2014 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying TODAY.
Players who survive, or are exempt from, local qualifying will convene in this second and final stage for U.S. Open hopefuls.
This year there are 12 sectional sites – 10 in the U.S., one in England, and one in Japan.
The international qualifiers take place on May 26, while the U.S. qualifiers are on June 2.

Played over 36 holes in one day, sectional qualifying is a test of skill and endurance, with only a handful of available spots at each site –
the number of qualifying spots is determined by the quality and quantity of the field at each location.

The odds may seem long, but players who earn their way into the U.S. Open field via sectional qualifying have gone on to win the championship throughout its history, most recently Lucas Glover in 2009.
Michael Campbell, the champion the last time the U.S. Open was held at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in 2005, also earned his way into the field that year via qualifying.

Scott Langley has gained entry into next week's U.S. Open.
The lefty filled one of the two openings created with withdrawals today.

Thomas Bjorn has withdrawn from next week's U.S. Open suffering from neck and shoulder injuries.
Richard Sterne has also withdrawn due to continued recovery from hip surgery.

No player has ever won the week before the U.S. Open, and then win the U.S. Open.

Only eight players in history have won the week before claiming a major championship:

Byron Nelson: 1945 Chicago Open; PGA
Ben Hogan: 1946 Winnipeg Open; PGA
Sam Snead: 1949 GGO; Masters
Art Wall: 1959 Azalea Open; Masters
Lee Trevino: 1971 Canadian Open; The Open Championship
Sandy Lyle: 1988 GGO; Masters
Phil Mickelson: 2006 Bell South; Masters
Tiger Woods: 2007 WGC-BI; PGA
Phil Mickelson: 2013 Scottish Open; The Open Championship

Notable WD's (just for the record from the St Jude this week)

Matt Kuchar ... He was a late entry, but has elected to take his first week off in the last five - (to prepare for the US Open no doubt).

Kevin Na ... His playoff loss at Muirfield Village came with a perk. He vaulted 30 spots to 40th in the Official World Golf Ranking and will officially qualify for the U.S. Open when the next update is used to help fill the field. The top 60 in the OWGR at the conclusion of this weekend will gain entry.

Seung-yul Noh ... Withdrew after sharing medalist honors at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio. His 36-hole effort included a hole-in-one.

Charley Hoffman ... Failed to qualify for the U.S. Open at the Columbus, Ohio, sectional, so he'll take two weeks off.

Victor Dubuisson ... Returned to action following a shoulder injury (tendon) and promptly lost in a playoff at the Nordea Masters. Gamers are still trying to wrap their heads around what to expect short- and long-term, but to excel so quickly after taking four weeks off is reason to remain excited.

Erik Compton ... Headed to the U.S. Open via the sectional qualifier in Columbus, Ohio.

Bookies prices all very poor at moment. Hopefully they stick their head above the water tomorrow. Boyles still advertising 5 places. Surely 6 is a minimum for any firm wishing to take more than a handful of small bets. Some couple of weeks of sport coming!

Seems rough will not be as deep as in other years Frank. Instead the courses defences seem to be built around the 'upturned saucer' greens. Though if the weather is as bad as suggested, the greens may be soft enough that more long irons than they would want, will hold the greens. Though I still doubt they will let anything or anyone conjure up a score anywhere near as low as Rory did when winning.

This is nt the normal Us Open course for those playin on name - a lot has been changed and its gonna pay to be very long off the tee(would nt worry about accuracy) and a decent touch around the greens, fairways v wide with v little rough

Things changed are

Increase fairway widths Fairways were widened by as much as 50%, offering more strategic options in playing holes from tee to green.

Removal of rough All rough was eliminated, establishing two heights of grass: greens and everything else.

Reintroduction of natural areas 35 acres of irrigated turf were removed, restoring natural areas of sand, wire grass, pine straw and a variety of native grasses.

Turf maintenance 650 irrigation heads were eliminated, and the centerline irrigation was restored.

Wiregrass More than 200,000 plants were added

Overseeding Eliminated during the winter months, allowing for firm, fast conditions throughout the year

Increased length Thirteen new tees were added to the championship course, increasing the total championship length by more than 300 yards, to 7,565 from 7,214.

Bunker modifications Several bunkers were restored, eliminated or reshaped based on aerial images of the course from the 1940s, and bunkers were edged to create rustic appearance

Greens Only two (15 and 17) were modified slightly to increase hole locations.

Cart paths Relocated and concrete removed.

Five Additional Players Earn U.S. Open Spots Monday, June 9, 2014 By USGA

Two additional players have earned full exemptions into the Championship, bringing the number of fully exempt players to 74.
Additionally, three alternates from sectional qualifying were added to complete the 156-player field.

Kevin Na is ranked No. 40, is making his fourth U.S. Open appearance
- recorded his best Open finish in 2012 when he tied for 29th at The Olympic Club -
- recently finished second at the PGA Tour’s Memorial Tournament and has five top-10 finishes this season.

Bernd Wiesberger, who is No. 60 in the OWGR, is playing in his first U.S. Open.
The 28-year-old from Austria finished second at the Lyoness Open last week and moved up nine spots in the ranking.
He lost in a playoff to Mikael Lundberg on the first extra hole.

The USGA held five spots in the field for those players who could potentially qualify by being in the current top 60 of the OWGR.
Since Na and Wiesberger were the only players to earn an exemption, three alternates from sectional qualifying were added to the field.

They are Craig Barlow and amateurs Cameron Wilson and Brandon McIver.

Barlow was the first alternate from the Daly City, Calif., sectional.
He will play in his sixth U.S. Open.
His best finish was a tie for 26th at Winged Foot Golf Club in 2006.
Barlow also played in the 2005 Open at Pinehurst No. 2.

Wilson, the 2014 NCAA Division I individual champion, was the first alternate from the Purchase, N.Y., sectional.
He made a birdie putt on the sixth playoff hole in qualifying to earn the spot.
Wilson, who earned first-team All-America honors at Stanford University this year, is playing in his second U.S. Open
(he missed the cut in 2012 at The Olympic Club).

McIver, a rising junior at the University of Oregon, was the first alternate from the Creswell, Ore., sectional.
He is playing in his first Open.

Pablo Larrazabal is still in the field (was 60th last week). George Coetzee, & Matteo Manassero just miss out.

Move over BMW...Martin Kaymer is the new German ultimate driving machine !

KAYMER has held the 36-hole lead on 7 previous occasions and gone on to win 4 times.
Most recently as we know in the 2014 Players Championship.

Martin K WILL BE the first player to win the U.S. Open and PLAYERS in the same season...

AND the first player to win on the US tour on Mothers Day & Fathers Day in the same year.
