And takes some doing considering how poor it's become, I don't care what happens in the next 2 matches this year's football championship has been the worst ever, every day i pick up the paper there is one word missing from it 'Skill' all we hear anymore about is the fouls, the pulling and the dragging, not one decent game unless you count Monaghan v Donegal good to watch, i fell asleep. London getting to the Connacht final says it all about  the standard there apart from mayo of course. Ulster pffff, Munster pffff, Leinster Pffff all either rubbish standard or one sided.

Nobody can argue the Hurling has been streets ahead of the GAA football again this year except probably gant.

Kavvie yes i am, i would say for certain i've played the game a lot in my younger days, but please name the games you thought were brilliant this year? Please don't mention Monaghan v Donegal as being good football.

Grin And Neil Diamond can play as well.
Cork and Dublin was a good game,Mayo,s annihilation of Donegal for a different reason was a cracker.Would imagine the two games left also will be good ones. The hurling has been ahead alright possibly because it is more open with so many teams of near same standard. Nothing against soccer and like a decent game but the boorfest of the premier league for the next 9 months does nothing for me. Shame the championships are nearly over.

Thanks Pa for confirming there has been no good game in the championship this year, not 1 single match. It's so boring and as a man who has played it at the highest level known to man i think i can say that with authority. As for the jokes about Sligo in Croke park we're not the best but we're as good as Meath.

Nobody can name a good game from this year's championship, with only 2 games to go it must be the first time ever in any sporting championship we're every single match has been brutal.

Do us a favour Rocket as you are an ardent soccer follower, don,t know how many premiership games there will be this season,in excess of a thousand? Can you report back how many are a classic? My guess would be the percentage will be very small, though obviously a fairly higher percentage would be a good game.Good man.

Cardiff v Man City a classic from yesterday, next? All i'm asking is for one game that showed GAA football to not be rubbish from this year's championship, just 1 game?

rocket every gaa game in this years championship was 100 times better than the best soccer game of the day. to even compae soccer and gaa is not a level playing pitch.soccer is boring.its played a lot because you need a very low skill level to play it at a low level.

Kerry vs Cork , first half was better than Barcelona at their peak , purely because soccer at that level has virtually no physicality . Any soccer teams locally or in England aspiring to Barca level ?

There have been some good games this year , and Sunday next will be a very good one as neither team will play keep ball , they want to score . The main problem with soccer , rocket , is that it has become hard to score .  If a soccer match finishes 5-3 ( unusual) it has probably been a great game spectator wise  , but all the incessant off side stuff and fallers over in the penalty area , and dubiuos hand ball penalties detracts substantially from the game ( like overactive hand passing in gaelic ) .

And once again the hurling has been splendid all championship season , and a final to look forward too .

I agree that there haven't been many good games this year Nothing that has stuck out to me bar Donegal v Mayo which had a kind of car crash quality to it. The last 2 games should be very good though as it is 3 pure footballing teams.

Winner of Dublin/Kerry wins it for me. I've been really impressed by the Dubs and give them narrow preference but it would be amazing to see 4 or 5 all-time great Kerry players carry an otherwise very ordinary team to an All-Ireland. Mayo will have their hearts broken again, I don't think they have beaten anything this year, Galway are the best team they've played and is the line of form that gives them hope, not for me though.

Poor fishing.......Pat Dolan is right, you lads will have to stop knocking other sports, people who support and attend premiership teams/matches and try and promote your own little league. 5 months LOI gate figures in one weekend, get rid of the chip and get people interested.

Our Hurlers in Meath are far better than Sligo, I will have you know. In Soccer terms our hurlers would be division 2 in the UK and the Sligo lads LOI standard.......at least 3/4 divisions of a difference.

Meath/ Dublin was a good game. Dublin/Cork and some of the skill at minor level is very impressive.
Nice to see Connacht well represented.......they are often the forgotten province when it comes to sport.....2 Mayo teams in the final and the Roscommon minors have a great chance next Sunday.

The crowds this year have been very impressive.

Comparing Soccer to GAA? oh dear...

I've seen soccer matches where there is only 1 shot on target the entire game, no matter how bad a GAA game is it does not stoop to those lows.

If you want an example of what soccer regualry produces, watch the Man U v Chelsea game, "puke football" is the word

I think its good enough standard this year, and a few other matches, alongside the ones mentioned stand out for special mention. London had a great run and beat Sligo for a historic victory, going on to beat lovely Leitrim, and make their first Connacght final.

Also Kildare stood firm this year and brought Louth to St. Colman's Park, in Newbridge where in front of a full house (small capacity), they won, what was a tight game, pretty well in the end. I listened to this game in balmy conditions on a beach in the Sunny South East, and enjoyed it immensely. There is far too much training involved now to be playing the type of open football that Mr. Brolly, and Mr. Spillane yearn for. Both were great players, with Pat Spillane outstanding, but he would be a huge player in any county team whether its today or yester year. Its not about how you win now its just abut winning.

While they might not be the two best teams in the country but if you wanted an open and free flowing game of football then look no further than the Derry and Down game and these from the province that is much maligned for its negativity.

Down 2-17 Derry 1-15

The hurling championship might have been more even than previous years, but I think the standard has dropped a little, Kilkenny going back to pack helped by some high profile injuries, that Kilkenny supreme goal poachers only managed 2 in the entire championship suggests they were miles off their brilliant best.
By:
Rocketfingers
When: 27 Aug 13 08:42
The hurling is absolute miles ahead of the GAA basketball this summer, not even gant would argue with that. The cats may have fallen back no doubt but a lot of teams have improved all the same.
By:
silvergreaser
When: 27 Aug 13 09:16
Kilkenny scored 15 goals in 6 games last year and only 2 in 6 games this year.

I suppose the biggest disappointment this year was Galway, its hard to know if the likes of Cork, Clare and Limerick have improved all that much or just the likes of Kilkenny, Tipp and Galway way underperformed?, Dublin certainly did improve after their pasting by Kilkenny last year, either ways its been a much more open competition.

Lets see what the future holds.

Down -Derry was a good football game , silver , both teams trying to win by scoring more than the other . Obviously neither team has the players to win All-Irelands  , but it was a good match .

rocket i was reading bout the soccer game last nite chelsea and man unil nil draw..seemed like a very exciting game by all accounts?!?!!?..you were in the gym so u mightnt know?.i cast my mind over the summer and there were lots of great exciting games with high scores, great interceptions, great point and goal taking.honest endeavour by amateur players playing for the pride of their parish and county.the cork/kerry game was high quality, down derry as a joy to watch, dublin kildare first half was brilliant, dublin meath while it was close ,cork dublin, cork galway close to the final seconds, and in spite of your opinion the mayo/donegal game was great to see for the level of skill from mayo to utterly destroy the all ire champs.

Seen that too in the paper,a dead loss by all accounts and they are supposed to be two of the premierships best and rank highly in world club football,a few of the players on 100k a week as well.Is it that people are just falling for the media hype year in year out?is it bate down peoples throats through excess coverage in the sport section of the paper? is it just a money making racket for pay per view tv? Know what i,ll be watching on Sunday and it won,t be Sky,s "super Sunday".
You can keep your soccer Rocket until a cold wet winters afternoon when i will have absolutely feck all to do.
By the way keep informing me of when a classic took place please.
