I rent student accommodation and have for twenty years,but the last two years have been a nightmare, a lot of the students are scumbags,and should be housed in a zoo.
They do not care one jot about the deposits,and are only intent on wrecking the accommodation.The guards are an absolute joke as well.
The mammys and daddys make you laugh our johnny etc etc.
I post this for any newbies who might be looking to rent to students for the first time,I suggest buy a zoo.

Poor parenting leading to individuals who in too many cases lack any semblance of discipline or social responsibility... because nobody demanded it of them.
Having been pampered and indulged from the cradle they think the world exists merely to serve their every whim or pleasure. Yes ,many of them will eventually (be forced to ) grow out of it and become upstanding citizens but the point is they should have grown out of this immature state of social dishevelment long before now. At home and abroad many Irish 'students' are an embarrassing disgrace as well documented on many continents. |

Had this trouble before as a Landlord. Really wanted to kick the living sh1t out of them. Took pictures of the damage to the house, including the discarded porn collection and sent copies to both their parents and their new employers.
A friend has a beautiful secluded lodge near Killarney, top spec, just a fabulous place...he now refuses to take any Irish guests. Too many of them wreck the place, he just doesn't take a chance with them any more and relies upon Overseas Guests. |

How did you get on ozy did they compensate you,my feelings are the same as yours initially I wanted to do the same to them. I am well out of pocket,but I have reported the incidents to the gardai so it is on file.
I was thinking of writing to the parents as well. |

Ozymandius does reveal a lot about himself and its not pretty. His first reaction is a desire to inflict violence but his nervousness and cowardice kicks in. His second reaction is to sneakily try to get them in trouble with their employers. Its hard to be sympathetic with landlords,they get huge rent always come up with an excuse for keeping the deposit. How do you expect a group of students to behave,they are untidy,ye surely knew that when ye rented it out,more than likely for some inflated rent. |

No harm in letting their Managing Partner at Stokes Kennedy whatchamacallit, or wherever it was they had just joined, know exactly what sort of uncouth barbarian they had just hired. As I recall, I also copied their Dean of Studies on the memo to congratulate him on what fine young men he was turning out. Just had to grin and bear it and have a lash back at them on the only way I could think of at the time. They were Pigs, my mistake for letting them in in the first place. Never again. You repeat yourself ad nauseum on a daily basis, you need to come up with a few new lines to freshen up the act.
My friends business decision came as a result of his experiences over a large sample size. He simply had enough. German guests would leave the place better than they found it, he found a significant % of Irish families would wreck the place. He felt he had no option. Up to you whether you approve of or condone his decision, I have indicated neither, am merely relaying the story. Thankfully my properties were out of the price range of students except that one time when I went out of my way to do a deal with them So thankfully, I never had to discriminate against them going forward, they were simply unable to afford the rent. |

Many "landlords" would rank right up there for me in terms of people I least admire.
The use of the word "scumbag" may be very popular today but it's reprehensible term. Having a number of said students in my household I can vouch for rents that are outrageous, a lot of cash-in-hand insisted upon, overcrowding, little done in terms of repairs and maintenance and a general acceptance by the landlords that modest standards of accommodation are not required such is the overheated demand. God help the needy when it comes to rental accommodation....... |

A friend of my Father works in security on the University Campus in Limerick, the official University Campus accomodation, 3k per term so pretty well-heeled for Limerick! He said that 99% of it is down to drink and people not holding it well. It is a regular sight out there to see windows smashed and TVs/Couches thrown off Balconies. It's all done while people are drunk. Some have been thrown out of accommodation for the more serious damage.
Apparently any verbal abuse he has suffered, he said about 80% of them come back and apologise the next time they see him. I think much of the reason why Irish people don't clean rented holiday accomodation is that they spend the week on a bender and wake up hungover the morning they're leaving with the place a sty, there simply isn't the time to clear up. |

Not really. It's the in-group licence.
Blacks can use n/n/g/g/e/r and homosexuals can use '****' with general impunity. Outsiders using these terms ,unless in a controlled context, risk being excoriated. So-Irish people can severely criticise aspects of Irish life -but if outsiders do so-many choose to circle the wagons and bristle with defensive indignation. Can see the disappointment with people disrespecting your property but scumbag is a little strong accolade. Met scumbags galore myself today,1st one was what looked like a 9 year old Roma child giving me a written note that her family was in a dire predicament with the hunger. No 2 came in the form of a fellow offering his services for E40 to remove all the grass and debris that was alledgedly playing havoc with the gutters. I declined on behalf of my elderly mother,a later inspection of the god love us guttering was the most pristine i came across. Two prize scumbags. |

I had a theory in Uni if a girl invited you back to hers for some and you went back and the place was dirty then leg it no matter how attractive she was. If she could not keep her room tidy then the chances were downstairs was not clean either.

An occupational hazard anyway,people cannot afford houses and hard to feel too sorry for a person that has x number,goverment should intervene and provide at least small houses for people that can't afford them instead of the shambles that is in place at the moment.

The Yacht must have been berthed in Carlingford Lough . Now this ,what ever next ,maybe she was a consultant with NASA . Pity is a word cropping up everytime I read one of her post.

Norma , you're slipping , you fail to see the irony of Carlingford Lough ,Yachts are usually berth in exotic places ,places you have to FLY to get too . You managed to get to your friends and back within 3 days ffs . Pity is the word ,give it up ffs you are becoming boring .If someone put up a thread saying they had climbed MT Everest , you be on saying you had as well and both you and your FRIEND ? had roast chesnuts in camp before acending the summit.
