Savage sentence on a young man for basically riding to instructions.
John Feane hung him out to dry by saying he wasn't satisfied with the ride and the stewards accepted it.
They never asked themselves why Halpin would ride that way,what was in it for him.
They are obviously going to persist with this nonsense that lots of jockeys are giving horses easy runs against the wishes of their trainer.
The horse he received the ban on was Gaoth Tire,a 3 year old filly out of Tropical Lake by Art Connoisseur.
Tropical Lake was a noble tough as teak mare that won a heap of races on the flat and over hurdle,whoever sent her to Art Connoisseur must have owed the National Stud a favour.
This was her third run,she may be being readied for a few handicaps but one thing is certain Gary Halpin did not give her that easy ride for his own benefit.

They would have done Gary Halpin anyway whether the trainer was happy with the ride or not......this asking the trainer if he is satisfied with the ride is a complete nonsense tbh....just a case of trying to kill two birds with one stone.

They have the toughest of jobs are the bravest of men and are generally treated disgracefully. |

Don't like them Dan.....particularly the flat brigade........you could count on one hand in both codes the ones who have both ability and a bit of class......Geraghty and Smullen being the two stand outs on both criteria.......
Some of them are thick stupid......a lot of them have huge unwarranted ego's......some are criminals.....some are showboaters.....and many are just plain useless..... |

I think that's true of any group of people.
When discussing jockeys you should always factor in the dangerous nature of their job,the constant starving and the widespread bullying. The two jockeys you mention are champions,I know none of these men personally but that should be irrelevant we judge them as jockeys,their personal lives are none of our business we shouldn't be moral policemen. |

Moral policeman.....what are you on about......im saying that Geraghty and Smullen are two world class riders who come across as nice characters as well when interviewed.....there are other top jockeys who come across as not so appealing....
As for their job.....nobody is forcing them to do it..... |

Certainly wasn't for Halpins benefit as you say,still a very blatant case and the head on looks terrible.
Obviously going for a lenient mark but have achieved nothing now,the horse would surely have been placed and may even have won,opened 33/1 and returned 50,s was a bit of a missed opportunity if i owned the horse though accept Chicklets false looking rating may have been the reason they went the way they did. |

You aren't wrong there,very often on their next runs they have proved to have a kink,unreliable,a myriad of excuses. The one the sticks out at the top of my head is Nurse Ryan,trainer, jockey,connections, hanging wasn't good enough at the time,the horse took the herd instinct literally to follow however.

Always handy for a lay Mordin,i'm not so sure they did mess around though if remember right they went for a touch or two,think the horse got banned for 40 days and a fine and it was wrong. Not excusing Gary Halpins ride last time or quiet ones but often there is an excuse.

The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Delvin Road, ridden by S.D. Torrens, and trained by A.J.Martin. Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned. S.D. Torrens, stated that his instructions were to jump off about three-quarters way back in the field, pop away and to do his best. In the race the horse took a keen hold early on, he got him settled, gave him a squeeze in the straight and he ran on under hands and heels. He knew the horse from home and was mindful that it has had leg problems and that the ground was faster than ideal for this horse. A.J.Martin, confirmed the instructions. He stated that this horse has missed a number of engagements due to unsuitably fast ground. He reluctantly allowed the horse to run today but he would ideally want more ease in the ground. The horse was fit and well but he regretted that he hadn't waited for ground with more cut. Regarding the ride, he stated that he had instructed the rider not to resort to the whip given that the ground was not ideal. However he was not satisfied with the ride and felt the rider should either have made more effort or pulled up if he felt the horse was unhappy on the ground. He was of the opinion that the horse could have been placed had more effort been made. |

ha ha.... Good man AJ Martin........ Can just imagine his instrution while giving the jockey the leg up. ..... and it's 1.01 'try your best' was NOT mentioned. 'Reluctantly allowed the horse to run!!!!' What a load of f0cking bullsh1t'. Some boyo. Suppose once ya can get away with it ya might aswell keep at it.
