At least thats who I think it was , on the O'rourke show this morning , I didn't hear all of it , He's from Cavan ..I must say I was very impressed with his attitude , seems as if hes on the right track ...His statement that ,we can look after everyone from child to man really got me thinking ..It made me realise the continuity the GAA has with the community , I'd never thought along those lines till he said it , theres a sort of comfort in those words ...I wish him well in his term ...

if my memory serves me right Pat Fannings time as President of the Gaelic Athletic Association is remembered for the 1970 repealing of the ban on being associated with "foreign games" He had opposed the move, yet received praise for not objecting to the outcome of the national vote,an honest man W/R. Im not a member of any Gaa club but i admire many of the people who are ;theres no many amateur organizations that can brag about having 80,000 fans at there National Finals.

The GAA is a huge force in Irish society , in many of the counties it is the most vibrant element of society . In that respect it has replaced the church largely , but has none of the church baggage thankfully . The fact that everyone mucks in without thinking about personal cost in terms of time and effort is a huge plus .
The playing pitches and social element of clubs all over the island are a credit to all concerned , and should be a model for other sporting organisations . Kids of a certain age are increasingly vulnerable to all sorts of potential dangers society wise , sporting organisations ( not exclusively the GAA ) have a big big opportunity to focus their attentions to positive behaviour by getting them involved in proper recreational activity . |

In 2011 the new GAA president refused to change the throw in time of a championship match between Armagh and Down that clashed with a Champions League final between Utd and Barcelelona.He was then president of the Ulster Council.On the same evening Leinster moved a match between Wexford and Offaly to 5pm in order not to clash and in doing so effect attendance.Progressive thinking you would think from Leinster Council but no real surprises from their friends from Ulster who have found it hard to "move on".

We in Down know all about some of the backwoodsmen who still inhabit some of the corridors of power . Thankfully there are fewer and fewer of them with the passage of time .
Just learned of the death of a former Ulster chief official who always adhered to common sense in his lengthy spell in the corridors of power , people like him are the lifeblood of the GAA ( and other sporting organisations ) . Thats Thursday spoken for , Lord rest his soul . |
