Fancy Cork to turn the Dubs over in both codes, starting tonight in the football

6.2/1 for the 70-min double with Lads

On a separate note could the GAA not have played both matches on the same day - dream double-header surely

They would not make as much money having a double header.

Good match so far the football .  Dubs should be further in front .  But they are not .

Great game to watch but for Cork fans it is easy to see why someone like me living in Dublin would travel to Thurles at any expense to watch the Hurlers but could not face going 10 miles in the road to Croker for fear I would throw myself off the stand with frustration watching the footballers.

Cork are haunted to be still in it and it is good to watch but from what I can see they will be happy as usual with an honorable defeat.

Jeez it was ever thus with Cork. There should be a picture of every Cork Football team (bar the ones that Tompkins played in) beside the definition of the phrase "Headless Chicken"
30 years I am watching these type of headless chicken performances in Croke Park and in Munster finals

In the way that systems and defensive set ups dominate the modern game  , the art of putting the ball in the net seems to have been neglected . Reckon I know of a lot of past players who would have scored 4 or 5 goals tonight given the opportunities on offer .

Mild panic seems to set in when they see the whites of the goalkeepers eyes , just dont understand it .

Some great football tonight in this match , wonder what the score would have been if most of the chances had been converted instead of squandered .  The Dubs will click goalwise some day , maybe soon , guess they will be indulging in some shooting practice these next few weeks .

Great entertainment though , pity Cork have not got someone to play off their full forward .

They often seemed to handpass the ball into the net in those situations from what I'v seen Kelly. I think it might be something to do with the ball, it is very heavy and doesn't lend itself to the low placed side-footed shot.

Not talking about palmed or fisted goals , neill d  , a la 70's . Which strangely enough ( or maybe not so strange ) was when the basketball influence came aboard in my view .  Which led ultimately to the hand pass / retention football prevalent in a lot of teams nowadays . Before the recent developments we saw football like in tonights Dulin-Cork match , all the pundits were full of praise for it tonight , reckon some people have forgotten how much better it is to watch than 2 retention based defensive teams nullifying each other .

Wonder how many goals John Egan would have snaffled tonight ?

Good match to watch and fair play to both teams who played the game in the true tradition of the sport. I felt sorry for Counihan who is a true sportsman when he became emotional at the end of his interview on RTE. When he looks back on his career he should be so proud. He is in a different league when it comes to sportsmanship when you compare him to the likes of McGuinness and Harte both of whom will be remembered for ruining the game of Gaelic Football, with their negative tactics which is turning the game into a farce.
I lost all respect for  Harte when he publicly admonished RTE when they shafted Brian Carthy.
As for McGuinness, he has a team of talented footballers who can compete with any team in the country but he hasn't got the ambition or the belief to let them play football.
Let's hope a football team wins the All Ireland this year, preferably Mayo.

Always liked Conor Counihan, as a player against us in the days  when we were good , and as a manager who was 100% genuine . Unfortunately being Cork football manager sometimes becomes a bit of a poisoned chalice , given the proximity of a county who have always it seems had a conveyor belt studded with footballing stars . Cork might be a different footballing animal if they had been fit to dominate our western province and march unmolested into an All-Ireland semi final ( the old days ) .  But they have had to contend with Kerry down the years , and doubtless that has affected them .

Plus Cork are one of the few real "dual" counties , and most GAA fans like hurling and football , so its harder to sustain interest in both codes , and supporters resources become stretched etc . Given one  of their 2 teams to win an All-Ireland any year , more Cork people would I suspect plump for a hurling win than a football win .

Conor can hold his head up anytime , he was emotional in his interview tonight . Fair play to him , he is welcome in equal measure in any county in Ireland  , no one has a bad word to say about him . And he did win things as a player and a manager  , no one can take away your medals and your good memories .

You have it one there Kelly. As a former footballer I can attest that every single person from Cork is brain damaged from what Kerry has done to us and our parents before us on the field. That is why I referenced Tompkins above, it was not until he arrived (from Kildare) that the dominance was broken for a spell.

Another factor is the sheer size of the County. I would say most Counties would say by and large they have on or close to their best 30 in the County panel. Cork football is riddled with players who felt they never got a chance and it is always affected the dynamic in my view. Don't know how the same dynamic has not affected the Hurling panel but I guess part of that is sheer numbers. Football is a stronghold in every single Division in Cork from Duhallow to West Cork and it is an impossible task to monitor all the talent
Report Kelly August 4, 2013 11:08 AM BST
Tompkins and Fahy were 2 of the best "imports" Cork ( or any others ) ever had . Played a big part in their late eighties / early nineties teams .

Are the hurlers and footballers not "geographically " divided , lustrumm ?  Accept that Cork is a huge county , big spread , a la Donegal . Hard to cobble together people who sometimes might be deemed to live on slightly different planets from one another .
Report lustrumm August 4, 2013 12:07 PM BST
A common conception is that when the mix of Country and City Hurlers is right the Inter County team blooms and believe it or not the mix is there again this year. Hurling is by and large a City game with a strong presence in East Cork-Imokilly(which also circles the City into Inniscarra and Erins own. Any other hurler that gets on the Senior panel is probably playing Junior Hurling as that is what the Club is playing. Therefore any outstanding player stands out and is welcomed onto the County panel.

In Football every region is strong in the County with Senior teams in every divison. The betting for the Championship could be 8 the filed some years. Others also say that Nemo Rangers exert too much influence on the panel for 1 club but I am not convinced of that

In truth Cork needs a Manager from outside the County who is not swayed by the Politics of it all (I'l love to see Mick O Dwyer give it one last whirl and take them on for 2 years) He has always been an admirer of Cork and is famous for saying he would fear any 15 from Cork such is the pool of talent in the County undiscovered

that would be the ultimate irony.micko over cork!!..ive no doubt he would win an all ire with them tho.
