Poor enough fare in the week before the Big One, but hopefully better results than last week!
Dustin Johnson is not someone I have found myself siding with too often, I think he throws away his fair share of winning opportunities, and doesn't win as often as his talent warrants. But in a weak field, with much bigger question marks over most of his market rivals, he rates a solid proposition at 16-1. DJ has had some poor results this season, but he has started to fins some form of late, and he will have no excuses not to produce a peak performance this week at a venue he is obviously very comfortable at. I have a feeling he might not just win it, but win it by a landslide.
I fancy quite a few bigger priced ones in this event, but one other at the head of the market worthy of support is defending champ Harris English. Another who has been slightly disappointing of late, but he was imperious in closing out here last year, and returning here might be just what he needs to spark a return to the form which made him one of the most exciting young players on the planet.
Scott Stallings should have won here last year(having backed him, I was furious!!), but somehow contrived to chunk a wedge from 80 yards, about 40 yards short into the stream on the short 15th. The rest as they say is history(as was my cash!). He comes here in no sort of form this year, but Stallings has a history of popping up out of nowhere, and at 100-1 in a weak field, it is definitely worth taking the chance that he fancies it this week. Playing with Phil and English in a marquee 3 ball might just get his juices going early doors.
Not so long ago David Toms was an absolute certainty to bag at least a top 5 around here. He has had a few indifferent results here in more recent years, but the dual winner has showed definite signs of a return to form of late, and its not hard to envisage him being involved come Sunday.
Robert Allenby has virtually disappeared off the golfing planet, but every year he lands here, he seems to find some serious form. From completely out of the blue. This year he is actually in better form, having made 5 out of his last 6 cuts. He can again get his name on the leaderboard come Sunday, on what is a real horse for courses venue.
Robert Garrigus is another who should have a St. Jude title under his belt. But he twice visited water, and went on to triple bogey the last, to find himself in a playoff with Westwood and Karlsson in 2010. He was a player whom I expected to take the next step last year, and join the big boys, but he ended up being very disappointing. He has taken time to rediscover his touch and confidence, but his game has been looking to come right of late, and where better to announce his return to the bigtime.
Finally, what I believe is the best bet of the bigger priced ones is Camilo Villegas. Villegas has not really delivered on his promise of about 5 years ago, but has showed flashes of that potential over the last 12 months, and it invariably comes on tougher layouts, such as this. He has performed with great credit here, even when completely out of form, yet arrives here this time around on the back of an excellent showing at the Memorial. He also warrants top 20 support.

Initially, I wasn't planning on getting involved in the Lyoness Open, but when Joost Luiten is as short as 5-1 there has to be some value somewhere.
At the head of the market, I would much rather the 11-1 on a prolific winner like Miguel Angel Jimenez than the 5s on Luiten or 9s on Wiesberger. Neither are as talented or as adept at getting over the line. 5 of Big Migs last 7 victories have come in playoffs, he certainly knows how to get it done. Its mentioned the course might be longer than what he ideally wants. I wouldn't overly worry about it. If class outs this week, it will be the likeable Spaniard who raises the trophy.
Bradley Dredge, Anthony Wall, Craig Lee and Damien McGrane all look overpriced.
Dredge seems to be finally rediscovering something approaching his past form.
Wall is simply too big for such a poor event.
Craig Lee too has performed very well in much better events than this, and has shown signs recently that he is ready to take a hand in a finish again.
Damien McGrane is very interesting, and certainly should be backed. In a few markets!! He comes here in terrible form, but it wouldn't be the first time he has arrived here in similar vein and performed above his odds. When on song, he has a penchant for going low on a Thursday, so is worthy of support in the first round leader market, and also top Irish market.

Ye poor enough before the us open next week, i'll start of with America were im with you call,going for Dustin,has been playing ok the last few events,I just think the putter been letting him down,He will come into this week in a good frame of mind tho,having won this event before,had him backed that year in 2012,im also in the same thinking as you call,if he gets going in a good frame of mind on Thursday he could win this in a canter,hes also out early on Thursday morning which will be a great help,

Had backed Stevie G myself last week Padlock. Thought he was unlucky, putts just wouldn't drop for him on Sunday, until that dinger on 18.
Then backed Bubba at 6-4 Sunday evening. I swear I must jinx that nutter!! Twice this year I have backed him prior to last round. Both times he has looked a certainty only to somehow contrive to throw it away. The FESJC opened up for business in 1958. It moved to TPC Southwind in 1989 and was heavily renovated in 2004. This is the 57th edition of the tournament and moved from par 71 to par 70 following the 2004 edition. We go back to 2005 for any relevant scoring comparisons. There have only been seven first-time TOUR winners in 56 previous editions. Interestingly, three of those have happened in the last four years as Dustin Johnson (2010), Lee Westwood (2011) and Harris English have won in their debuts in Memphis. Since 1993, only Dickie Pride (1994), Harrison Frazar (2012) and English have made the FESJC as their first win on TOUR. In 56 events, only four, foreign-born players have been victorious. Westwood was the last to accomplish this. Before him it was Gary Player, Greg Norman and Nick Price. In the last six seasons, three Sundays have gone to extra holes to determine a winner so maybe another late night of cards for call it asucit. Harris English, 23, is the youngest champion. He’s only one of three players since the turn of the century to win in his 20s. He joins Notah Begay and Dustin Johnson. Woody Austin was 43 when he won in 2007. Jeff Maggert was 42 when he won in 2006. Since the renovation in 2004, only Justin Leonard (2005, 2008) has multiple victories on this track. David Toms went fourth, WIN, WIN, second, T10 and third, T37 and second from 2002-2009. Toms is one of three players (Lee Trevino, 1971-72; Dave Hill 1969-70) to accomplish this. The course record, since the renovation, is 62, last set by Woody Austin in 2007. Brian Gay fired 262 (-18) to set the tournament record in 2009. Gay and Austin (2007) have won this event by five shots, the largest margin of victory. There have been only four wire-to-wire winners. Between 2001 and 2009 three of those took place. Brian Gay was the last player to accomplish this. Jimmy Walker, Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson are the only players on TOUR with multiple victories in the 2013-14 season. Patrick Reed (added 50's 6 places PP) is the only player of this triumvirate that is teeing it up this week. You've all heard of Patrick Reed and his comments after winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship in early March. Reed said after his win, "I feel like I'm one of the top five players in the world. I feel like I've proven myself," which raised plenty of eyebrows around the golf world. Reed wasn't lying when he said he has proven himself, winning three PGA Tour events since August, but the bravado he showed was one of the reasons people started raising their eyebrows. The comments have followed Reed around since his win at Doral - on the Friday at the Masters Bubba Watson, the then leader at 7-under par, took a jab at the 23-year-old. Asked about what he's learned since his Masters win in 2012, Watson gave up this gem of an answer..... “Learning to be a good dad, learning to be a better husband, it takes time on you, it takes energy,” Watson said. “And then learning how to refocus, repractice, get back to the level that I think I should be at ... top-25 player in the world. Freddie Jacobson is an excellent bet at 11-8 for this afternoons 3 ball, as is Robert Garrigus at 5-4. Those looking for an afternoon interest could do worse than combining those two and Stewart Cink 6-5, in a Trixie.

POD (did not backed him) opened the FedEx St. Jude Classic with a 2-under-par 36-32=68, good for very early possession of the clubhouse lead.
He went out in the first threesome off the 10th tee today. Lift, clean and place in preferred lies is in play today with the threat of inclement weather this afternoon, not that that mattered much to Harrington. He landed only nine greens in regulation, but limited the damage to two early bogeys (Nos. 11 and 12), the first via a three-putt from just inside 16 feet on the par 3. Elsewhere, he circled four birdies, including three straight immediately after the turn. Two of his birdies on the day stretched just outside 11 feet, but the highlight of the round was an 11-yard hole-out from in front of the green at 1. Shawn Stefani: Already finished day 1 at E par T32 and still 200/1 5 places PP - form an orderly cue. He was the 54-hole leader in 2013 before shooting 76 and finishing T7. Closed with a 76 to share seventh place, but led the field in strokes gained-putting and co-led in par-5 scoring. He’s made five of his last six cuts on TOUR. Since his promotion to the Major Medical category with an extremely well-positioned start at Houston (solo fifth), the last time he teed it up he was T11 at Las Colinas as he closed 66-67-67 where he ranked third in total driving and co-led the field in greens in regulation. Currently leads the TOUR in total driving and sits 32nd in strokes gained-putting. Camilo Villegas: With top 10s in three of his last four starts in Memphis I would have thought he would have been more enticing this week. His T37 at Memorial last week broke a four-tournament run of MC and he only has one top 25 in 19 starts this year. At -2 after day 1 T7 so 50's might be worth a chance (not for me). Retief Goosen: With finishes of T29, T15, T3 in his last three from 2009-2011 Goosen could be used as a calculated flier this week. He’s made five cuts on the bounce and even threw up a 65 last time out at HPBNC. In the clubhouse at -4 and no value at 18's. Padraig Harrington: Goosen and Harrington both fit into the Austin-Maggert category this week as the 40-somethings who might make some noise. David Toms is in his own category so pipe down. With finishes of T13 and T10 last year, the Irishman has flashed some course form in Memphis. He was eight-under and lurking at HPBNC before a final round 74 did him the last time out. That was his first top 25 since last year’s U.S. Open on U.S. soil. THIS IS YOUR ONE CHANCE PEOPLE! Finished day 1 at -2 but wouldn't touch him at 80's never mind the current 40's. The 2010 co-runner-up signed for a 9-over-par 38-41=79 before calling it quits. He went 0-for-8 in birdie chances and squared three bogeys, one double and built a snowman on the par-4 17th hole. Just need the other Johnson to get his act together in Memphis TN (and Hoey too in Austria please). Should have included these fancies in my previous post (thought I had posted it on the Golf Forum) - thunderstorm delay must have upset my focus. Zach Johnson: Yeah, yeah, yeah, one top 25 in his last five starts, I know but I’ll stick with the proven vet in a light field. (nearly over a cliff with this guy ffs - on at 25's, along with the charge on the other Johnson, + Stefani & Harmon in St.Jude) He crushes par threes and fours and a tough, tight course should cater to his strengths of painting fairways and greens. He has T5 and T12 in four trips to Memphis. Notable mentions to: David Toms: This is a recording: David Toms went fourth, WIN, WIN, second, T10 and third, T37 and second from 2002-2009. He’s also made six on the bounce including T5 his last time out at Colonial. Freddie Jacobson: He was T3 two weeks ago at Colonial on a course where guys have to be on their toes so I would expect another solid effort on another tight course again this week. He’s second on TOUR in total putting and 19th in scrambling and that helps EVERY week. This will be his 12th consecutive trip to Memphis and he’s played seven of nine weekends after the renovation. Billy Horschel: He co-led the field in GIR last week at Memorial and that led to only five bogeys on the week (second-least). He racked up 50 pars and got up-and-down from the beach every time. His putter didn’t cooperate but he still found a way to finish T15. Garrigus withdrew citing a wrist injury - he called it as it is - following some banking activity the previous night with his small putter.
Garrigus is one of the longest drivers in the golfing world, with an average drive of 310.5 yards in 2007. He is one of the few players who can hit a ball over 350 yards. He led the PGA Tour in driving distance in both the 2009 and 2010 seasons with average distances of 312 and 315 yards, respectively. He is also noted for using a putter only 28.5 inches in length, about six inches shorter than a standard putter. At the 2010 St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, Garrigus, playing in the final group, had a three-shot lead going into the 72nd hole, a long par four.
He pulled his tee shot into the water hazard which flanks the hole's left side. After taking a penalty drop a long way back, he hit his third shot straight left, caught a tree left of the hazard and fell straight down. He punched out to the fairway and hit his fifth shot onto the green, within 35 feet of the hole. He two-putted from there, resulting in a triple bogey 7. A three-way sudden-death playoff with Lee Westwood and Robert Karlsson then began. On the first hole they played, the 18th, Garrigus's drive carried too far and came to rest against the trunk of a tree, right of the fairway. He chipped out and hit his third shot to 12 feet. His par putt lipped out and he made bogey. Karlsson and Westwood both made par, eliminating Garrigus, who finished tied for second place. The playoff was eventually won by Westwood, who birdied the fourth sudden-death hole. Garrigus atoned for his near-miss at Memphis in the final tour event of the 2010 season, the Children's Miracle Network Classic in suburban Orlando, Florida. Needing a high finish to earn his tour card for 2011, he entered the final day 13 under par, five shots behind the leader Roland Thatcher and one behind first-round leader Chris Stroud. Thatcher had reached 21-under in his third round, before a double bogey, bogey finish. After a fast start, with five birdies in his first seven holes, Garrigus caught Thatcher, who had parred his first seven holes, turning the rest of the tournament into a virtual two-man battle, although several other contenders were within striking distance. Thatcher extended his lead with three birdies around the turn, before a bogey on twelve, as Garrigus in the group in front birdied thirteen, moving the pair level again. After Thatcher bogeyed sixteen, Garrigus held the solo lead in a tournament for the first time since Memphis. A further two-shot swing on the 17th, where Garrigus made birdie-3 to Thatcher's bogey-5, followed by a final-hole par, sealed his first professional win, by three strokes. With the victory, Garrigus earned an exemption on the PGA Tour through the end of the 2012 season. Prior to the tournament, Garrigus was 179th on the Tour, which would have meant a loss of his Tour card. Thatcher finished second while Stroud salvaged a seventh, still good enough for a full season tour card for 2011. Immediately after finishing his final round in Orlando, Garrigus spoke openly in a television interview on the Golf Channel, about his triumph over substance abuse, his subsequent improved play, and his joy at closing out the season with a tournament victory, which made up for his struggles at the Memphis tournament earlier in the season.[9] In an article that appeared in Golf Digest in July 2011, Garrigus admitted that during the 2002 season, he and several other golfers on the Nationwide Tour (then the Buy.com Tour) smoked marijuana during events:[7] "Oh yeah, there were plenty of guys on the Nationwide Tour who smoked in the middle of the round. We always talked about it. You could go in the Porta John and take your drags." In 2003, he entered a rehabilitation center near San Diego for a 45-day program. His newfound sobriety was almost immediately tested. Before entering rehab, he had left money for his roommate to keep the house and pay bills. The roommate instead used it for drugs and gambling; when Garrigus returned the night before he was to play in a sectional qualifier for the U.S. Open, he found the locks changed and the electricity disconnected. The roommate had left town to avoid gambling debts, leaving behind a substantial quantity of marijuana and a note reading, "Hope rehab was great. Have fun." As Garrigus would say. "I stood there for a minute, and then I grabbed the weed and threw it in the garbage. Then I took the refrigerator and threw it out with the chicken, everything. I called the electric company to get them to turn on the power. When I wake up the next morning, I didn't realize until I get to the golf course that my roommate had been using my putter. So I race back to the house at 140 miles per hour, get my putter, race back just in time for my tee time. I have no warm-up, no caddie, and my clubs are on a pull cart. I shoot 70 and miss by two shots. I told myself that wasn't too bad after 45 days without hitting a ball. Weather continues to be a factor at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. Many players had to complete their first round Friday morning after Thursday’s 3 1/2-hour delay. Play was suspended for the first time Friday at 1:03 p.m. Play resumed at 2 p.m., but it was suspended 15 minutes later. Players never returned to the course.
