Ireland's Premier Sporting Event gets underway this Sunday with The Gik taking on Rock. Full draw and odds below.

I would urge anyone with free time on their hands to take in a game.  Any game.  The standard is incredibly high, these guys are trained within an inch of their lives. Huge numbers turn up to watch, the support is incredible, the atmosphere and commitment on the pitch have to be seen to be believed.

Any alumnus on here who made their 'S'?

I believe Kevin Blake was a bit of a dinger at Rockwell.

In the thirties Joe Byrne had a slogan we bet on anything.

It could have been Ozymandius Pater but a kid wearing a school cap came in and asked for a price on Blackrock winning the Leinster Seniors Cup.
The kid was first met with derision but then affability set in,he was asked " how many teams in it son " 32 came the reply,in that case I will give you 12/1.
The kid rooted around in his pocket and produced 12 pound 10 shillings.
The bookie was taken aback but felt obliged to bet the kid,net struck.

He realised he had struck a substantial wager for the time so he decided to find out more about the competition, sent a runner to the Independant offices in Middle Abbey Street to get some background.
The runner returned with the bad news, the competition has been run 38 times Blackrock have won it 32 times.

Three months later some school kids returned to the office to collect, they were paid in silence but a kick or two was delivered as the kids exited with their hands full of filthy lucre.

Why do Roscrea play in Leinster?
Report wildmanfromborneo January 21, 2015 6:06 PM GMT
The college is right on the border of Offaly and Tipperary but still would have thought they would play in the Munster version.
Report Ozymandius January 21, 2015 6:19 PM GMT
Technically in Offaly, I believe.  Ditto, Roscrea Rugby Club who also play in Leinster leagues.

They would have won several Munster Schools Cups by now had they played in it.

Nice story Wildman, i dont feel obliged to have a bet with the bookies with the above odds;but im well aware how popular the Leinster Schools Senior Cup is,i remember Tony o reilly was asked what was the highlight of his Career was; and his reply was  captaining the Belvedere team that lost to Blackrock College in the final of the Leinster Schools' Senior Cup in 1954 . It seems Ozy is not the only one who places  Leinster Schools senior cup on a high pedestal.Excited

Yet something has eluded Brian O'Driscoll in his otherwise glittering career. He never won the Leinster Schools Senior Cup - Ireland's blue-riband under-age rugby competition, which has been running since 1888. And it gnaws at him.

The Ireland centre is fond of telling the story of the day he was stopped on a Dublin street by a man his own age. The stranger removed a chain from around his neck and held up a Leinster winner's medal. Good-naturedly, he pointed out that no matter what O'Driscoll achieves in his career, he will never be able to claim that particular honour.

Winning the Leinster Schools Senior Cup in front of up to 20,000 people at Lansdowne Road is the Holy Grail for generations of young men who attend the affluent schools that compete.

Here is a short documentary that gives an insight into the hype surrounding i and the status it confers upon participants.  It is called 'Only in God'.
