Kelly..... a game where you don't have to take yer pants off is not really a sport......its a bit like darts and snooker.....ya could have a drink in between the gaps in the play......

Very witty there pw -but any sporting umpire would call that remark a wide !
All sports have different dynamics as well as  subtleties in the strategies they can employ.
Cricket can appear to the untutored outsider like a game where little happens but the equations are always changing and it produces drama and tension like any other sport.
I've been following it since the 1960s and it has given me much pleasure and excitement.
I can still recall the emotions of listening to the radio commentaries from distant sunny climes as the mighty West Indies and Australia did battle with England. In fact Sir Garfield Sobers was my first sporting superstar -a supreme athlete if ever there was one.
Too bad you don't 'get it' -but you can still enjoy the spectacle of guys with their pants off rolling around in the mud.

Test Cricket is its purest form.

The IPL is not like the cricket you might have seen when you were growing up , Paulie .  Its a different game played to a different tempo .  So far in this match I have matched 50 times what I matched yesterday in the Tyrone -Down match , and they have only played a third of the match so far .

Its more profitable than the racing too  , and the bookies will lay decent bets , unlike the bean counters associated with racing these days .

Neill D , Mick O'Connell was the MAN when I was still playing , beautiful athlete . But Down knew how to stop him , tactics I suppose , he never played well against us , compared with what he did to other teams .

Keith Miller was MY hero , vubiant , maybe before your time .  Not only was he the best Aussie I ever saw , all rounder that is  , he was also a superb Aussie rules player , represented his state on 77 occasions I think .

Some years ago i asked my brother in law what his fav sport was and he replied listening to cricket on the radio while  doing his rounds as a doctor.... to each his own.  p.s he was born in Kerry.

While the GAA were blessed with great  commentators on our native games ( both the Michaels had very distinctive styles ) , cricket also had a succession of great commentators who were picture painters on the radio . Arlott I grew up with , his west country burr as distinctive as our Kerry Michaels voice . John Arlott didn't have the cupla focal though , that ability to think and communicate equally  superbly in 2 languages is very , very rare .

Yes , Frank , and he was fair too . Brilliant and insightful commentator , and his voice encouraged belief .

Have to say Kelly some of the best catches iv seen have been from Benny coulter over in the field unreal jump on him

Yes one , Benny is one of the best we have had since the mid nineties . Unfortunately has copped a lot of injuries , strange how that seems to happen to the better than average players as against the average players . And the slow boats to China seldom get injured .

The best fielder I ever saw was Declan Barron of Cork -1970s vintage.
His hands were ball magnets.

The best fielder I ever played with / against was P T Treacy of Fermanagh . Fermanagh not noted for great footballers . Think P T has a clatter of Railway Cup medals , he played midfield for Ulster continuously for about 10 years or more , timing the jump the dart . And a nice guy to boot .

Only remember Barron vaguely , vubiant . The high catching is a feature we should all be striving to encourage , it is spectacular and the punters on the terraces love it . Aussie rules have got it more or less right in that regard .

I agree that clean fielding is one of the better attractions of Gaelic F/ball.
I've often felt it a pity that there is so much bunching under a dropping ball -it would be better if just two players went for it and there would be less scrimmaging and fouling.
For that reason too I favour a reduction to something like 13-a-side which would surely cut down on overcrowded passages of play.  Incidentally it would also help counties and clubs who are stretched to come up with a full contingent of competent players.
Will never happen I know.

I am not the only one to appreciate Pollard . Have just shown him displaying some basketball skills , impressive .  They also reckon he could play centre half forward on any Aussie Rules team and win the Brownlow medal .  Wonder has he any Irish connection ?
