I've noticed a lot of bumper runners recently have had their first runners over hurdles and then run in a bumper. Horses with this profile often tend to run well and win also i.e. noble endeavour won a bumper very impressively over Christmas having been well beaten in a maiden hurdle. Noel Meade's horse is an example of this strategy today.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it a new thing that trainers are now doing or is there any advantage to doing this?

Dessie certainly seems to do it a fair bit, All Hell Let Loose won the bumper @ Thurles the last day having ran twice over hurdles and plenty more examples of him doing it.

Do you think there's any particular reason he does it Norn?

Thanks Norn, I'd say you could be right about getting the bumper win for sale value. Noel Meade's horse ran well in the bumper today against two good horses and he owns that one himself so presumably that one is for sale.

As regards Dessie, it seems to be something he does with nearly all his decent horses. If they win a maiden hurdle, I presume they wouldn't be allowed go back and run in a bumper then though?

simple explanation.....run it first time out over hurdles as a schooling exercise......jockey's feedback will be vital as to whether it is up to winning a bumper or not......if he says that it might.....they may go back for a bumper.....if it wins one great.....if not no harm done as it has the benefit of a run over obstacles.....when they go back over hurdles again.....some trainers use that method of training and I wouldn't see anything wrong with it.....
Another thing that could happen is that a horse may not be showing much and would be considered not worthy of a bumper entry......on its hurdling and racecourse debut it may surprise connections with its level of ability.....and thus they may decide that it could be competitive a bumper after all.....and decide to go back down the bumper route.....

if a horse wins a hurdle.....he/she is automatically excluded from bumpers......in Britain if a horse even runs in a hurdle....then they cannot ever again run in one.....

They were going to bring the same rule to Ireland before the population of horses decreased. Actually I always understood the reason a lot of horse went over hurdles FTO was
a) Just to get any type of run when balloting was out of control
b) Horses that had run over hurdles could not be balloted out of a bumper thus when Trainers wanted to pull the trigger in a Bumper they were guaranteed a run.

I didn't know that about not being eligible for ballot.....that may well be the case......
The same rule did exist in Ireland for a period......but was relaxed......there is a limit to the number of bumpers a horse can run in before being forced to run over the sticks.....id say a horse called the pounds reached that limit......

I say this is bull.Very few that run decent over hurdles first time come back to win a bumper.  I used to back them and gave up doing it.  Hughes has done it a few times but its a way to the poor house.

Much tougher to win a Bumper isn't it? Any horse decent in its work would surely take in a bumper.

You'd see a lot more dirt poor Maiden Hurdles than Bumpers.

id agree with the last 2 posts.....very often horses sidestep the bumper route because they are considered not good enough to win one......then they run well in a hurdle.....and they have a rethink and go back and try their case in one.....in most cases their first impressions were correct......

Interesting points made by everyone.

With regard the amount of times a horse is allowed run in a bumper, I'm fairly sure the maximum in Ireland is about 10 runs and the maximum in Britain is 4 runs in bumpers.
