There is a serious amount of prize money on offer for this meeting but sadly Navan/HRI couldn't get one race sponsored. My local had a race night last week and every race was sponsored.
Anyway, leaving that aside, I believe the Grade 1 is a two horse race and Apache Stronghold is the one to beat. I will take a Navan Grade 2 winner over a Wexford maiden hurdle winner any day.
Although he is not the trainer he use to be I think Arthur Moore's Hop In should go close in the 12.35. E/W

Taking things literally, on a line through  "The Liquidator", BRIAR HILL easily has the beating of APACHE STRONGHOLD....
Granted, that was bumper form, but if the improvement is the same BRIAR HILL should come out on top...

if only it was that easy lol
Report Santry December 15, 2013 10:01 AM GMT
12.05 Tiger Trek dropping into maiden company could go well here at a decent price. Certainly a good place bet a 3/1 on here.
12.35 Hop In will appreciate the stiff track today and could go well at 5/1.
1.05 Even though Apache Stronghold a NR I still think there are enough question marks against Briar Hill re trip and hurdling experience to take him on with Azorian who had to do a lot of work last time .
2.15 I boil this down to Sizing Gold and Operating and will go for Operating who has run well in a few races recently and prefers to go left handed.
2.45 Golden Ticket may be a horse with improvement to come.

Good luck all.

The 2 Sizing horses one trained by very much in form Mullins other by the out of form De Bromhead and both ridden by a jockey that is riding not a shadow of what he was 2 years ago.Thought they both looked winners but dont like having doubts at short odds.Thought if Turnandgo and Faugheen could start at 1/10 and 1/9 that the last fav was up there with them when you consider he doesnt have to jump 10 flights of hurdles as Turnandgo did.Dont bet that sort of odds on myself but if your that way inclined.Wss giving  horses chances that shortened up overnight and this morning Mireya and Brian Who.
Report silvergreaser December 15, 2013 10:52 AM GMT
I'm disappointed that Apache is a nr as I was looking forward to having a few quid on this one today, actually its a 2 horse race now, will be interesting to see how Azorian gets on against Briar Hill with his form behind Apache last time.

Briar Hill won the champion bumper impressively but was it a bit of a fluke as he went off a virtually unconsidered 25/1 shot, did it surprise the Mullins camp that day?.
Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 11:19 AM GMT
It was a surprise..........some horses do it on the track and others do it at home on the gallops.
You can't just gallop the head off them and run them in races.

Well done lads, plenty of winners on these threads of late. This place isn't as bad as made out at all. Ozy, what would you make of United today at 4/5? I'm tempted as I don't rate that Villa team at all, bunch of Track & Field athletes...
Report Ozymandius December 15, 2013 12:54 PM GMT
I wouldn't bother Neill.  We should win, but not a betting prospect for me.

Our confidence is shot, poor looking bench, of our front 6 only Rooney and Januzaj have anything in their locker, Cleverley and Giggs might get run ragged in midfield.

Villa licking their lips imo.

Report neill d December 15, 2013 2:51 PM GMT
Not a bother Ozy, I'm taking a more disciplined approach to things gambling and have already wiped my nose and moved on.

I think this is more a reflection of how bad Villa are than any meaningful improvement from United. I notice with Villa that they often fall apart when they go one down, their chronic lack of creativity means they have to force things and leave gaps.
Report neill d December 15, 2013 2:55 PM GMT
Sorry what I mean to say is sometimes you just have to watch them win if the price isn't enticing enough.

Fancied one big-time at Wolverhampton last night, Solar Deity, he was beaten a head incidently. I missed all of the 3/1 on Saturday though having spent half the day in bed after doing the 12 Pubs. All I could get was 9/4 so I left it.

It was one of the proudest moments of my lifeLaugh
Report elvissss December 15, 2013 5:01 PM GMT
Villa are mostly a counter attacking side who rely on their pace players - probably explains why they fall apart when they go behind.

Richters with all due respect to Hurricane Fly what the hell has he ever beat?

His champion hurdle crown looks in some serious danger this year, at least this season he has to beat a decent horse?.

And if he does which I seriously doubt then maybe I can speak of him in the same breath as the king Istabraq, but as I said I seriously doubt Hurricane Fly would've got a sniff of Istabraqs behind as he disappeared into the distance.
Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 6:13 PM GMT
Similar pattern. I'm sure Hurricane fly would beat Palette, French holly, theatreworld, limestone lad.
Istabraq only started odds against 3 or 4 times in his career.
Report callitasucit December 15, 2013 6:38 PM GMT
Silver, Glens Melody getting stuffed yesterday has no significance on the rest of Mullins string. She is a decent mare, but was a poor price in yesterdays race. Them mares races she has been winning were pure useless. Apart from Quevega, the David Nicholson has been a lottery in recent years. All finishing in a heap, and anything could be second on any given day. When she faced something decent, Annie Power blew her away. And she too has plenty to find to be CH candidate.
And as regards Hurricane, yes he has never beaten a superstar, but that's not to say hes not close to one himself. I too don't think he would have beaten Istabraq, but not many would. I think he gets unfairly crabbed, and has been a fine ambassador. Probably the worst looking animal Willie has, but no questioning his enduring ability.

Great to see Jennies Jewel win a decent pot for small time connections today. See really is a very consistant mare and got the reward today. Shows the NH season can produce good stories. Unfortunately having backed her last 3 runs deserted her today-I enjoyed it though and well done to connections.
Report silvergreaser December 15, 2013 9:42 PM GMT
God Gant maybe I can say the same about you, you seem to have a cheap pop at me even if I'm talking sense, but maybe its the Meath man coming out in you, well we all know you cant stand Kildare.

I suppose it might have escaped you that Istabra was trained by none other than the weird one and I'm having a pop at Willie because I genuinely think Hurricane Fly hasn't had a real good horse to beat in his entire career.
Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 9:57 PM GMT
Why spout on about Willie Mullins because you don't rate Hurricane Fly, he is only the trainer doing a job for the owners.

I couldn't give a toss about Kildare and the edge of the Curragh syndrome but I would like to see your footballers win something one day.

The bit about you talking sense is funny but then again most of us are sheep who are afraid to ask the hard questions.
Report silvergreaser December 15, 2013 10:10 PM GMT
Hurricane Fly was all out to beat Peddlers Cross and Oscar Whiskey, what has Peddlers done since?. Won a few Micky Mouse races at long odds on, both he and Oscar Whiskey were pulled up behind the decent but hardly world beating Solwhit in the world hurdle.

Gets stuffed the next year on genuinely good ground by two of the greatest hurdlers of all time, Rock on Ruby and Overturn, wins 2nd Champion hurdle after getting woefully outpaced before staying on again when ROR started to wain after going off far too quickly on rain softened ground, and you can't see the likes of Our Conor, The New One etc finally putting to bed the myth of Hurricane Fly as an all time great?.
Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 10:22 PM GMT
All good horses get put to bed at some stage, it's what you do when they are your peak that counts......losers are easily forgotten.

Our Conor will get his chance on the 29th of December and if he is worth €1 million he should easily dispose of the opposition.

I didn't even realize there was even an Istabraq type myth about Hurricane Fly.

Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 10:33 PM GMT
What's all this hype about Glen's Melody, would it be in the top 15/20 animals at Closutton?. NO.
Report silvergreaser December 15, 2013 10:38 PM GMT
Its not the hype gant but its form has close links to the likes of Annie Power.

Glens Melody got beat nearly 30'L's yesterday by two Brits, might have Mullins scratching his head a bit that maybe the Brits have a pretty strong team this year?.
Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 10:54 PM GMT
She is 20lb inferior to the Cheltenham types.
Report silvergreaser December 15, 2013 11:02 PM GMT
Yeah gant but she would be a pretty good yardstick to gauge the ability of your better ones, so Glens Melody's comprehensive defeat yesterday has left Willie much to ponder over?.
Report GANT007 December 15, 2013 11:23 PM GMT
Maybe he will just have to work harder.
Report easygold December 16, 2013 3:28 AM GMT
Just to add this, the 3 C.Hurdles won by Istabraq where poor contests in my opinion the opposition where not proper 2m hurdlers at all. By a long way the strongest Champion Hurdle races were back in the 70`s 80`s very competitive with so many having an equal chance.

Yes Istabraq was a proper champion in his time, but by along way there where better quality horses running against each other.
Report Tolmi December 16, 2013 1:07 PM GMT
I'd say Glens Melody's defeat has not even registered with Willie never mind giving him something to ponder over!
Report silvergreaser December 16, 2013 1:45 PM GMT
Why not tolmi, maybe he sent Glens Melody over on a fact finding mission?
Report Tolmi December 16, 2013 1:48 PM GMT
I doubt he needs to send anything on fact finding missions.I'd say what he has at home will do that for him.
Report silvergreaser December 16, 2013 1:56 PM GMT
He hasn't got the English horses at home Tolmi so by running against the the English will give him a good gauge as to how his better horses compare.

Glens Melody might not be one of his best but he brought some decent form to the table, but the manner of his defeat suggests the English might have a pretty strong hand this year in the staying division?. More of That won cosily and looks a bright prospect, granted the French challenger was hugely disappointing, surely he's much better than that even allowing for the ground conditions, he was extremely weak in the betting and ran accordingly.
Report Tolmi December 16, 2013 2:30 PM GMT
Glens Melody is a mare who has limited opportunities here with better mares in the stable.I think its mainly mares he has sent to England so far as he has too many for the mares races here.I doubt he has any interest in fact finding missions.

Those who check how low a horse went in running should note that they are not always right.

Having laid Golden Ticket at 3.35 before the race, I got cold feet as they turned into the straight and backed it back at the best I could get which was 2.44. As soon as the bet was struck the horse dropped back like a stone LOL!!
Looking at the betfair sp's today I notice it said it went as low as 2.5 during the race which is obviously wrong. Take the lowest in running price as a guide rather than fact I say.

Not a bad crowd down there at all with Michael O'Leary in attendance having a great chat wtih Noel Meade and his brother Eddie after one of the later races. Maybe another non runner coup was being plotted. Only joking. Laugh

Thanks Santry.

They don't come much smaller, David v Goilath would look like a fairly even fight compared to the likes of us against the might of O'Leary Ricci and McManus Cool

Unlucky that you missed out yesterday, to be honest with the extra bit of depth of quality in the race and a few other things we were probably a bit less hopeful than we had been, particularly in Naas.
I was very impressed with McCarthy yesterday the way he adapted cleverly to the way the race played out, he's a smart lad and deserves more opportunities than he gets. Delighted too for Jarlath and his family, he's done a great job with the mare, no messing about and hes always in tune with her, he understands the game and has a real shrewd eye for where the opportunities are but always with the first thought to the mare's wellbeing.

That was one of the great days that make all the rest of them worthwhile. She's some game mare, long may it last!

Can't remember her hurdling exploits but I dont think she ever truly fulfilled the promise of those early wins. Nice broodmare to have now though.
On Jennies Jewel,it appears to me the 2.5 miles on a stiff track suits her well. Sure to get a decent hike now and will be rated one of the best race mares in the country. Graded races will probably be on the agenda. Best of luck with her.
That day at Naas I was convinced she'd won and was ready to collect a nice bet at 12/1. She got her reward on Sunday.
