Our former prez Mary Mac is now studying canon law in Rome and was being feted by the Belfield campus dons yesterday (Blooms Day) in being awarded their "highest honour" the Ulysses medal-well done that woman!
Irish Times: "Former president Mary McAleese has described as “completely bonkers” Pope Francis’s plan to ask a synod of bishops to advise him on whether church teaching on the family should change.
She said there was “just something profoundly wrong and skewed” about asking “150 male celibates” to review the Catholic Church’s teaching on family life.
Commenting on a planned October synod in Rome on the issue, she said: “The very idea of 150 people who have decided they are not going to have any children, not going to have families, not going to be fathers and not going to be spouses - so they have no adult experience of family life as the rest of us know it - but they are going to advise the pope on family life; it is completely bonkers.
In advance of the meeting, the Vatican has circulated a questionnaire worldwide seeking feedback on pastoral issues of marriage and family.
Mrs McAleese commented: “I wrote back and said I said I’ve got a much simpler questionnaire and it’s only got one question and here it is: How many of the men who will gather to advise you as pope on the family have ever changed a baby’s nappy? I regard that as a very, very serious question.”

"In the public interview , Mrs McAleese also spoke of her admiration at the “stoicism and solidarity” of the Irish public after the economic crash. She said she didn’t view this response as “passive”.
“I think it’s a momentum to get through; I think it’s let’s knuckle down and get through this”.
Asked whether the burden of austerity had been equally shared, she said she believed a lot of elements of Irish society had taken a hit but young people who had bought their homes at the peak of the market had taken “a disproportionate hit”.
Challenging the idea that everyone got greedy during the boom, most people were simply “investing in this thing call home and family”, she said.
I would call this a delicious irony: Mary claims the clerics are ignorant on family life yet she from the highest ivory tower can hold forth on austerity and what it means to you and I. The closest Mary Mac has come to "austerity" I suspect is not having a plain clothes detective on bodyguard duty while she is swotting in the Vatican. If she believes the church is so bonkers what's she ding in the vipers' nest?
Three other luminaries also shared the Ulysses medal yesterday: The three others were Chief Justice Susan Denham, Noeline Blackwell, director general of Free Legal Advice Centres and European Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly.
It seems like a gilt-edged civil service job and pension is the primary requirement to be so honoured.

Would you have prefered her to answer 'only those who have experienced austerity can comment'? She was asked her question and gave her views. Plenty here ave never riden a hoss but comment loquaciously on it n a daily basis.
Her views are solely that, views. The effects of the decisions of church teaching on families on the other hand, have wide reaching consequences and the points she makes are valid and common sense imo. |

That's my main problem Oz-the Government had a golden opportunity to rectify a lot of society's tax injustices etc when first elected-they failed dismally to burden the cosseted class and the instances of sickening pay-offs and "rewards" since have been nauseating. If the article stated she said: "from my privileged position......" I would have some sympathy for your view. The age of "entitlement" is alive and well and crosses all divides |

Seems a lot of people have admiration like Mary for the "stoicism and solidarity of the Irish people" through the crisis but agree with yourself RA,very well talking about how great they coped but you certainly won,t find her with the stoic masses queueing up for the "super 6". |

shes a strange cunning and contadictory woman is our mary.she was in the right place at the right time to avail of the spat beween bertie and albert reynolds.bertie shafted albert and mary rabitted in through the back door to become our president,a job that any half normal person could do with ease.she entered the aras and proceeded to sack half the aras staff.we then endured her for 8 years(or was it 12?)..walking around with a false sincere head on her accompanied by her strange looking lap dog of a husband....pontificating bout this that and the other..she fooled a lot of people but not everyone .then she went to study in rome..and as just made comments that totally contradict what she was doing there....strange indeed

Dead family members are off limits on here as far as I am concerned. I remember chaos on here when your dead wife was brought into the converstation. And that was only a once off. No one would dream of dragging that up on a daily basis on here, yet that precisely what Wonks chooses to do where I am concerned, over a lengthy period. You also seem to be labouring under the illusion that people care about who you block,you can do what you like this is a discussion forum its not compulsory. Kavvie how his McAleese a fraud,she never hid her views,she went and studied theology in Rome,something to be admired and has changed her position slightly something she is entitled to do. I never voted for her and am not in agreement with her current stance but consider her the best President we ever had. If you want to find a fraud look no further than her predecessor,took the job on whilst in receipt of a pension,tried to break the rules in a grab for power and then left early for another job and again picking up yet another pension. |

And not forgetting the wonderful get-out clause "mental reservation" so beloved of those in authority to justing good men doing nothing to allow evil prevail: "Such expressions as "He is not at home" were called equivocations, or amphibologies, and when there was good reason for using them their lawfulness was admitted by all. Having a go at the Catholic Church was brave when they were in the ascendancy now its only band wagon jumping. The intolerant liberals don't allow differing views,they actually outlaw them. The Marine Le Pen press conference a great example of liberal intolerance as is the UAF in England inflicting violence on UKIP supporters. |
