ONY McCOY is just two away from the incredible achievement of 4,000 jumps wins in Britain and Ireland after a short-priced double at Kempton on Monday.
The record-breaking jockey, who is more than 1,000 wins clear of his nearest rival, heads to Exeter for three booked rides on Tuesday looking to reach the landmark at the course where he rode his first winner in Britain, on Chickabiddy in 1994.
Asked for his own thoughts on whether Exeter would witness history, McCoy said: "I've got three rides, but they are bits of chances."
His approach to the 4,000 mark has coincided with a number of special bets, such as the offer of 5-1 from Ladbrokes that McCoy will carry on riding to reach 5,000 winners.
McCoy advanced from 3,996 to 3,998 on Monday with wins in Captain Cutter (4-11f) for Nicky Henderson and Foundation Man (11-10f) for Jono O'Neill.
His three scheduled rides at Exeter are Flemenson (1.50), Keen Eye (2.20) and Well Hello There (3.50), all trained by O'Neill.
McCoy added: "I wouldn't say they are good chances. Flemenson, who I won on at Uttoxeter last time, would be my best chance."
Officials at Exeter are gearing up for a busy day with an expectant crowd and huge media interest.
Clerk of the course Barry Johnson said: "We are gearing up for what we expect will be a bumper crowd. I would certainly drop everything for the chance to see Tony ride his 4,000th jumps winner, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way."

I remember the hullabaloo over Stan Mellor becoming the first jump jockey to ride a thousand winners,he was batsman like in he was stuck on 999 for awhile,cameras were following him everywhere,he finally made it over forty years ago on a grey horse called Ouzo at Nottingham amid much fanfare.
Nobody then could have imagined it would have been possible to ride two thousand winners never mind the four thousand the Remarkable AP McCoy is going to achieve.

Sir Gordon Richards He was the British flat racing Champion Jockey 26 times and is often considered the world's greatest ever jockey. He remains the only jockey to have been knighted....Gordon rode 4856 winners,... in 1947 he rode 246 winners[still a record ..i think] A.P record for a jump jockey is unreal , he may not reach sir gordons amount of winners but his hunger for the game is Incredible .
He beat Gordon record awhile back Frank , having said that , in Gordons time there was no evening meeting , helicopters etc , so yes he did beat the record , but in my eyes Gordons has much more substance about its achievement .....

He is talking about the record in a season when he was on target for 300 at one stage.
He is a long way from the overall record and is unlikely to get there.
It is some haul though and I think it was riding Arden that Scudamore took over the record with a total which at the time they thought would stand for a long time.

yes workrider A.P had 289 winners in season 2001/02, but i have to agree SIR GORDON,S record is unreal giving its 66years ago[ the year i came into this world.

TONY McCOY moved to within one win of registering 4,000 career successes when his spare mount Minella For Steak triumphed at Chepstow.
McCoy had headed to the track for two rides and after his first, El Macca, finished out of the frame, he looked like drawing a blank for the day with his second intended mount, Mission Complete, a non-runner.
However the 18 times champion jockey was able to replace 10lb claimer James Huxham on Minella For Steak and the Jonjo O'Neill-trained six-year-old duly obliged.
Having been available at a general 7-1 chance earlier in the day, news of McCoy's booking sparked a gamble and he was backed into 3-1 before winning the 3m handicap hurdle by three-quarters of a length.
"He's amazing this horse," said McCoy. "He really struggles to breath and he has won twice on the heaviest going possible.
"I am pleased that Jonjo let me ride him and it is nice for Derrick and Gay [Smith, owners] who are good supporters of the yard."

Gordon Richards was riding on the flat which makes a big difference. AP may still very well break his record.

Appropriate that Thurles was also on today . AP rode his first winner there when apprenticed to Jim Bolger , March 1992 . Who would have thought that an unheralded apprentice from Co Antrim would become so stellar !
Only saw the last 3 furlongs, how fitting that he lifted one home for his 4000th winner, epitomises so many that went before. Legend. And an absolute gentleman.
i had mixed feelings when A.P. WON As i had a 7/1 winner going on to the 2nd horse in an e/way double P.P enhansed the winner to 15/8 so the shop sound more like cheltenham when A.P. got the winner up. WELL DONE TONY.

McCoy's often hectic riding schedule has been noticeably lighter than it could have been the past three days, reflecting his determination that his landmark winner should come in McManus's famous green and gold silks.
A delighted McCoy was led back to huge cheers from a crowd of six or seven deep after crossing the line first on Mountain Tunes.
The victory exhibited McCoy's never-say-die attitude as the combination looked beaten approaching the last until the champion pushed and shoved the winner back into contention, and on to that famous victory.
"It was typical AP," said the rider's wife Chanelle.
McCoy was treated to three cheers from racegoers before being sprayed with champagne. He posed for photographs with Chanelle and their children Eve and Archie Peader before remembering one vital job - to weigh in.
He said: "It's amazing and it couldn't have happened any better.

I remember where i was standing that day. Lad standing beside me looked at me like i had 3 heads when i said to him jumping the second last that McCoy would still win.
