JOCKEY Eddie O'Connell has been banned from riding for four years after being found guilty by the Referrals Committee of the Turf Club of being in breach of rules following a long running investigation of lay bets made on Yachvili, whom he rode and who was pulled up in a beginners chase at Downpatrick on September 21 2011.

The bets in question were brought to the attention of the Turf Club by Betfair.

James Lambe, trainer of Yachvili who was a 12-1 shot, was cleared of all charges in relation to the matter at the Turf Club on Monday morning, but O'Connell was found to be in breach of two rules and has been banned for four years.

After the penalties were imposed, Andrew Coonan, solicitor for O'Connell, said: "Obviously Eddie is very disappointed at the outcome and will be considering his options including his entitlement to appeal. It has been a difficult time for him personally."

O'Connell was also ordered to pay €10,000 towards the Turf Club costs relating to the whole investigation and the hearing.

how much did he lay it for??
Report J.R.Hartley May 19, 2014 7:54 PM BST
Surprised Lambe got away with it tbh.....Eddie can have no complaints.
Report irish_guy_13 May 19, 2014 9:38 PM BST
hardly lay'd it for that much if it was a 12/1 shot? maybe place lay?
Report Kelly May 19, 2014 10:03 PM BST
There wouldn't be much of a market for a Downpatrick chase  , either win or place on here . If I wanted to pull a stroke on a horse (it would have to be in running , no-one can quibble with in running prices , sometimes they are a slip of the hand / button press) it would  be out in the lead early , surprising how many punters dont imagine the last 2 miles still to go .

Saw a couple of markets today where someone was betting on the place market in relation to the odds associated with the win market . At least thats what I assumed . But with delayed pictures you always assume the worst scenario .

Good Lord , that's some ban , I feel for the lad , but something has to give when betting on horses to lose ..Punters need to feel safe when placing a bet ...A promising career gone up in smoke , a reminder how disposable jockeys are in some eyes.. Brings to mind the horse that ran at Ballinrobe awhile back , trainer walk away clean as a whistle , poor jockey left to simmer for a few months as well ...
Report J.R.Hartley May 19, 2014 10:25 PM BST
He was always going to be hit hard after taking the Turf club to court in a bid to over-rule any sanctions imposed on the pair of them.....poorly advised imo.

God knows how Lambe has walked!
Report insideinfo May 19, 2014 11:00 PM BST
do these ejits not weigh up risk/reward?? not advocating criminality but rather than taking a few hundred quid or wotever out of a 12/1 shot and risking your career and livelihood why not just get a 10k overdraft or loan and not pay it back, the repercussions would be alot less for a much higher reward!! or just run up a tab with a bookmaker and knock him lol
Report tony57 May 20, 2014 10:58 AM BST
there has always been skulduggery in racing as we all know..but laying horses ..imo..is the biggest fault we have..

Johnny Ward in Racing Post thinks Mollyanna would be a timely winner for Eddie.Hmm...Johnny he should not be let in the gate of Clonmel.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 22, 2014 12:08 PM BST
Why should he not be let in the gate at Clonmel ?

These are kangaroo courts, guilt by association is the norm.
To take away a mans livelihood you should have to show he received some financial reward for the alleged misdeed.

I am waiting for the report but presume it will be similar to others.
Report paulie wallnuts May 22, 2014 12:18 PM BST
I had to laugh when I read the comment from Ward regarding the timely winner.....strange to say the least.....thought Ward wouldn't go there to be honest.....but then again any man who thought mollyanna would be evens in the first race.....now that shows a distinct lack of either homework or knowledge.....its evens to be favourite id say......
Report wildmanfromborneo May 22, 2014 12:56 PM BST
I'd love a bit of that evens to start favourite Mollyanna in the first.

She is back running against mares, her main danger Carrigmoorna Rock is making her debut over hurdles and has to concede 8 pounds.

More proof if it was needed that most businessmen when turning to gambling turn into blithering idiots.

Everything about this lay was bungled, deposit ten grand in some small punting ladies account, put it up in the place market.

The sinister part for me is Eddie OConnell has lost his livelihood because others were laying.
Is there a shred of evidence that he was corrupt, did he receive any financial reward,no but that doesn't seem to matter

Was reading the Sligo spotlights the other night and Johnny described a horse, can't remember which one as 'beaten by a car ride' last time; Never heard that one before.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 23, 2014 2:57 PM BST
Plenty to see here.

Robert Martin is an owner and has signed up to the rules,he admitted the breach of rules by laying his own horse.
The fate of his " associates " is murky as what jurisdiction do the Turf Club have over private individuals,do all private individuals have to know the arcane laws of private clubs.

Eddie OConnell received no financial reward for this alleged wrongdoing, their only evidence is phone calls between Martin and OConnell but we don't know the content of these calls,as an owner he is entitled to talk to his jockey.

The evidence against OConnell is all circumstantial and surely not enough to take away a mans livelihood for four years.
Report by purpose May 23, 2014 3:13 PM BST
Presume the conversation went like this.Eddie were gonna take 10 out of this in the place market but you go out and do your absolute best and finish as close as you can.Go on down town and have a little swifter Boneo.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 23, 2014 3:18 PM BST
You correctly use the word presume and that's all they did and to me that's not good enough.

You keep presuming I am drinking all the time but you could hardly convict me of drink driving on that presumption, you need evidence.
Report by purpose May 23, 2014 3:22 PM BST
You need to be driving the car for that to happen but listening to you Yachvilli must have drove himself around Downpatrick.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 23, 2014 3:32 PM BST
Your reading of the situation is far and away the most likely,I don't dispute that but they have no concrete evidence.

They have taken his livelihood away on the basis of probability, that's not good enough.

The double jeapordy scenario kicks in again here and is a favourite of the Turf Club, you punish a jockey by a ban and now that he is on the ground you start to kick him again by imposing these dubious costs on him.

This also happens in Stewards Inquiries,in the recent case with Ebanorum the jockey Declan McDonagh was penalised by losing the race he is then further  penalised by getting a ban, that's a double punishment and unfair.
Report by purpose May 23, 2014 3:44 PM BST
You know as well as i do that its hard enough to back a winner or lay a loser for that matter without letting people wreak havoc on betting exchanges. The people who backed that horse that day had there pockets picked. When you catch the pickpockets you gotta punish them theres no other way.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 23, 2014 3:54 PM BST
You think you caught the pickpocket but when searched he hadn't got the wallet on him.

This was a botched job alright but this happens every day for much larger amounts, two examples of judicious laying were Shereza in the handicap at Navan and the Noel Meade horse in the Sligo bumper.Neither were stopped but in Cops And Robbers style layers had information and wrong word was spread to feed the waiting layers.
Report by purpose May 23, 2014 4:04 PM BST
Horses can drift alarmingly that i do agree but when people are opening up a/cs and go from laying one for a fiver to 10k its red alert time.Good pickpockets usually have  a partner to handle the stolen goods.
Report kavvie May 23, 2014 4:09 PM BST
there was bad word for the meade one in sligo.for what ever reason.the bookies were out to lay it.the layers on here followed suit.nothing untoword there.if nina wasnt on it or meade didnt train it  would have been 10/1   supply and demand rules..
Report wildmanfromborneo May 23, 2014 4:21 PM BST
It was red alert time because of the ludicrous way Martin went about laying it.

They seem to me to have just back tracked,a huge unusually lay therefore jockey must have stopped it,they came up with no evidence whatsoever against OConnell.

Yachvili was hampered at the first fence that day, that wasn't manufactured the horse got himself detached again not manufactured and he just dropped further and further behind.

There was far more evidence against an Elliott trained horse ridden by Paul Carberry at Punchestown, this lad was odds on in a Punchestown handicap hurdle and was yanked back after the last hurdle on that short run in.

Barry Cash quite blatantly from some way out got into a battle with Majestic Benbulben, obvious to me but because they weren't alerted to it nothing done.

its the small man being punished again and made an example of.sickening really.i was told one recently from a big yard wouldnt be places.it wasnt.blatant as you ever seen.they seen what i seen.they dont want to act...
Report dj876 May 23, 2014 4:40 PM BST
Is Martin Scruff the Elliot horse you're referring to there Wildman, had won on the bridle at Thurles and was running under a mandatory penalty at Punchestown (due to go up 18 odd pound). You're normally a sympathiser of Mr.Elliot's and to be fair his drifters can't be always ruled out.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 23, 2014 4:48 PM BST
Martin Scruff is correct but that was an instance where the trainer could have been blameless.

Elliott has some for want of a better word some frightening type owners, something that is slightly holding him back.

The stable that seems to have lost contact with some layers this year is Dermot Weld, some massive worryingly drifters have hacked up of late.
Mustajeeb in Leopardstown,Tarfasha and Zafeen in Naas. All three were fancied by the stable but some layers got it wrong in spectacular fashion.
