Why can't pro juice an Andy Murray ? After all Scotland has only a similar pop. and its climate is ,if anything, even worse than Ireland's.

Too many people wasting their time on the gaa'look at Ireland's Olympics medals haul, embarrasing
Report wildmanfromborneo August 26, 2014 10:31 AM BST
We have a far better record than Scotland at producing sport stars.

Our Olympic record is far from embarrassing, its excellent.

There is only four million of us yet we have more medals than India population over a billion, more medals than Indonesia with their huge population.

Mary Peters is Irish we don't include her medals,we don't include medals won by Irishmen before we got independence and there are plenty of them.

We lead the world in every facet of horse racing.

To be fair, he is specifically asking about tennis and bringing up horse racing, which we do excel at, but which has benefited from state funding through the Horse & Greyhound and incredible tax incentives, is not relevant to the question asked.

How much money is pumped into tennis in this country? I would say that it is very very small indeed? The only players that do make it on to the challenger tours have usually benefited from going to the US and through a collegiate system out there. Even when they do go out, it is usually far too late as they need to be identified at a young age, not in their mid teens.

Andy Murray seems to have been a late developer in that he went to Spain when he was 15, but he was a very promising player before that. He looks to be an exception to the rule rather than the product of a successful system in the UK, which has produced two Top 10 players in the past 20 years that I can think of.

Tennis just is not a priority in this country and the funding is not there. If even a fraction of the money that has been poured into horse racing was allocated to these other sports, to set up academies, bring in top coaches etc, I am sure the results would improve, but it is more of a social sport here that would generate next to no income, irrespective of whether we had a few top class players and is a luxury expense that is not likely to be in any budget in the near future.

Aside from Andy Murray; Scotland or indeed the UK[POP OVER 60MILLON] the last man to win the men singles in 1936 was Fred Perry,I dont think our climate has anything to do with it ,plenty of east/european winners in all the grand slams ,if there good enough they will move to a warm climate.

A trawl through the 1st 500 in the world rankings threw up 3 Irish players
James McGee -194
Luke Sorenson -213
Sam Barry -331
( On a slightly encouraging note they are all up considerably in the last year -Sorenson by 800 places)

I can further reveal that the Irish Open tennis champion for 2014 is Joshua Milton. Any prospects there ?
Alas no -he's British and stands at 401 in the list!

Tennis Ireland is beavering away with an academy set-up but, whatever the reasons, it's unlikely that a nimiety of top-class tennisers can be created any time soon.

On the women's front -there is only one inside the top 500 -at 484. Given that women are expanding into new areas like boxing and rugby -one might expect that they would  make some impact in a hitherto undeveloped area of sporting endeavour.

When Tennis in Ireland can attract the ordinary Joe Soap it might have a chance of producing a few decent players. Do these people want to open up their exclusive clubs.

It's worked with Golf.......some smashing club golfers out there, 10 years ago they wouldn't get past the interview stage at some clubs. Thank God that gob****ry is dying out.

Only on the Irish forum are the benefits of a classical education to be seen in all their splendour.GrinHappy

Gant, tennis is a far less expensive sport to play than golf at club level. I think the reason it doesn't attract "the ordinary Joe Soap" is because Joe thinks, wrongly, that it's an exclusive sport and doesn't bother to join up and try it out.

Tennis starts from a low base of visibility and access -so few courts around except for the cities....and also from having so few people who can coach basic skills.
I often think though that given the skill youngsters show in hurling that they would be highly adept at playing shots like the two handed forehand/backhand which could use a hurling grip . These are a large part of the  shot repertoire . Throw in the serve , the overhead smash, the lob and the drop shot and Robert is your aunt's husband.
