of some of our tracks and I'd say you'd see a lot of fatalities in maiden hurdles if everyone was at it, especially in the summer. Apart from that, it ain't a bad idea. It would be the first step away from handicaps toward the claiming system in America in a way.
