Derek O connor goes over to Kelso today for two rides. First one up is for Donald McCain in the 2.55 on abbey storm. He only has one horse to beat on recent form imo, the panama kid who has won his last two very easily. O Connor is easily the best jockey in the race and surely he wouldn't be making the trip unless he thought he had a strong chance of winning.
This horse often goes from the front so hopefully Derek might take the bull by the horns and ride his less experienced colleagues to sleep from the front. One negative is possibly the form of McCain whose stable isn't exactly firing on all cylinders but it's still worth taking a chance on at 9/2 nevertheless. |

new approach.....that booking today caught my eye.....firstly I thought maybe he is riding this horse with a view to a Cheltenham race.....but this horse with a rating of 120 wont get into any race there......let alone win one.....its possible that he is over in McCains schooling other horses for Cheltenham for them......he just got touched off on one last year in a 3m Handicap.....its possible that maybe Corrin Wood is going for the 4m chase and he may be over riding that.....
it could be any reason possibly.....but one reason I doubt is that hes there specifically to ride Abbey Storm......and im not saying it wont win because it can.....as its a bad race.....and as you said he's light years ahead of the clowns that ride in these type of races.... |
|
By:
And another thing you were right about.....the stable could be going better too......
|
|
By:
Fair point Paulie, never thought of that. But it's hardly a coincidence that he came over on the same day as a relatively high profile mid-week card which happen to have two races confined to amateur riders only.
If he is schooling cheltenham horses, which seems a likely reason for him to go over, they probably planned it today so he could ride for McCain in what is a relatively valuable race by British standards. |
|
By:
yes as I said.....it certainly can win.....and the fact that he rides it gives it an immesuarable advantage.....he will do well to win on the yoke in the hunter chase though.....he may be good.....but he aint that good.....
best of luck to you......and for what its worth I agree with snap crackle and pop......long run looks on a sharp downward spiral.....its easy to see him getting beaten today...... |

Derek OConnor is the most overrated jockey in history.
Horses jump for him and he is a natural horseman but he is a poor tactician His record in bumpers is abysmal,he just can't judge them,to me he is a huge negative in a bumper. |
|
By:
I quite agree with you Wildman......in bumpers he isn't the greatest.....in fact hes downright ordinary.....but over obstacles he is very useful.....and against English country squires.....he's on a different planet to them fellas that are riding in kelso today......you need a bit of a brain to ride well in bumpers......there have been a good few excellent jump riders that were nowhere near as good in bumpers......Derek .....Jamie Codd and poor John Thomas are three to spring to mind....even Enda Bolger and John Berry were nowhere near as competent in bumpers.....
