International racehorse owner to focus more on Britain next year
Owner Jaber Abdullah looks unlikely to have horses in training in Ireland next season though a final decision has not been made.
The Dubai businessman has enjoyed success with trainers John Oxx and Paul Deegan but yesterday his racing manager Bruce Raymond appeared to confirm racecourse whispers that the owner was losing interest in Irish racing.
“It’s undecided but I don’t think Mr Abdullah will have horses in Ireland next year,” Raymond reported. “He hasn’t bought any yearlings for Ireland but he does have a lot of homebreds and maybe he will send a few over but he has told me he fancies a change from Ireland.”
Abdullah’s enjoyed great success with the Mick Channon yard, most notably with Cheveley Park Stakes winner Queen’s Logic and perennial Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe runner-up Youmzain.
The Paul Deegan-trained Prince Of All carried the Abdullah colours to success twice at Dundalk earlier this year before being sold to Hamdan al Maktoum. The horse ran in Group 3 company at Dundalk last evening.
Akeed Mofeed was the best horse trained for Abdullah by John Oxx, finishing fourth in the 2012 Irish Derby before being sold to Hong Kong where he developed into a Group 1 winner. Abdullah recently moved three horses from one British trainer to Richard Fahey.
Massive blow to Paul Deegan and perhaps another nail in Oxx's coffin.

@JR This was another story covered in Saturday's Irish Field-it prompted the usual call from Mr Ed for a bigger government subsidy. Meanwhile, the elephant in the corner (aka the Hughes fiasco) was blithely ignored. the implication from this is that only "industry insiders" are the paper's constituency and that such insiders are stupid to a man and woman.
Looks like Barry Connell took the lifeboat just in time and the ever-popular P Fenton will be hit with a savage ban when convicted. And Connell remains laughing stock for this stance. |
