Revealing interview with Eritrean migrant yesterday.

He left Eritrea and claimed asylum in Ethiopia, unsuccessful.
Left Ethiopia travelled through Africa arrived in Libya
Paid 1000 to some traffickers to get him to Europe, received the money from family members already in Europe.
Rescued by American boat in Mediterranean makes it to Italy, asylum application turned down so heads for England.
Pays 400 to cross the channel to Britain,is caught sent back to Italy.
Returns to Calais pays another 400 makes it to Britain, heads to Scotland crosses to Belfast then down to Dublin.
Asylum application turned down, naturally this is just ignored.
Eventually gets his Irish citizenship.

Again naturally his first action as an Irish citizen is to return home and get married, both return where he now is in third level education living on welfare.

We may as well go back to Haughey times and sell our passports.

and immigrants have affected your comfortable lives in what negative manner?
Report wildmanfromborneo April 27, 2015 1:21 PM BST
Does my life have to be affected ?

The interviewee continually broke the law used money and traffickers to skip the queue,is now being lauded on RTE for having being first turned down in Ireland persisted and in some legal war of attrition succeeded in getting his meal ticket.

He is costing the state plenty and will no doubt encourage others of similar indolence to come.

Meanwhile young Irish people are being forced to leave in droves and the ones that remain have been sold into a form of slavery to the banks.

There are a million more like this gentlemen clamouring to get in,Aine Lawlor demands we take our fair share never wondering how we are going to fund this largesse, never questioning that once this crisis is over it will start all over again until ye have to say stop at some junction.

It would be easy for me to do Bono/ Geldof thing and be the good compassionate fellow who dreams of world peace and equality for all,I would get that feel good factor they so enjoy.
I though live in the real world and know there is no such thing as equality and if you don't protect what you have it will be taken off you.

Surely history has thought you that.

A real adventure story, reminiscent of Papillion.  Hats off to the man.  Courage determination and obvuously intelligence as he is now in third level education.  I have no doubt he will go on to be a credit to our Nation.

Unlike those who sit on forums all day and give out about foreigners...hard to find much to be proud about there.

" I have no doubt he will go on to be a credit to our nation "

Sadly I have no doubt he will go on being a drain on our nation.
Report RoyalAcademy April 27, 2015 2:04 PM BST
A few things concerning your remarks:

you have little doubt our indolent Eritrean friend, who is studying to, presumably, better himself, will be a drain on our "beloved" nation....do you think he is educating himself to fend off ennui?

I love the "indolence" term: as close to an African "label" as one could find. I presume you prefer "work-shy" for those from the East?

I lived and worked in a large suburban town and volunteered my services free-of-charge in my offices one-night-per-week for 7 years over the course of this damned recession. In my limited experience I found the visitors to our country to be ambitious, diligent, hard-working and keen to assimilate. I accept there will be others less driven.

You say that the social welfare system is there to be abused and who better to abuse it that our own natives. We created a monster in the 70's/80's that encourages the work-shy and consequently we have generations of families that simply to not understand the notion of hard work and progressing on merit.

I do rely on the Irish people in general to introduce sanity to any given situation as a result of our ancestors being humanely treated on their own peregrinations over the centuries.
Report wildmanfromborneo April 27, 2015 2:17 PM BST
Our peregrinations were to countries that wanted immigrants and had no welfare state.

Lots of the unemployed are sent on to education its a way of massaging the figures.

We have our own indolent, our own criminals but that's the point they are our own,no need to import more.
You will also find that they and their families have contributed into the system.
Report newapproach April 27, 2015 2:21 PM BST
We can't solve all the problems of the world by importing people in here. The most humane solution is to help these countries to solve their own economic/social/governmental problems. Taking in a selection of them to massage our own egos is a selfish pursuit. By and large only young men will be able to make it over here, the liberal intolerents forget about the wives and children that there people leave behind in poverty and deprevation.
Report RoyalAcademy April 27, 2015 2:54 PM BST
"liberal intolerants"...now where did I hear that before? the love of labels that the internet adores

I've said my piece and we can agree to strongly differ.

We have a housing crisis ,yet this lady wants to bring in these people ..You couldn't make it up ...This need to be seen as caring is a Irish thing , we are so insicure that we need outside approval for everything ..This need to be liked by all and sundry is the Irish disease.....

A lot roll off their arse into it too.  Far too much irrespective of the colour of the skin of the lad picking it up.
Report workrider April 28, 2015 4:15 PM BST
Ozy , maybe the Irish lad hasn't put sfa into the system , but you can bet SOME of his family has over the years , yet the Migrant or his family puts nothing in yet gets the benefits ...A scandal...
Report Ozymandius April 28, 2015 4:30 PM BST
The Irish lad would have been educated for free, doctored for free, given Childrens allowance plus a whole lot more depending on his circumstances...all in all he has probably already cost the State plenty.  He speaks English fluently, possibly other European languages also and can legally travel and work throughout the EU....plenty of jobs out there.

The foreign lad has battled his way here on a floating banana skin.

I know who I feel deserves the support more.

As long as the numbers are kept sensible. As things stand, I haven't seen any evidence that non-nationals are the biggest problem facing the Social Welfare system.

P.S Make sure you thank Vubiant for answering all your questions on Presbyerianism, the Pope and much else besides.
Report workrider April 28, 2015 4:45 PM BST
So in your opinion anyone who makes their way here deserves to be given benefits ?..Its no wonder they come here in their droves , makes me think you never paid a penny in tax ...Yet thats why we pay into the system , so our children can be educated and become useful citizens of the world ...People like myself had to go out into the world practically uneducated trying to make a living through nesscessity , having worked since the age of 14 and paid taxes all my life it makes me sick to see my heritage been handed out willy nilly to anyone who arrives on these shores ..I don't expect you to understand that , as I doubt you contributed anything in your life ....
Report Ozymandius April 28, 2015 4:57 PM BST
So in your opinion anyone who makes their way here deserves to be given benefits ?

Nope, clearly not.  The numbers have to be managed.

so our children can be educated and become useful citizens of the world

Exactly the world is their oyster, let them off.  Hopefully we can benefit from their return at a better  point in our economic cycle.  Anything but stay and sit on their arse.

You talk about my contributions...well...lets look at yours....You retired in your mid 40's allegedly, pity you didn't crack on a bit longer, you might have been able to afford private education for your kids...give them the best start possible and ensure that when they grew up they weren't threatened by the lad off the boat in the same way you are.. But shure I suppose the lure of the golf course and race course was too strong.
Report workrider April 28, 2015 5:14 PM BST
All my Children work , they have very good jobs thank God , so I have no worries about that ...The thing is , not every family is as lucky as mine ..The amount of tax they pay is huge ,they have never had to sign on as they had jobs straight from school ...So I'm not worried some foreign person will come along and steal their jobs ...Sadly lots of families don't have the luxury of full employment and are rightly worried about their childrens future ...

workrider, I am only putting the view from the people on these boats risking their lives to get to europe.

You have a family so say things were dire here in Ireland and the only place you and your family would be safe was America, would you not risk everything to get there, you also would not care what the native Americans of you, the only think on your mind would be how to get all your family there safe.

If it was not worth their while coming they would go some to some other country, my mate told me back in 2005/06 they used to come into the social welfare office saying in a broken english accent "Can I have the form for the free House" they meant Rent allowance. P1ssed off the staff who were up to their t!ts with their mortgage.

Also told me about the people who would come in from the Uk and hand their Talk Talk mobile bills in to be paid, only to be told told "we don't pay mobile phone bills, only Gas and electricity sure enough they were back with them 2 months later.

You could n't make it up, we have to tell him to shut up when he is out with us as it runs off him like water but for people who don't know whats going on, it makes their blood boil.
