Just say you have a horse in training with Noel Meade and he is a good one,you want to punt it but find out not only is it a short price favourite but Kasper Gutman has taken all the early prices, you are powerless and have to take it on the chin but if you are a big punting owner with many horses you can take remedial action.
The first thing you do is get the wrong word out, this entails doing someone close to you,the victims then start the gamble by taking morning prices and snaffling some money here, some of these gambles have a snowball effect, the final act is laying the beast at the death but not for too much.
When the horse loses the result is doubly pleasing as your Nemesis has been burned and you have got a few quid. There is a residual benefit in that the next time your horse is priced up the previous lost gamble will be factored in.
The best example of this would be Foot Soldier in a Leopardstown maiden backed to 2/9 and beaten although very little laying was done. Nephrite on the Curragh was another but this time with lots of laying and an old fashioned gamble on the second string. Green and Gold ones are harder to identify but are becoming more frequent, its now becoming an obsession down there.
Willie Mullins owners are nearly all non gamblers which suits Willie as he can do what he likes with them,he runs them for himself without ever backing them. Unknown to Willie fortunes are made laying and backing his horses with some good market manipulation,I always thought this would end when Willie found out and looked for a cut but its a leak that will scupper it,the younger generation are naive and indiscreet.
The days of big punting owners have largely disappeared , bookies nowadays are largely bean counters who follow Betfair markets slavishly , and the biggest punter allegedly in UK and Ireland has often indicated that he does not back his horse until near the off , and then largely on the exchanges .
Those of us who have been marginalised punting wise by the bookies know that the bookies wont lay anyone who is a serial winner or a shrewd punter betting wise . Why would they lay an owner big money without some form of quid pro quo ( unless thay have the owner / trainer down as a geese / swans man /woman). In the old days some trainers ( and maybe owners) operated "punter/ bookie friendly "accounts , what went on is anybodys guess . Transparency ( chalk elimination in favour of real money as evidenced on the exchanges) has eliminated lots of potential skulduggery .
Betting has changed forever . Drifters on here dont win as often as their eventual odds ( even ) indicate . Follow the money was always the old adage , personally I like backing horses with good form who keep hardening odds wise . Generally you are on a trier then .

The bulk of his horses including nearly all the good ones are owned by either Rich Ricci or Gigginstown.
Alberts son seems to be a Kasper connection between Meade and Mullins.
Kasper seems to have few horses there now.The bulk of his horses including nearly all the good ones are owned by either Rich Ricci or Gigginstown.Alberts son seems to be a Kasper connection between Meade and Mullins.
