Flyingbolt won 16 of his first 18 races, including three championship races at the Cheltenham Festival.
He was a 1-5 shot when winning the Champion Chase and is still the shortest-priced winner in the history of that prestigious race.
The next day, he was an unlucky third in the Champion Hurdle, only outpaced after the last by Salmon Spray and Sempervivum.
Like Arkle, he defied crushing burdens in handicaps, carrying more than 12st to easy victories in the Massey-Ferguson Gold Cup and the Irish Grand National.
He is rated 210 by the respected Timeform organisation, just below Arkle on 212. The third-best chaser in Timeform's history, Mill House, trails them on 191, with Desert Orchid (187) and Kauto Star (184+) further behind.

The new steroid was approved for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1958. It was most commonly administered to burn victims and the elderly. The drug's off-label users were mostly bodybuilders and weight. AAS were placed on the list of banned substances of the IOC in 1976, and a decade later the committee introduced 'out-of-competition' doping tests because many athletes used AAS in their training period rather than during competition.[5]

Frankel raced in 2012 . "Freaks" appear generationally in all sports , ref Beamans jump in 1968 . Most of us guessed about Armstrong , just feel sorry for any "clean " guys he relegated to second in the process .
Nothing about Arkle or Flyingbolt would be related to steroids etc , if anything the only suspicious looking" monster" out there at that time was Mill House , who was huge . Arkle and Flyingbolt were stones better than him as the ratings suggest . I saw them all , Arkle and Flyingbolt in the flesh , Mill House on TV . |

One of the most 'freaky' of sporting records has to be Don Bradman's Test batting average 0f 99.94 -only three others got to just over 60.

Yes vubiant , that is one of the most incredible records ever seen . And the wickets were not covered , you played them as you found them .
Larwood ( who has to be mentioned in the same breath as Bradman ) was one of the best bowlers I ever saw -- newsreels only -- faster than most of the current ones , equal to West Indies best . Only bowler able to challenge Bradman , but Bradman still averaged 55 I think in that "bodyline" series . England shafted him though post series , Aussie friends / contacts managed to put him back on track though , --eternal praise to them . |

Having won a gold and bronze in the 1964 Olympics and followed that up by a world record and two further gold in the 1966 European Cham. Ewa Klobukowska was stripped of her titles in 1967 on the basis she was a man.Coincidentally less than a year later she gave birth to a son.

Steroids were freely available and being used in all sports by the mix 60s, and I don't see any reason to think horseracing was any different.
