THIS week in Bethesda, Maryland for the QUICKEN LOANS National (one remembers it as the AT&T National) at the historic Blue Course of Congressional Country Club.
The new title sponsor inked a multi-year agreement in March.
Tiger missed this event last year through injury (elbow) and this year he returns “rusty” just 87 days after he underwent a procedure to relieve a pinched nerve in his back (microdiscectomy).
He plays in the Pro-Am at 6.30am (off 10th tee) so expect news of his well-being on Wednesday night before the bookies find out. PP 16/1 - 6 places maybeasgoodasitgets so callitasYOUseeit quick !
“BEWARE the injured golfer” was never so apt !
The Tiger Woods Foundation is the host & benefiting charity, in another ‘Invitational Event’ (only 120 players), at this famous venue –
held 3 US Opens (1964, 1997 and 2011), the 1976 PGA Championship, the 1995 US Senior Open and was the venue for the Kemper Open between 1980 & 1986.

Looks like we’re in for a “MIDWEEK SOAKER” according to Accu Weather which will soften the course earlier in the week, as it did so famously in 2011 when RORY decimated the field.
Expect isolated afternoon locally very drenching thunderstorms with the usual high 28/31 degree temperatures.
The high humidity level may also evoke tribute to Ken Venturi's 1964 US Open win in sweltering heat rather than the RORY’s 2011 ‘rein on his parade’ around this track.
THE GOLF COURSE opened in 1924 and since then the Devereaux Emmet design has undergone a number of redesigns,
with Robert Trent Jones Senior overseeing one of these for the 1964 US Open and Rees Jones completing the last redesign for the 1995 Senior and 1997 US Open.
The AT&T event joined the PGA Tour schedule in 2008 to give Congressional a regular slot again,
although the event was held at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania in 2010 & 2011 as Congressional sat out two years to prepare for the 2011 U.S. Open.
The old Poa annua greens were replaced with bent grass in that period.
The Blue Course measures 7,569 yards to a par 71 (the second-longest of the season behind Torrey Pines South 7,698 yards) represents one of the toughest tests in golf.
The 120 players can expect a real challenge and every aspect of their game will have to be working very well to succeed this week.
This is not a course where we can pin point a couple of areas of a game that can prove crucial, as any weaknesses in a player’s game are likely to be exposed.
EXPECT Congressional to play more like U.S. Open than AT&T National with ‘penal’ rough.
IN 2011 Rory McIlroy’s eight-stroke victory at the U.S. Open was the most dominant and awesome of performances in recent golf memory.
Up there with Martin Kaymer this year (well almost) - “To do what (Kaymer) is doing - I think it's ‘nearly’ more impressive than what I did at Congressional.” McIlroy (tweeted, rightly in recognizing Martin’s accomplishment).
IN 2012 Congressional had a stroke average of 73.04 which was +2.04 to par and was the highest stroke average in relation to par of any non-major.
The fairways hit of 56.94% was the 5th lowest on tour, the Greens In Regulation (“GIR”) of 58.9 and was the 9th lowest.
Scrambling of 48.98% was the ranked the 3rd toughest.
IN 2013, Blue averaged 1.124 strokes over par and boasted the second-hardest set of par 5s all season (next to Merion's pair for the U.S. Open).
The Blue Course's trio of par 5s -- Nos. 6, 9 and 16 -- averaged 4.92.
The second-most challenging par 71’s of the nine played in non-majors, it did not get any easier on the greens either as Congressional ranked as the 4th most difficult greens for putts inside of 10 feet.
It is not surprising then to hear that the Par 3, 4 and 5 averages were the 7th, 5th and 5th toughest on the Tour.
IN 2014, what Woods does when he re-enters the ropes will no doubt command constant attention this week (expect the TV ratings to soar).
Woods has won two of the five editions of the event at Congressional, which served as site of the first three in 2007-2009 and again since 2012.
This is a lot of stats to throw up but it serves to underline just how tough this course can and probably will play unless it gets the real soaking that is forecast - which should only make it a little easier.
WHEN trying to find the winner we really are looking for quality players, a proven winner in the past, with solid recent form or a recent winner that has the potential to develop into one of the better players in the game.
They will have to drive the ball well, find as many greens as possible, have a solid week with the putter and have their around the green game in tip top shape !
YES you got it, we could name most of the 'invited field' or Catch Me iyc and the usual buckos could just throw their usual darts.
Defending champion BILL HAAS (is the bet at 33/1 - 6 places PP) flourished en route to a three-stroke margin (at 12 under), ranking 6th in greens in regulation and second in strokes gained-putting. He circled a field-high 25 birdies.
No one else had more than 21 par breakers. He was six under for his 12 trips through the par 5s with one bogey on the 9th.
All the more remarkable considering he also signed for a double bogey and two penalty drops.
The Golden Bear's Memorial form stacks up well here and some of the recent winners have an outstanding record at this venue.
Surprisingly none of this year’s top 8 except Haas (Tied 8) are ‘invited’ to play this week –
although he is among a group of golfers including
Brendon Todd 28/1 (Four straight top 20s sparked by his Byron win),
Billy Horsh8te 40/1 (see below)
and Charley Hoffman 50/1 (T19 at Memorial, winner in waiting) who had excellent weeks at Jack’s Place -
this should certainly enhance all their prospects this week.
Jason DAY 14/1 simply cannot be overlooked - a man for tough events and competitive fields. Runner up spot to McIlroy in the 2011 US Open, 8th here in 2012, T21 last year and T4 in the recent US Open, he clearly will enjoy this test.
Brandt Snedeker 22/1 has very solid form at this venue with an 8th placing in 2007, 5th in 2009, 11th in the 2011 US Open and T8 last year.
He also had quite a good week at Pinehurst No2 with 69 68 72 73 and rounding into form with consecutive top 15s for the first time in 11 months and arrives here in fair form at a venue that clearly suits.
Horschel (over a cliff at this stage at 40/1) is another winner in waiting after his remarkable 2013.
His ball striking is among the best in the game and if he keeps his head, he is here to stay for a long time.
He prefers challenging tracks and he's one of the most accurate drivers on TOUR.
No worse than T26 in his last four starts this season.

More quality than is the norm in Europe these days, to go with what has to be described as a poor quality event Stateside, which has had some much needed gloss put on it by the Return of the Tiger.
Should he backed at 18-1??
It would be quite easy to make a case for both sides, but personally i think its asking too much of him to win on his comeback. Even if he is a massive price against a poor field, on a track he has won twice on, the fact he won a US Open on a broken leg, finished 4th in the Masters off a longer layoff, and will not be this price again for a long time....I havent been swayed....yet!!
I was, and still am, very sweet on Brandt Snedeker for this week. He had the shape of someone who would be very well backed once prices came out, so i took the opening 28-1 without hesitation. Sned has had his share of injuries since threatening to run riot in the golfing world just over a year ago. He has shown a few glimpses since, but serious promise was shown 2 weeks ago in the US Open. I was wary of backing him last week, when he potentially had back issues, but 4 solid rounds finished off with aplomb on Sunday suggest he is in fine fettle. His course record here is top notch, and with his game coming together nicely, he has to be backed. He is still missing a few putts that you would expect him to make, but this just shows how good his long game is at the moment. He is too good a putter not to find his touch soon. When he does, he will win.
Bill Haas won here last year, and given his record(small sample size admittedly) of good performances when defending, he too is worth backing in what is a weak field outside the top 15 or so in the betting.
Brendon Todd is going to be a top player for years to come. He has shown he has what it takes to get over the line, recently contended in a major and is consistently appearing on leaderboards the last few months. Shooting a 74 here on Thursday last year, his back was against the wall, but he went on to finish a very creditable 13th. Only one player who made the cut shot a higher first round score. Todd got to grips with the course, and shouls start quicker this time.
I dont think i have ever backed Jason Day before, and i know at least one person who will have a go at me for backing him!! He doesnt win often enough. But he looks certain to contend at a venue where he finished second at a US Open, and comes here off the back of finishing 4th at this years renewal. That may have come a couple of weeks too soon after returning from injury, but he sgould be cherry ripe for the summer of golf now, and it wouldnt be any surprise at all if he claims an overdue success. With 6 places, in field lacking in depth, some return is expected.
Brendan Steele got off to a cracking start last week, but a poor Thursday and Friday took him out of winning contention. A solid Sunday and a top 5 finish will send him here in good heart, and he has more chance than many priced shorter. I missed the 100-1, but 80s is perfectly acceptable.

In Europe, Henrik Stenson and my new love Martin Kaymer are by far the most likely winners. When Ladbrokes chalked up both at 10-1 on Monday afternoon, i was off the couch and into the car in a shot!! Stenson is very close to his consistently brilliant best, and Kaymer, well he doesnt need anything said about him. He is back to his brilliant ruthless best, and it is going to be a Summer to remember for him, with quite possibly another major to come.
The one worry, would be what he has been doing since Pinehurst, and if i was forced to pick between them this week, it would just about be the Swede. He came here in 2012 when still struggling in the golfing wilderness, yet managed a fine 6th. He is on a different planet now, and one senses he is going to be involved in everything bar the Galway Plate between now and Ryder Cup time.

As I said already, I expect Brandt Snedeker to be right on the premises come Sunday evening. When he hits form he generally becomes a regular on most leaderboards for a sustained period. He is approaching cherry ripe. Add that to his 4 top 11 finishes in 5 visits here, and the 5-4 on a top 20 finish starts to look rather tasty. I will be shocked if I don't collect.
Peter Hanson made his one visit here in the 2011 US Open and really took to the place, improving his card with each round, culminating in a Sunday 67, and a share of 7th. He hasn't made any waves this year, but has had injuries, and has started to show improvement of late. I feel he is better suited to the US tracks than typical European layouts, and he could surprise a few this week. The markets I have got him on side are Top Swede and Top European.
In the Swedish market he has 3 rivals, Carl Petersson who though having a couple of impressive finishes of late, is someone that can throw in the towel very quick if things aren't going well, something which you don't in a 7-4 fav in this type of market. Freddie Jacobson has not delivered on promise shown a few weeks back, performing relatively poorly at venues where more was expected. David Lingmerth is having a poor season, and will be happy to just make the cut and maybe topping his 54th on debut here last year.
The Top Euro market is made up of those two, a few more who I wouldn't fear, and Justin Rose who has gone slightly off the boil I feel, and is worth taking on.
Charlie Hoffman looks the best 3 ball bet of the day. Available at 6-4, I would make him a 4-5 shot to see Sabbatini and Scott Brown. Hoff has been consistent of late, and generally performs to a good standard around here. Sabba is in poor form and has never performed above expectations here. I only have a passive interest in golf so forgive my ignorance but are Rory and GMAC still on speaking terms?
Bad form to file the lawsuit the day before GMAC's wedding which Rory didn't attend due to a critical photo shoot apparently.
I was aware of Rory suing Horizon but didn't know that GMAC is a significant shareholder in Horizon or nor did Rory when I presume GMAC was urging him to sign.
I don't believe it was a term or condition in the contract that Rory would have the same agreement as GMAC (in terms of commercial commission), perhaps it was expressed verbally but that is going to be difficult to prove that it was a term if it is not stated in the contract.I can't really see the case Rory has as he agreed to the commission rates in the contract.

They still appear fine when appearing together in public, but a few interviews from both suggest the love that was there before has eroded.
Two good 3 ball bets in Europe tomorrow morning.
Ross Fisher at 5-2 against Cabrera Bello and Danny Willett is a cracking wager. Fisher shot a solid 2 under today, the other two both shot the lights out with 64s for 8 under. So why expect different tomorrow??
Well, its notoriously hard to back up such a round a round with anything remotely similar, most pros will tell you breaking par is an achievement. Add in that both lack bottle and killer instinct, its very hard to see them racing off into the sunset. Cab Bello in particular has shot so many good Thursday rounds and followed them up with Friday disasters, its nearly expected.
Fisher has good course form around here, and will plod away. He could quite possibly improve on todays round, but I would expect a 70 will be good enough again. I would make him 11-8 fav. 5-2 is massive. 9-4 available in plenty of places, 3.3 on here.
Jamie Donaldson is also 5-2. I wouldn't rate him as strong a bet as Fisher, but certainly overpriced. He too was beaten in this 3 ball today, but their are grounds for expecting a reversal tomorrow.
Mikko Ilonen was impressive in victory, and is a very good frontrunner, and usually hangs around when he gets in contention. But its asking a lot of him to go to the well all weekend again this week. So many times the previous weeks winner can open up with a low round on Thursday, but that is generally fuelled by adrenalin and a poorer round on Friday is usually in the offing.
Sergio too was in contention late on Sunday, but he has travel to overcome this week also. He couldn't seem to get his round going today, and he could mentally throw in the towel if he gets off to a sluggish start tomorrow.

After a shocking start to his 2nd round, he recovered very well indeed, putting well in the main. He will fancy his chances from here, and should continue his good weekend form of late. I would be surprised if Martin gets within a couple of shots.

With Stenson losing one playoff, and Steele depriving himself(and me) at a shot at another with a DB on the last, I'm prob not a man to be listening to at the moment, but........for those who like the golf, and especially the majors, trickle the money onto Stenson for the British Open in the coming weeks.
