One of the best fields in golf will feature the top two players in the world side by side for at least two days at TPC Sawgrass.
Here are four groups to keep an eye on Thursday at The Players Championship - Orish times: 13:39 a.m.: Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day A McIlroy-Spieth showdown at the WGC-Match Play never came to pass, but the top two players in the world will take their budding rivalry to the Stadium Course. The winners of the last three major championships will be joined by world No. 7 Jason Day, who struggled to an 0-3 ouster last week in San Francisco. While Spieth also failed to make it out of the group stage, he did play his three matches a combined 15 under, turning in better golf than McIlroy, who ended up winning. Spieth will likely welcome a return to stroke play. 18:17 p.m.: Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Zach Johnson Rose, the winner two weeks ago at the Zurich, is in search of another piece of hardware to further fill his trophy room, while Dustin Johnson looks to continue a run of high-quality play that culminated with a WGC victory at Doral. Those two are joined by Zach Johnson, who finished runner-up to Matt Kuchar in 2012. 18:38 p.m.: Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and K.J. Choi This trio of past champions has had very mixed success of late. Mickelson seems now to peak only for the biggest events - the PGA Championship and the Masters, most recently - and has missed the cut the last two years in a row. Garcia hasn't won on American soil since 2010, although he did work himself into the mix at Sawgrass back in 2013, before running into Tiger Woods on the weekend and melting down. Choi's three results since his 2011 victory are as follows: MC, T-48, T-13. 18:49 p.m.: Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Martin Kaymer The last two defending champions, Woods and Kaymer, will tee it up with 2004 champ. Woods missed The Players last year because of injury, so he'll theoretically be mounting a simultaneous title defence with Kaymer. The Woods-Scott dynamic also shifts now that Steve Williams has entered into retirement. Woods will be making his first start since the Masters and just his second in his return from a self-imposed hiatus to resurrect his game. A few poor weeks on the golf punting front, will hopefully come to an end at what is one of the most exciting venues of the year.
A truly world class field will once again assemble, and it could be the week that another of the younger generation really announces himself in one of the biggest arenas in golf. Hideki Matsuyama strikes me as a cracking wager this week. 5th at Augusta, and beaten only by a rampant Rory in the last 16 of the Matchplay, he certainly arrives in fine form. 4 solid rounds here last year will have given him crucial course knowledge, and with him becoming ever more accurate off the tee, the 40-1 just seems to big on this budding superstar. 2-1 for top 20 is also an excellent bet IMO. Rory had to endure 7 rounds last week, and will be a fair feat even for one of his talents if he can back it up with another victory this week. Jordan Spieth seemed to be relying just a little too much on his mercurial flat stick last week, and if his long game hasn't improved by Thursday, he will struggle. Jimmy Walker had a poor Masters, but playing with Tiger the first two days was not something that I would have expected to suit him. I find it pretty easy to forgive his early exit last week too. Of much more importance is his very impressive win prior to Augusta, and his final 54 holes here last year. He was 12 shots worse than Martin Kaymer after Day One then, yet finished better than anyone over the final 3 day, to claim a share of 6th, only 4 shots off the brilliant German. 35-1 seems to underestimate this now regular winner. 7-4 for a top 20 also seems a bit big. Speaking of the brilliant German, it seems odd we can get 100-1 on here on Martin Kaymer this year, when he went off only 90s last year. Not only is he now defending champion, but also a current major holder having routed the field in the US Open. Currently out of form, he has on more than occasion proved that class is permanent, and he warrants a bet at the inflated prices. Zach Johnson let me down a couple of weeks back with an uncharacteristically poor performance, but he again shaped like he is ready to win last week. 66-1 was very big, and though since cut by the books, he is still about the same price on here. At no disadvantage length wise off the tee, his accuracy will be a fine weapon, and if his putter does what it can do, he will fancy his chances come Sunday. Henrik Stenson will always fancy his chances at Sawgrass. A brilliant winner in 2009, he could have added a second title in 2013. He was just reappearing from the doldrums though at that stage, and didn't have the match practice or weekend competitiveness to close it out then. That wont be a problem this week, and of the market leaders he is certainly the one I want to be with. Ben Crane probably wont win, but at 300-1, I wont mind if he just does what he has in 3 of the last 6 years. Pay out on the top 6. Add in his 8th place finish of last year, and its pretty clear that he excels here, even in years when he has been in otherwise poor form. I've a good feeling about this week after looking @ callit's selections, we really seem to be fishing in the same pond this week:
Henrik Stenson 22/1 Former winner of this event who also has an excellent record in Florida. In top form last few wekks and will be very keen to get his 1st win of the year Jimmy Walker 35/1 Great form this year already with 2 wins to his name. Had decent form here prior to his transformation to multiple winner Lee Westwood 50/1 Not a normally a player I back but he seems to love this course with 3 top 10's last 5 years. Form better this year than results have suggested. Zach Johnson 50/1 Another player with excellent form at this course. Coming into a good run of form last few weeks. Ryan Moore 110/1 Has the ball striking game necessary to prosper here. Great minds think alike. Stenson and Walker are the two that stand out at the top of the market.
Others that look big are Ryan Palmer @ 100/1 ....a huge leap in his price compared to earlier in the season. Brendon de Jonge @ 125/1...280 on here A safer play is de Jonge to post a Top 20 @ 5s Laddies. On the face of it @ just over 7000 yards it looks a short track that could be demolished by the big hitters or play into the hands of the shorter tactical players. Ryan Moore’s made the cut in seven out of eight, yes BUT he’s never finished better than T26 in any of them. His current form may suggest a little look but expectations should be tempered. GMac is 4 for his last 6 here with nothing better than T26. Yes 2011 still haunts him - his 54-hole lead went up in smoke with 79 on Sunday (T33). His last three have been MC-MC-T62 and with nothing better than T26 this season it's over and out. Bubba played seven events here and has found the 60s only three times. Add 3 MC and never finished better than T37. Waiting for Whistling Straits where he lost in a playoff to Kaymer in 20.10. Bill Haas - well when 49 of the top 50 players in the OWGR play the same event you surely don’t pick a guy that has missed half of his eight tries and has nothing better than T26. Rickie Fowler in five tries he’s finished second and T77. The other three are MCs - 'nough said. Keegan Bradley boiled over last week with his tête-à-tête with Jimenez, being 0-from-2 matches and one-down at the time, while taking a drop after hitting it OB on their last hole. Added Lee Westwood to be Top Englishman.
He had a pretty decent week last week, finally ousted by an inspired Danny Willet. Unlike Willet though, he didn't have to endure another 54 holes between Sat and Sunday. Paul Casey also had extra play time, and also has a bug to overcome. Luke Donald is plain out of form, and Justin Rose looks short enough.
