Cavanagh or Gooch, totally different players who is the best of their generation? Dead heat imo.
Monaghan have just done something braindead and will lose now.

Unlike other years I don't think Tyrone can improve. They have just not the players. The Tyrone forward line is as weak as I can ever remember. I would say Tyrone have the poorest forward line of the teams in the last 8 and poorer that a fair few teams who did not even get into the last 8.
Who is the best player between Gooch and Cavanagh? I think Cavanagh is by far the player of the year so far, dragging a mediocre Tyrone team almost single handedly into he semi final, albeit against opposition which has not been very strong. Don't think another player in the country could have done that simply because they would not have been able to have made such an impact on a mediocre team as Cavanagh. His position probably makes that easier as Gooch would not be able to have the same impact in the same Tyrone team.
But if I was a Dublin supporter and asked who out of Gooch or Cavanagh would I think would add more to their team I would pick Gooch at his best as he might have more impact on a good team than Cavanagh.

Not my usual to be defending Tyrone . But Tyrone like the other 5 northern counties have to be cut a bit of slack given the "artificial" nature of political / social / economic influences at work in their neck of the woods . Thus evolving in the wee six sometimes was more about survival than progress . We all suffered for a lot of years when finding an O'Neill football in your boot at a road check meant spending a lot of time twiddling your thumbs while "sirs" identity etc was under scrutiny , purely for the sake of it . We did , but we had 3 big wins up to then to console us , they had none .
In the midst of that hiatus , Tyrone survived , and evolved , they used to be fairly easy meat province wise until the mid eighties , at which stage some new thoughts and able people began to muster their resources . That they evolved during the nineties to become "Team Tyrone" and finish up as a model for other counties in terms of the effort they were putting in at all levels is a tribute to them . But with an increasing weight of expectation inherent within a new "winning mentality " at all levels , success became of paramount importance county wise . And they got it eventually , and have sustained their play at a high level ever since .
But Tyrones success was based on system rather than sparkling players ( obviously with a few exceptions ) , and not everyone liked their style , it was largely based on containing the opposition and superb team work . They perfected the anomaly inherent in being able to move the ball down the field ( or across it) without kicking it in the air often , where their traditionally smaller players had a less than 50% chance of competing successfully in aerial combat . Thats possibly an over simplistic view , but it has a certain resonance , particularly to those of us with longer memories .
The Tyrone conveyor belt will no doubt continue to function well , they have great facilities and resources the envy of many other counties . Lets give them credit for raising the profile and performance of the GAA in their county , even if some of us dont like the product always . And they are in the semis , 28 other counties aren't .
Ref comparison of Gooch and Cavanagh , futile exercise . I would like both of them on my team though !

Agree with a lot of what you say Kelly but I disagree with the statement Tyrones success was based more on a system than players. Their system of play first caused a revolution in gaelic football when they beat Kerry in the semi final in 2003. It was not just a victory - it was an annihilation. But Tyrone differed from Donegal who would follow them in that they had three of the best footballers to ever play the game, Canavan, O'Neill and Cavanagh albeit their careers never peaked at the same time. Without those three players I doubt Tyrone would have won a single all Ireland.
I watched the Meath and Tyrone players stand for the national anthem before last weeks qualifier. Southerners might not like to hear this but standing to the national anthem means more to teams from the north than it does to southern teams. You could see that last week.
