The main TV news and its sports coverage is one black joke... we pay €160 per household for this. On Good Friday, little enough sport on as it was and they ran a short sports bulletin at the end of the news. I forget what the first item was but the second item (now this is a sports 'results' service remember....) was a basic feature hyping up the forthcoming Irish Grand National, sure we know this par5ticualr race in son next Monday, surely no-one on a results service has to come and hype this race? I'm sure the sponsoring bookmaker was delighted as this exposure of his brand, same bookie is reputed to be (or was) a devotee of Tony Quinn, but am sure he was delighted with this free advertising. Then we got a report from a guy who out at the stable of last years winner - this was 'local radio' material; woeful. Then one other item and it's back to the main news and some awful news-filler of a story. Now I havent mentioned (yet!) that last Friday there was a full SSE Airtricity League programme, both divisions - this got NO coverage at all. Not mentioned. There were some vital Championship games in England; not mentioned. Now onto Saturday night, a fairly full programme of events covered incl motorsport (yawn), golf, rugby, soccer and something else but the lead story in all of this in what was busy sports day was the 'big' headline story according to our presenter was that the Dublin and Roscommon footballling under-21s have made it to a final by winning the semi-finals; that's not a main sports story. It's woeful, every w/e we get this from an org we pay €160 per household.
My gripe -about which I have written before to both RTE radio and HRI -still obtains. On two days recently that I happened to be listening -the sports news slot in the middle of the Sean O'Rourke morning show never announced that there was a race meeting on that afternoon. The tradition has been that such a meeting gets a bare mention -never any expansion in terms of referring to the feature race or a few tips or interview. Now it seems it's just completely hit or miss as to whether it gets a syllable of attention. Apart from the scant regard it shows for one of sporting activities at which we excel -I reckon that with a listenership of around 350,000 + -such an announcement has the potential to put agood few extra customers through the stiles. Often people forget to look things up or are looking for things to do and anything that sows the seed of interest can bear fruit. It's not even committed racegoers that are the target but those who might be enticed to 'go racing'.
HRI should be monitoring the profile of racing in all media and should be raising hell on omissions like this.

I largely agree with the opening post but luckily from a sports fan point of view the bubble world that is RTE is is totally irrelevant and the internet has made them so.
RTE is similiar to the Tote i.e. an organisation run by those in it for those in it.
The internet brings information and opinions on the sports we love into our houses now . We are though stuck with the license fee as this country doesn't do change.

No reference to today's mixed meeting at Tipperary on this morning's 11.02 bulletin. Have written to RTE and to HRI ( enclosing copy of RTE letter) again to try to get this simple matter dealt with.
But I'm probably a lone ignorable voice -could some other racing-oriented forumites also drop a line to RTE -it will only need five or six sentences and might nudge them in the right direction. Racing is being unjustifiably snubbed by these careless lapses from professionalism and it costs nothing to fix it.

Although I often hear the sportsnews after the 11am news on RTE Radio 1, I wasn't aware of this ommission until Vubiant's post. Credit to him for writing to RTE and HRI and highlighting the situation. Following his heads up, I noticed this morning that the presenter announced today's meetings at Kilbeggan and Dundalk, also giving the time of the first race for both meetings.
Will be interesting to see if this very laudable practice now continues on a daily basis. I have a feeling it will. Well done,Vubiant.

Dont see or hear much RTE myself except in the championship season GAA . However I get the impression they are rugby afficionados , and other sports are guaged second rate .
Racing is so embedded in our sporting lives and in giving a lot of employment it should be getting a fair crack of the whip . A 10 second mention costs nothing and is often a matter of record , viz fixtures .

I wouldn't say that racing is embedded in our sporting lives Kelly. It is for those who follow it because it is relentless but for the vast majority of the sporting public it is a bygone era.
Even for punters the choice is so vast nowadays that plenty of bettors wouldn't see a horse from one end the year to the next. The public perception that you can only win if you have inside information is hugely damaging to the sport. It's only when you delve deeper into it that you realise that this is not actually the case, but few people are interested in going any further than picking one of the top 5 in the betting at one of the big festivals (Cheltenham, Aintree, Punchestown, Ascot).
Look at the recent program about Arkle where the whole country knew the horse and his exploits. Nowadays I doubt if 20% of people on the street could name 5 horses in training or even who won the Gold Cup or Grand National, but I bet they can tell you who scored for Real Madrid the other night.
