This week's Players Championship was shaping up to be Tiger's first start in a long time without much pre-tourney drama. So much for that...

Zach Johnson could easily have been challenging for the lead himself. Had a shocker with the putter. Must be frustrating that what has been the strongest aspect of his game for so long is now what is preventing him form contending most weeks.

Report Catch Me ifyoucan May 8, 2015 4:49 PM BST
Jason Day's game comes and goes too much for his talent level but backing a premium player who has some course form at Sawgrass. He was T6 in 2011 followed by MC then T19 in 2013. He followed up a disappointing Masters with T4 at Zurich but went 0-3 at Match Play last week. DAY hits it a mile and gets up-and-down from anywhere. He leads the TOUR in birdie average and the all-around and is eighth in GIR.

Russell Henley was eight-under (65-71) after two rounds last year and was in the hunt before 80 on Saturday killed any chances of contention. Instead of mailing it in he rebounded with 66 on Sunday to finish T17.

Jimmy Walker's last three years go T35 then T15 and T6 last year. While he loves this track and doesn’t hit too many fairways, he finds plenty of greens though and his short game is ace. His closing 65 last year included two bogeys. He’s posted 14 of 18 career rounds at par or better and six of those have been in the 60s.

Zach Johnson racked up 9of10 weekends including his last six and found form last week in San Fran. MC at Harbour Town but fixed something because he rebounded to win two of three matches last week at Harding Park. With so many premium players struggling to figure this track out, Johnson has a nice risk-reward element this week.

Branden Grace confirmed his reputation as one of the European Tour's best closers by carding a 6-under-par 35-31=66 to win the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. Yes, a 31 back nine to claim his second title of the 2015 season and exemption into the limited field at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Trump National for the fourth consecutive time by virtue of a top 10 in the Race to Dubai standings.
GRACE is now ranked 40th in the OWGR, the third highest South African behind Louis #24 and Charl #39, and currently lies 5th in the RTD standings.
A winner in three of his last eight worldwide starts - twice on the European Tour and recently on the Sunshine Tour - he is looking to transfer that success to the PGA TOUR. His title at the Dimension Data Pro-Am in his native South Africa contributes only to his earnings on the Sunshine Tour, but it's more proof that he's a flat-out winner. Grace followed a solo 54th at Doral with a T62 at Bay Hill and made his second career start at Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio playing on a foreign exemption to finish in 30th position. Shooting 75, 73 was a second MC at The Masters after a T18 in his first try in 2013.

Added Louis Oosthuizen (OWGR #24 from No.30 last week) to those Mauritius Open doubles. He said last weekend he was healthy and feeling great and the results have backed that sentiment. He’s racked up four top 10s in seven events since early March and has only found four rounds over par during that stretch. He backed up his T19 at Augusta with T7 at RBC Heritage and was a beaten quarter-finalist last week at Harding Park beating scrappers Keegan & The Mechanic then Bubba & Fowler before going down to Smiley Jim. He’s eighth in SGTTG and ninth in SGT. He hits PLENTY of GIR and that’s a key this week. Was on my radar before 17/18 yesterday, losing 3 shots to the field - a big ask now.

George Coetzee did pretty well in last week’s WGC-Cadillac Match Play, beating Martin Kaymer and Thongchai Jaidee after extra holes but an opening defeat to eventual semi-finalist Jim Furyk (3-0 in the group phase) proved decisive. Before that, his strokeplay form was excellent with a win in the Tshwane Open and third places in the Investec Cup and Trophee Hassan II in Morocco. He’s one of the European Tour’s best putters and will have an obvious winning chance this week. WINWINWIN !

Scott Hend like a lot of Aussies, what you see is what you get and big-hitting Hend is often easy to predict. On long, wide tracks he tends to thrive while on shorter, tighter tracks he finds it a bit of a struggle. His last two starts show a T60 in the Volvo China Open and a T15 in the Shenzhen International. Going well do far.

Morgan Hoffman - after his maiden voyage here last year saw him post all four rounds under par to finish T17. Morgan (Yes the other Hoffman) in the top 10 this week for current form players. The 36-hole leader at Arnie's finishing solo fourth and then was T28 on his Augusta debut so current form would have been an angle here he adds T9 to a very steady three tournament run. His run of form stretches back to Riviera where he was T22 and T17 at Doral. He had two top 10s in 2014 in 32 events. He has two this year in 12.
Kuchar
Ben Crane has played here the last seven years and has made five cuts. The interesting part of this stat is that four of these are T8 or BETTER.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan May 9, 2015 12:38 AM BST
David Hearn 28/1 and current T3 is coming off a week in New Orleans where he finished T6 and was a whopping 14-under on the par FOURS. Read that again. He’s played the last three at Sawgrass T68, T26 and T6 last year so he's trending in the right direction.

PART I.

George Coetzee overcame Thorbjørn Olesen at the second extra hole to continue his sensational form with victory in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.
The South African, who lived up to his billing as the highest-ranked player in the field, birdied the 18th hole at Heritage Golf Club three times in succession – once in regulation and then twice in the play-off after the pair finished tied on 13 under par.

The last of those was enough for victory as Olesen, who had earlier overcome a four-shot deficit on the front nine with a round of 68, could only manage a par after missing the fairway and being forced to lay up.

Report Catch Me ifyoucan May 10, 2015 8:33 PM BST
Justin Thomas entered the week on the back of T11 at Harbour Town and T12 at Zurich which are both Dye courses and spun a 7-under-par 32-33=65 in the third round yesterday.
There are 19 players who have previously recorded nine birdies in a single round at THE PLAYERS, including Jhonattan Vegas yesterday.
Making his PLAYERS' debut, Justin blitzed TPC Sawgrass and set the new record by converting on 10 birdies of 13 opportunities, including four straight to begin his round. His 13'8" birdie putt on the par-4 first was his LONGEST par breaker on the round, dropping each of the other nine from inside of 10 feet. The 22-year-old rookie gained entry into this week's PLAYERS as an alternate and has already added his name to the record books.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan May 10, 2015 8:44 PM BST
Chris Kirk is falling through the cracks today as he hasn’t given us any reason to pay attention in 2015 - besides a T8 at Valero. That’s not an easy course to navigate and neither is Sawgrass. Last year Kirk figured it out on the weekend with 70-67 to finish T13 for his best finish in four tries.
Report Catch Me ifyoucan May 10, 2015 8:59 PM BST
Kevin Kisner tacked on a 5-under-par 31-36=67 in the third round of THE PLAYERS to post 9-under. It was a tale of two nines for the 31-year-old, circling five birdies in a bogey-free outward half. He then relied on some adept short-game skills to navigate his way to an even-par back nine, scrambling for pars on Nos. 13, 14 and 16. Kisner, part of the 2005 University of Georgia National Championship team, is in a prime position to redeem a playoff loss three weeks ago at the RBC Heritage but may also be falling through the cracks today after bogeys at 4&5.

Kevin spun a bogey-free 7-under-par 32-32=64 in the final round of the RBC Heritage and then lost on the second playoff hole to Jim Furyk.
The 31-year-old came oh-so-close to becoming the first South Carolinian to win the tournament in its 47-year history. Kisner came to the 18th hole needing birdie to force a playoff and he delivered, calmly sinking a 6'8" putt to go to extra time. He buried a mid-range birdie on the same green on the first hole of the playoff, but his try for birdie on the par-3 17th never threatened, thus opening the door for Furyk to take the title. His consolation was a career-best finish on the PGA TOUR.

Since moving to May in 2007 Sergio Garcia has finished second, WON, T12 and was T8 and third the last two years. To say TPC Sawgrass fits his game and eye is a major understatement. He found some joy at Augusta after a quiet run up to the Masters but it didn’t carry to San Fran in the Match Play. This will be Sergio's sixteenth start at Sawgrass so there won’t be many angles or shots he hasn’t seen. He has the experience to win this again. THIS IS NOT OVER !
