EYE OF THE TIGER and Seven Summits, the first two horses in part of what appears to be a huge gamble, both won to reward their backers and leave bookmakers facing a potentially massive payout.

Four horses with links to former trainer and legendary gambler Barney Curley are among five significant market moves. Curley declined to comment when contacted by the Racing Post.

Paddy Power said they will pay out "the guts of £1 million" if the four win.

Eye Of The Tiger, who was having a first start for Des Donovan having previously been trained by Curley, won easily at evens having been freely available to back at 4-1 this morning. The German Group 2 winner was put in at 10-1 last night.

Donovan said: "We have had him seven months and have had problems with him but he is a genuine horse."

Winning jockey Shane Kelly added: "He was a good horse obviously in his younger days and he's done that well. I sat second to keep it simple. Des thought he'd win. He'd been off a long time obviously and has had his problems, but he felt good today."

The stewards enquired into Eye Of The Tiger's improved form and noted the trainer's explanation that the horse had problems with both his legs and back in the past.

Seven Summits which, like Eye Of The Storm, was previously trained by Curley won at 9-4, having been 7-1 overnight.

Christian Leech, owner of Seven Summits and husband of trainer Sophie Leech said when asked if the winner was part of a Barney Curley gamble said: "I don't know anything about that."

Asked if he had backed the horse, he said: "No. The prize-money is not bad, that will do."

Indus Valley, Low Key and Callisto Light, which unlike the other four does not appear to have a connection to Curley, have all been cut.

Taking them in chronological order, (6/4 from 4/1) makes his debut for Des Donovan in the 1.30 at Lingfield. The nine year old has been off for 481 days and returns on a handicap mark of 56 having made his British debut for Barney Curley from a rating of 112 just six starts ago.

Just 10 minutes later at Catterick, (2/1 from 11/2) has his second start over hurdles in the colours of former BHA handicapper Christian Leech. His wife, Sophie trains the former Curley inmate and the seven year old shaped with some promise on his first run over hurdles for two years back in June.

The other two runners that have been included in multiples with that pair both go at Kempton this evening with (2/1 from 15/2) set to go to post in the 4.25.

Also trained by Donovan, he hasn't run for 700 days since leaving the care of Irish handler Adrian McGuiness and he is rated just 45 having once been allotted a mark of 90 early in his career.

If those three have all done the business we could be sweating by the time that (5/4 from 10/3) lines up in the 6.25.

Trained by John Butler, a former assistant to Curley, the seven year old is fitted with a visor for the first time on his return from 350 days on the sidelines, racing from a mark of 60 having been allotted a rating of 88 when arriving from France just four starts ago.

Had a small yankee and accumalator on the 4 timer this morning, in hope that Barney was going for another one of his legendary coups.

Hope the last leg win for him, he is some legend. Money will help a lot of poor people in Africa.

I also bought my first car yesterday so it would be a big help in covering the cost of that.

I didn't get the early prices but would still mean a nice payout.

Took 5/4 on the first fella, he returned evns.
Took 7/4 on the second leg, he drifted out to 9/4.
Got 11/8 on third leg, returned 4/6.
Have 4/5 on the last horse, much shorter now 1/3 I think.

Here's hoping he pulls it off, it would be some strokeExcited

Leading bookmakers were quick to downplay any claims of a "multi-million pound bloodbath" after four horses with some link to legendary gambler and former trainer Barney Curley obliged across the country on Wednesday.

The bookmaking industry had been on red-alert from early morning after latching on to the well-backed quartet, all of which were returning from lengthy absences and struck at Lingfield, Catterick and Kempton.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "It was a bad day at the office, nothing more and nothing less. We dodged most of the early morning frenzy but you can't stop moving trains and we got caught up in some of it as the day panned out.

"Suggestions of a multi-million pound bloodbath are probably wide of the mark so we're not going to lunge for the violins just yet. Our decision not to price the Kempton races up until as late as possible helped protect us from the worst of it and we certainly weren't exposed to any of the overnight business where most of the fancy prices were snapped up.

"We are satisfied that the systems we have in place at our end are sufficient to protect us as best we can from circumstances like today. Ultimately we have a responsibility to keep on top of the rumours and trade accordingly, which we managed to do."

Coral's David Stevens said: "Although we avoided laying some of the larger prices overnight, we did see a number of multiple bets featuring these four horses both online and in shops, and throughout the day this number increased as word of the gamble that was taking place gathered momentum.

"Once the name Barney Curley was put into the mix - although there is no official confirmation he was involved - there is no question a lot of the bets placed would have been from punters with no knowledge of any plot but who were simply joining in the gamble.

"Victory for all four horses has cost us a six-figure payout, and based on our losses we would estimate the industry has been hit for something in the region of £2million, which although still costly, is perhaps lower than some claims.

"As bookmakers we will take this on the chin as it goes with the business we're in, but we would also look at the bigger picture, racing's share of the betting market is decreasing, and while some punters will have profited from these winners, plenty would have bet against them in good faith, ensuring it's not just the bookies who pay the price on days like these."

First up was Eye Of The Tiger in the 32Red Casino Handicap at Lingfield, eventually going off at even-money and cruising nine lengths clear under Shane Kelly.

Now trained in Newmarket by Des Donovan, Eye Of The Tiger was a German Group Two winner but had not featured in seven starts for Curley, the last of which had been when finishing last of 13 at Haydock in September 2012.

Donovan said: "He's had very bad problems and he won't run under a penalty. I used to work for Mr Curley and I'm in his yard. No-one wanted to buy him and he said 'do what you can with him'

The Lingfield stewards held an inquiry into the apparent improvement in form of Eye Of The Tiger.

Officials heard from Donovan, who stated that the horse had been in his care for seven months having previously been trained by Curley and its absence from the track was due to back problems and a near fore tendon injury.

Having heard his evidence, and received comments from the handicapper, the explanation was noted and Eye Of The Tiger was ordered to be routine tested.

Like Eye Of The Tiger, the Sophie Leech-trained Seven Summits was a former Curley inmate and made no mistake in the yorkshire-outdoors.co.uk Handicap Hurdle at Catterick.

Off the track since finishing third in a novice event at Fontwell in June, the seven-year-old travelled well throughout in the hands of Paul Moloney and while long-time leader Copt Hill pushed him all the way to the line, the 9-4 favourite was on top at the post.

Leech's husband, Christian, told Racing UK: "He's bandaged in exercise and when he's in his stables and we just have to mind him very carefully, that's why he's got so few miles on the clock.

"I didn't (have any money on). Someone just said that (there had been a gamble). He was 7-2, 4-1 in the paper anyway and Tony Carroll's was very well fancied and that was a non-runner, so I'm not sure about that. I don't know."

Indus Valley, also trained by Donovan, landed the third leg of the four in the perceived gamble in the kempton.co.uk Handicap at the Sunbury track, but the 4-6 shot had to work hard to collect.

Seamster was three lengths clear going into the final furlong but Kelly produced a power-packed drive to get the seven-year-old home by half a length on his first run for 700 days.

Donovan was also interviewed by the Kempton stewards, stating that Indus Valley had been trained on his own following a year's break, as he was known to be a hard puller in his previous races, and was better suited by being dropped back to six furlongs. The explanation was noted and the gelding ordered to be routine tested.

All eyes were on Low Key, trained by Curley's former assistant John Butler, in the final leg, division two of the Kempton For Weddings Handicap, and the seven-year-old made no mistake on his first start since finishing seventh of seven over two miles at Southwell last February.

Sent off at 4-7 and racing in a first-time visor, Liam Keniry's mount was always travelling with real purpose in the mile-and-a-half event and cruised up to take a gap at the quarter-mile pole.

Our Golden Girl ran on late but Low Key was a length to the good at the line.

That fat little prick that does the PR for Power's was on the RTE wireless this morning claiming they got done for €1M, why does the state broadcaster have to act like part of Power's marketing dept when ever they cover a gambling story, is why we all have to avoid paying the TV licence. I wish somebody in RTE "News" would cop onto the fact that Paddy Power's are a crowd of chickens and they wouldn't lay eggs. Though it has to said at least they are honouring their bets, though they are supposed to have the most sophisticated trading software of any Book and their losses are prolly small, they don't take losing so personally.

Were these horses kept almost idle for all this time waiting for this coup?
Report Distant View • January 23, 2014 11:37 AM GMT
How much did your trader friend get on himself redbait?

Surely the early signs would be apparent for those in the industry and the traders created half the momentum themselves, once the initial signs were there.
Report reb • January 23, 2014 12:07 PM GMT
Yes precisely, Distant View. The "1 million loss" does not tell the true story at all but it is in the best interests of Paddy Power Inc. to put it out there for public consumption. In fact, I would say that it is very misleading. The Net Loss on the coup would have been far less than the spoken of 1 million as PP traders would've acted accordingly to balance out their books on other horses.

Your trader friend might not lie to you, redbait, but he might, in the best interests of Paddy Power Inc, be economical with the truth.
Report Distant View • January 23, 2014 12:41 PM GMT
Many of the traders will also not have been acting in any interests other than their own.

They will have seen these signs and will have been helping themselves to prices (surely via mates accounts etc) at the earliest opportunity.

The last time this happened, the traders were some of the first with their snouts in the trough and no doubt it was the same yesterday.

I see that the books are taking no chances with Pipers Piping in the 5.00 @ Kempton.
I backed it the last time it ran for Butler on the assumption that:
* it was way too well handicapped,
* Kirby was back on following his ban for the ride on the horse in early December 2012 and
* Butler was the sorcerer's apprentice!
Couldn't touch it at the price today, but it wouldn't surprise me if it won - as with alot of Barney's in the past, at that price it will probably either win or be nowhere.
