Open de España 2015

The Greg Norman designed Real Club de Golf El Prat, half an hour from Barcelona, plays host to the Open de España for the tenth time.
The ‘Open’ course of 7,298yds is a standard par 72. http://www.realclubdegolfelprat.com/en/presentation

The last time the tournament was played at Real Golf Club El Prat in 2011 it was a South African, Thomas Aiken, who claimed the title beating Dane Anders Hansen by two, and he returns to the venue buoyed by a fourth place finish in last week in Mauritius.
http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2011/tournamentid=2011027/leaderboard/index.html?showLeaderboard=Y

Aiken’s victory four years ago was his maiden win on The European Tour and he dedicated it to the memory of legendary Spaniard Ballesteros, who lost his long battle with cancer aged 54 on that weekend of the tournament. The five-time Major Champion and three-time winner of his national title, Seve last lifted the trophy in 1995 - one that made him the only player in European Tour history to record 50 victories.

Thomas having since added two more European Tour titles to his CV – the 2012 Avantha Masters and 2013 Africa Open – the 31 year old from Johannesburg is relishing the chance to return to the venue of his breakthrough win. “It was my first European Tour win and it was an extremely emotional week with the passing of Seve Ballesteros and it being in Spain,” said Aiken.

All the players wore black ribbons in memory of the Spanish superstar. Severiano Ballesteros Sota, of Spain, died on May 7th. http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/news/newsid=136361.html
“He was an amazing ambassador for the game, not just in Spain but in the whole of Europe and the whole world. It brought a tear to everyone’s eye that week, so there are a lot of good and a lot of bad memories for me going back to El Prat.
“It’s always nice to go back to a course you won on though, and you can reflect on those memories. I’m looking forward to it, having had a good performance last week, and with some big weeks coming up.”

The Open de España marks the first of five consecutive events on European soil, with next week’s BMW PGA Championship in England followed by visits to the Mourne GC/RCD for the Irish Open, then Sweden and Austria.

Backed ew 5 places - Aiken & Pablo Larrazabal 28’s plus A.Hansen & Horsey 80’s.

Thomas Aiken The 2011 winner at El Prat will return to the scene of his first win on the European Tour in good spirits after a solo fourth in the Mauritius Open last week. Thought he would be Huddys nap again this week. That was his fourth T10 of the season while he also cracked the T25 in the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Apart from his win, his other four Open de España appearances haven’t yielded anything better than T46 so he’ll be glad El Prat is playing host again.

Pablo Larrazabal home club El Prat so it's a 'home game' for the Spaniard and he’s one of the 'big big' favourites. He certainly put that local knowledge to good use here in 2011 when finishing third while he was also runner-up in the 2012 Open de España at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla. He missed the cut on his latest outing in China but was T3 in the Trophee Hassan II two starts prior to that. Good to see Huddy Houdini's money was also on during that 'TOP SCOT' Challenge so he's KEEPING THE FAITH !

Anders Hansen at 80's is your man if your looking for a straight hitter off the tee who is a solid putter. You rarely find the Dane off the fairways and he doesn’t miss many greens either. When he’s on the greens he gets the ball to the hole which helps. The 44-year-old has hit the heights during his long career on the European Tour, twice winning the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and looks to be playing well again after returning in April 2014 from a six-month absence due to wrist surgery.
The Dane finished 92nd in the Race To Dubai last year - his worst finish since 1999 - although that wrist injury at the start of the year restricted him to just 15 starts. He's 4-for-4 so far in 2015 and had a solid if unspectacular Desert Swing on courses probably a shade long for him finishing T26 in Abu Dhabi, T19 in Qatar and T32 in Dubai as he could boast course form at the Emirates having finished runner-up in 2011.
Former University of Houston grad Hansen posted a 6-under-par 34-32=66 on day one of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic to sit inside the top 10 and is also my bet for FRL this week at 80's. He provided further evidence of his return to form with a 4-under-par 34-34=68 in the first round of the Malaysian Open. His fast start won't come as a surprise to those who have kept a close eye on the Dane.

David Horsey the three-time European Tour winner started Sunday at the Tshwane Openas one of the six leaders but closed with a disappointing 3-over-par 36-37=73 to finish in a tie for 10th. A consolation birdie at 17 just managed to squeeze him into the top 10 on 6-under 274 but, after sharing the lead after 18 and 54 holes, Horsey left Pretoria CC with a sense of disappointment. The 30yo is a course specialist at Golf du Palais Royal with a win in 2011, a second place in 2013 and two other top 15s and T17 this year.  Finished T39 & T42 afterwards in China, David does have some 'horrific Sundays' but the 80's 5places negate that flaw. No six places available anywhere this week !

This is Francesco Molinari’s debut at El Prat but he lifted the trophy in 2012. A wrist injury appears to have cleared up although his only start in the last month was at the Match Play where a first-round exit didn’t reveal too much while beating Adam Scott 5/4 but bowing to Kirk 2/1 & Casey one down. The obvious positive is that he loves playing in Spain and in six other starts there he has three other top 10s and a T24. He also has the dream draw with Aiken & Sergio at 13.20 to prove himself. A tough ask / task.

It’s also a 'home game' for Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello who had a T11 on this course in 2011 when he closed with a 67 so that may give some encouragement. The Spaniard bettered than finish just twice in his National Open courtesy of a T4 in 2002 and a T6 in 2009. Rafa finished 4th in greens in regulation in his last two events but can’t quite string everything together at the moment, his last four finishes on the European Tour ranging from T31 to T47. Hangs with Matteo and Howell for two days so let’s hope the home cooked Paella helps him but I fear the late night ‘tapas bars’ may prove detrimental.

Peter Uihlein had a profitable fortnight in China (T4 and T8) but he’ll need to find more fairways than the 50% he managed in both the Shenzhen International and Volvo China Open while still trying to bed in those swing changes. Uihlein should be fighting fit for this and ready to put in a big title bid and while it’ll be his first look at El Prat he did contest the last two Open de Espanas. His first was at Parador de El Salar where he was the halfway leader and eventually finished T8, just two shots behind the playoff number. Don’t think he’ll keep up with Ramsey and certainly not Colsaerts for two days.

I would be very much in the same frame of mind Apple.

Not since Dubai have I thought Rory McIlroy was such a good bet, but I really cant see beyond himself and one or two others this week.

True, he is priced up accordingly, but this is a poor field, on a track he is far more comfortable on than Sawgrass. And he was barely out of the frame there. Missing greens is ging to be commonplace this week, and with that in mind Rorys bunker play and chipping of the last two weeks is a huge bonus. Yes the putter was cold last week, but he is the best player in the world for a reason, and that flat stick wont keep misbehaving.

Quail Hollow is much more of a bombers paradise than Sawgrass and add in the forecast rain, and it looks set up for McIlroy to notch another win.

While thinking that Rory is certainly the one to beat, and value at 4.8, I do believe that 25-1 e.w on Phil Mickelson is the bet of the week.

All that is missing from Phils QH CV is a W. A 75 and a 76 in one week would usually mean a down the field return, but Phil still finished on the fringes of things last year. He seems in better form this time around, and after a run out last week he looks sure to be involved. I would make a strong and clear second fav. He seems to need that run out these days, and maybe it would have been better to come here with 4 rounds under his belt, but that is the only negative I can think of. He was very near his brilliant best at Augusta, and there is no reason to think he wont be at that level here too.

The benefit of missing the cut last week, is the price we get this week. If he came here off his Masters performance, he would be 14s. Tops. What Phil does one week has no bearing, or very little anyway, on what he does the next. What he has done at Quail Hollow over the past 11 years has huge bearing.

25s is massive.

Patrick Reed also looked worth backing at 40s. There are plenty under him in the market who I wouldnt give as much chance of winning. He has two outings under his belt around here now, and looked in reasonable form in the last two weeks. And unlike some, he seems to revel on the pressure of being in contention. In a field lacking in quality outside of the obvious, he looks the most likely winner outside of them two.

Padraig Harrington was hit and miss last week, but he is showing enough to suggest he may find himself consistently contending again. A cracking 67 on Sunday will send him here in good spirits. And he has a couple of top tens here, in years when his game was in far far worse shape than it is in now. At 150-1, he is worth risking.

8pts Rory McIlroy 4.8
2pts e.w Phil Mickleson 25-1
.8pt e.w Patrick Reed 40-1
.3pt e.w Padraig Harrington 150-1

Again in Spain, I have stuck with what is jumping off the page.

Sergio Garcia should have won last week, but got a bit jittery from the 9th hole onwards. If he plays aswell here, he can get jittery on Saturday, and let me play on Sunday, and he will still probably win!!

There is a huge gulf in class from there to here, and Europe has a tendency at this time of the year to produce 'expected' results. Last week being a good example. Serg will relish the support form the crowd in his home Open after being heckled by ass holes stateside on Sunday.

I am chomping at the bit to back Matteo Manassero for next weeks BMW, so very much feel the need to be on this week, just in case he wins and blows the price!! He still has to prove he is heading back to his best, but I feel he is, and if so he is one of the only players in this field capable of holding a candle to an in form Garcia. 80-1 seemed far too big, and so it has proved.

4.5pts e.w Sergio Garcia 11-2
.4pt e.w Matteo Manassero 80-1

Total Staked.......658.1pts
Total Returns......602.35pts
Running Total.....-55.75pts

Bob Harig, ESPN.com senior golf writer callsitashecsittoo...
"Phil Mickelson: It's tough to have much confidence in Lefty at the moment, but he likes Quail Hollow and has played well there, even when he hasn't had his game. Mickelson is coming off a missed cut at the Players Championship, where he was 5 over par. He was right there in position on Friday and then let it get away. It appears that he gets motivated only for the majors, as second-place finishes in the last two would suggest.
But Mickelson does want to show some good form with another major looming. He could use the confidence from a couple of good tournaments. Quail Hollow seems a good place to start: He's never missed the cut in 11 tries and has five top-5s".

Phil didn’t inspire confidence as he withdrew from the Match Play for personal reasons and neither did his MC last week at THE PLAYERS although it may have been expected as he hadn't finished inside the T25 in any of his last four trip to Sawgrass. To solve the Mickelson puzzle one should back him on courses where he’s had plenty of success and this week certainly qualifies. He’s never missed the weekend and he’s played every event here besides the inaugural. He’s posted T10's seven times and he only has two finishes outside of the T12. He shot 63 in the third round here last year when he wasn’t exactly lighting up the TOUR at that point either so he’s a creature of comfort. It’s actually surprising Callit that he hasn’t won here. #inthesameboat - sink or swim Devil

In the USA we have THE GREEN MILE...

Quail Hollow’s “Green Mile” is the very difficult stretch of finishing holes (Nos. 16 through 18) that will test the nerve of the game’s best players.
Phil Mickelson bogeyed his final two in 2013 and missed out on a playoff; Justin Rose played this stretch five-over last year to finish fifth.
J.B. Holmes played these holes even and won.

No. 16 plays slightly over 500 yards and has water left of the green if the distance wasn’t enough of a challenge.
No. 17 is 221 yards and is surrounded by water on three sides.
The finishing hole is almost 500 yards, uphill with trees up the right and a creek down the middle just to test the nerves.

2014: J.B. Holmes 274
2013: Derek Ernst 280 in playoff*
2012: Rickie Fowler 274 in playoff*
2011: Lucas Glover 273
2010: Rory McIlroy 273
2009: Sean O'Hair 277
2008: Anthony Kim 272

Rory McIlroy 100/30
Has an excellent record at this course and in great form this year being in contention every week.

Daniel Berger 80/1
Driving distance, Gir and scrambling the key stats around here and that should suit Berger down to the ground. In excellent form in rookie season on tour.

Adam Scott missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship by one stroke at 1-over-par 71-74=145.
Before blaming Scott's putting for Friday's disappointment, note he split only seven (of 28) fairways and only 22 GIR at Quail Hollow. That would put a lot of pressure on any golfer, much less one of the worst statistically with any flat stick on the PGA TOUR. He'll need to tighten all the screws to defend his title at this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Other notables that missed the cut in Charlotte include: 2013 champ Derek Ernst (even with a bogey-free 69 in R2), Jason Kokrak, Louis Oosthuizen, Padraig Harrington & 2006 champ Jim Furyk
