Punters pay nothing towards prize money as there is no longer any betting tax.

Punters may not pay any betting tax directly but as you well know the bookmakers wouldn't be absorbing the tax if it wasn't for punters.
As for Rupert not being a well paid sportsman,I'd estimate that between endorsements,sponsorship,riding fees,prize money,retainer and his consultancy fees(which you have referred to previously),he's making well north of 500k per year.

A Formula 1 driver gets that per race.
I was comparing him with other professional sportsmen.
Bookmakers pay their tax to the exchequer as do publicans and shop keepers what the exchequer does with it is their own business.

I don't think shopkeepers receive a €60 million subsidy,€29 million of that subsidy goes directly to funding prize money.

The additional 1% tax on betting turnover was initially designed to reduce the subsidy and make the sport self funding.

Ruby Walsh is a very very wealthy man his share of the prize money in England and Ireland would be huge, how many years is he riding now?, not to mention all the other perks of the job.

Top jockeys are paid less than footballers, golfers, tennis players etc, but they earn more than many other professionals in other professional sports. Even journeymen jockeys make a good living out of the game.

Motorcycle Racing is dangerous, Boxing is dangerous, National Hunt Racing is dangerous, Gymnastics is dangerous, hell even soccer is dangerous many a player had career ending injuries, but nobody puts a gun to their heads, they do it because they love it and are good at it, in the case of most jockeys they were born into it.

Ruby has been on board for €37 million worth of prize money throughout his career,by all accounts he paid well over the odds for a farm in 2007.
Joeseph O 'Brien has already rode horses that have amassed €13 million in race prize money.

So that would calculate at 3.7 million in prize money and counting, less tax of course.

How many rides a year at something like €150 per ride?, tv appearances, sponsorship, riding out, add it all up.

If Ruby had a career ending injury in the morning he certainly wouldn't need to rely on the public to fund him he could live comfortably off the interest alone for the rest of his life.

Ruby gets a hard time here mainly because of his abrasive personality but that's his manner.
Lustrumm is a decent fellow but does he honestly think that Ruby Walsh or A P McCoy can stop and chat to all racegoers,does he realise the amount of Yahoos that accost these men for winners and then roundly abuse them if they don't win.

The figures quoted by Silvergreaser are wrong as a jockey gets 8 percent not ten,he has to for some unknown reason pay a percentage of that to the HRI.

The good news for Paulie and Silvergreaser but the bad news for any decent people is Ruby and his father made some very poor investments and have considerable debt so have to keep working hard.

Motor racing drivers are not paid millions because of the danger of the sport. They are paid millions but the sport attracts many multiples of this in TV rights, sponsorship and spectators. If if was not attracting the ultra premium brands it would not matter a jot how dangerous their sport was and they would be paid a fraction of what they get.

It was a great day by all accounts so all credit to those that went along, over 10,500 paid in. That is gutsy on a Monday.
