FFS Snap , the season has hardly started , plenty of time ..You hardly expect him to going full out this early , I'm sure after this weekend you will see the wheel turning , to early to dismiss him...

Its early in the season I agree, but its not as if he hasn't had many runners lately, in fact he's had quite a few.

This is the time of season he should be trying to have horses ready for, while a lot of the big boys are still not in full swing

have to agree with wr..far to early to say he wont have a good season..but what's a good season?..30 winners?..50?..weld has come out the blocks quick but he will have a bad patch as very rare a yard keep all the horses well enough to run well all year..

The reason he got off to such a bright start is that he was riding a lot of the winners himself.......ok not them all but a high proportion of them......but the retirement from the saddle has left a huge void.....one that wont be filled by a journeyman jockey like Niall McCullagh and definitely not by Ross Coakley.......even the daughter is getting rides and that is  utter madness.....
If he persists with bumm riders then he wont make the grade.....and im not sure he will make the grade either way......

Who'd have said Pat Eddery and Jamie Osbourne would have had the relatively quiet careers they've had I guess. He has chosen the most competitive environment in the world to cut his teeth in, in fairness. Would like to see him nail down a stable jock as well, maybe someone like Colm O'Donoghue?

You'd think he was too big to fail, but it would never surprise me if a newcomer doesn't make it in Irish Racing. Even very bright fellas like Marnane and Lyons can only seem to get to a certain point.

The fact that he wasn't born into Racing wouldn't help either I'd say. Oxx, Weld and O'Brien were all either born and married in. I remember ted walsh calling Paul Nicholls a mongrel after Tidal bay at Leopardstown, that is the mind-set you are up against, it's a bit like trying to break into the legal profession. Bolger is a self-made man but he'd be the exception. he has a good owner in Tinkler, but you'd like to see more.

Al;so remains to be seen how costly pissing off the Aga Khan will be? He has made a great start, I hope he makes it but you wouldn't have your life on it.

He has had 14 runners in past 2 weeks and not one winner, and we're not talking 100/1 shots here either.

all about the horses, if they are buying the right ones? then the wins will follow. take a look at what type of horses he has in training and their pedigrees, might find a few winners, when things start picking up. no doubt he will be a big success in the future,
only starting out so will have a lot of catching up to do on the established trainers in ireland.

Just to clarify. Johnny Murtagh had his first double tonight both ridden by Niall McCullagh and Ross Coakley. You couldn't make it up.

Johnny told them what way he wanted them rode tonight , reminiscent of the way Johnny would ride from the front at Naas  ...

Johnny was one of the all time greats. Make no mistake, he will be in the top 5 Irish trainers in the next 5 years.

Think he was getting a little worried that the winners were not coming sooner , he looked a little stressed tonight tbh The Gotchee , but all's well that ends well ..That Maiden winner of O'Briens is a monster , had a look at him and was most impressed , sure to come on for that run , he was very green , not that it was a great race ,   ..They will find it hard to win a race M/POWER , HES STARTING TO LOOK very one paced ...

We're all JPM fans but I don't think anyone on here implied that he would never train winners.
A nice double but a bit of perspective,a 7 runner apprentice handicap worth €5800 to the winner and another 6 runner handicap worth €6900 are hardly worth getting carried away with and including tonight's double JPM has had 7 winners from his last 100 runners.

Niall McCullagh is operating at 7% and Ross Coakley at 6% which are typical strike rates enough for journeymen.

I think the stable  might have turned the corner ...

Nobody takes any notice of the gobshiite......you'd swear murtagh won the derby the way the ghoul is going on.....two Bellewstown type handicaps run at Naas.....brings his total to 5 individual winners for the season.....these types of races are hardly season defining ones......he has to train a winner at some stage.....he has trained one less winner than Pat Flynn and one more than Tom McCourt this year....but then again the gobshee wouldn't be aware of such little details.....

Paulie , every stable goes through lean times , remember a certain APOB , having a shocking run recently , Harry Rogers also , and a few others ..So this year hasn't been great so far , everyone knew that was going to be the case after the incredible start they had last year ..Different ways been tried , Johnny now has more time to spend with the horses etc ..

Wonks.....a trainer is inevitably going to have a bad run if they are using jockeys who are not up to the mark.....and when the good times come then that trainer wont win as many as he/she should.....the jockey is a huge factor.....one which many here fail to realise.....
Part of the reason that murtagh isn't having winners is because hes not riding the horses himself....

The decline in Johnny Murtaghs fortune and the upsurge in Tony Martins could be related.

Has nothing to do with either.  Id say Carmody barely set foot in Murtgah's stable.

As for Martins fortunes.  He has got a few well handicapped horses from Newton Anner stud who were well handicapped before they entered Martins stable.

Paulie , Johnny is very loyal , not only to his jockeys , of course he would like to have a top class jockey riding for him , but tell me where would he get one that hasn't already got a top job in Ireland ..There is only a very small pool of really good jocks to go round ..Johnny will cut the mustard of that I have no doubt...

Loyalty will get you very little success at the top.

Mark Prescott spent 3 years getting Pallasator ready for the Ebor and didn't realise he had the winner in his stable all the time.

Mutual Regard was transferred from Prescotts to Johnny's who improved the horse by 14 lbs and it goes and wins the Ebor. In all fairness that is a fair training achievement.

Gobshee.....the ebor is a glorified jumps race.....3 of the last 6 winners were trained by jumps trainers.....rod millman les eyre jane chapple hyam trained the winner of the ebor......

Wally, if you can't accept that is was an excellent training performance( to improve the horse 14 lbs) you are a bigger t wat than I thought you are.

Gobshee.....the most important thing he did right was recognising that the duds that he uses as riders wouldn't be up to the mark for any kind of a decent race.......

The richest Handicap in Europe , fair play to him , just accept he did a fantastic job with the horse , Many a jumps trainer wouldn't win that amount in a year ...Spoke to him today and he was as modest as ever...

He is only 7 winners behind last year, but this has been a disappointing year when the material should be ever improving.

1 two year old winner from 32 runs is certainly not inspiring.

What's the story with Tinkler? Hardly ever see his silks on Irish tracks any more. That must be a big blow to Murtagh.

He seems to have really downsized again.

Started off with Dods I think about 9-10 years ago and then had horses with Hannon, Stoute a few other and Murtagh.

They seem to be back with Dods for the most part now although there are not as many of them.

The 4 that ran for Murtagh this year are all gone now and either with Dods or Fahey.
