Not to mention it is the final nail in the coffin for the town of Clones.

Haven't checked that out , 1.01 . I have no doubt it will look splendid , it's a good site and I have played there more times than I can recall , it is the overall concept I query .
Belfast has always had a good if not always successful ( winning wise ) input to GAA matters . As Casement is in Antrim ( as against Down ) mainly , the main interest in Casement comes from Antrim . I remember when it was being set up , some of my fathers friends had a lot of input into it initially and it was a welcome addition to the GAA fold , as previous venues ( Corrigan Park mainly) were not as viable for development ( played a lot there too ) . Cannot see Casement ever competing with Clones for atmosphere for an Ulster Final . Clones is basically unapproachable unless you are prepared for a day out , which I have always been , join in and soak up the atmosphere win or lose and throw a few bob to the locals for their efforts . Keeps the town going , fair play to them . Many happy days there . But £76 million might be better spent in other ways if anyone got a clean canvas with Casement only a part of it . Sharing a "national Northern Ireland Stadium " might be hard ( maybe impossible ) to achieve , but soccer , rugby , GAA could all share a 50,000 seater somewhere to better advantage if they all took a look at it without prejudice . That surely would make more sense . And be a better fit overall . |

Atmosphere at 1969 Ulster Final at Casement was comparable to any Clones final I've been to.

Casement is fine with me , li , but it has been through a lot of hoops since 1969 . Where an Ulster final is played should be partly determined by the 2 teams in the final . I was in Cavan and Monaghan over last 3 days , was travelling lateish at night through parts of both counties , saw about 2 cars in the hour or so traversing the counties . When I came across the border there was traffic( relatively) all the way until I reached my destination in Fermanagh . Trade .
The country towns throughout Ireland need any help they can get to survive . Otherwise they will wilt and die , and I am not sure we will be the better for that . So I would be loth to take the Ulster final away from Clones other things being equal . And its not just the final , there are a lot of other match days there too which might be shifted . |
