Colm Murray has sadly passed away. A great supporter of Irish horseracing. May he rest in peace.

RTE have issued the following statement on the death of Colm Murray.
The death has taken place of the RTÉ journalist and broadcaster Colm Murray. Colm joined RTÉ in October 1978, where he took up a post as continuity announcer. In the course of his sports broadcasting career, he has covered a large number of national and international events, including the Cheltenham Festival since 1990 and the Olympics and Paralympics in Sydney, However, he regarded his assignment with Jack Charlton’s Republic of Ireland soccer team in Italia Novanta (the 1990 World Cup in Italy) as the highlight of his sports broadcasting career. Although able to cross all sporting codes, Colm will forever be associated with Horse Racing where his knowledge of the sport combined with his exuberant personality made the sport accessible to all. From Cheltenham to Punchestown, Gowran to Fairyhouse Colm was the voice and face of racing for hundreds of thousands of race goers. Colm also pioneered coverage of the Paralympics and Special Olympics when assigned to both by RTÉ, bringing a prominence to both codes which they had not previously enjoyed. His warmth and ability to put athletes at ease saw him embraced by successive Irish paralympic teams as an ambassador each Olympiad. In March 2010 Colm was diagnosed with Motor Neuron disease. He continued to work in the RTÉ newsroom and embarked on a series of in-depth radio profiles of luminaries such as Alex Ferguson, Brian O’Driscoll and Johnny Murtagh. His journalistic professionalism and desire to assist others also saw him embark on an RTÉ documentary to highlight MND and assist in developing treatment for those diagnosed. Colm is survived by his wife Ann, and daughters Patricia and Kate. Ryle Nugent, Group Head of Sport, RTÉ paid tribute today: “It’s a sad sad day for all of us that knew and worked with Colm. He had an infectious laugh, a real sense of fun and a little mischief that has been, and will always be, missed in this office. His commitment and love for his work was there for all to see and he will be long remembered for his kindness, decency and caring of those with whom he came into contact. Our thoughts are with his wife Ann and all his family”. Noel Curran, Director General of RTÉ, said: “We were all really saddened this morning to hear of the passing of our colleague and friend Colm Murray. The courage that Colm has shown over these past couple of years has been truly extraordinary. The news is all the more poignant given the recent sudden passing of his sister Cathy, who also worked in our newsroom. He will rightly be remembered by the horse racing community for his enthusiasm and authority. For all who worked with him in RTÉ he will be remembered as a wonderful colleague and friend. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Colm’s family today.” RIP |

Sorry to hear of his passing. His younger sister pre-deceased him suddenly a few months ago and that must have been very difficult for him.
He liked sport generally but there was no hiding his passion for horse-racing. I remember hearing a joke years ago regarding his reading of the sports news on Six One. After the main news was read the camera would pan to Colm for the sports news - " In Sport, Ireland have won the World Cup, Sonia O'Sullivan creates a new olympic record, the Irish rugby team have beaten the All Blacks, but first to Racing........ |

I know there is no good time to go to your reward but in the week that is in it there surely will be a great send off for him in Galway. He used to come into our betting shop every day and was as sound as a pound. I look forward to the tributes to him during the week on RTE

Deepest sympathy to his wife and daughters and the rest of his extended family. They were no doubt expecting this day to arrive some time but it's still a very tough experience to lose such a lovely person. Met Colm in the parade ring in Cheltenham the year of Best Mate's 3rd GC -rain was teeming down after the presentation, he told me he was waiting for an Irish horse in a later race for a nice double (for the life of me I cannot remember which one it was, don't think it won, usual story for his tips!). The fact that its Ballybrit week makes it more poignant for his family. A good guy has moved on. |

I recall overhearing a very distinct, recognisable, mellifluous voice one day behind me in the ring at the Phoenix Park back in the day to realise it was CM using the most rugged and industrial of language near Sean Graham's pitch. I always liked him thereafter as I like my heroes with feet of clay.

Its not the going that bothers me but the manner of going something that applied to poor Colm and that dreadful disease,I am glad his suffering is over. |

That's the truth of it Wildman, horrible disease, which also claimed the life of Jimmy Magees son, Paul. I think the first time I heard of this dreadful disease was the time it claimed the late John Harty, who was another fine guy, and a very lovely person.

A pal of mine was first to point out to me that if Colm Murray was doing the sports news on TV he would without doubt find a racing story esp at the weekend with the finish of the main race of the day being shown. That wouldn't happen with other sports reporters unless it was an important race.
Also he mentioned to me during the summer of 2010 that Colm hadn't been spotted of late doing the Sports news on TV. I hadn't copped that. Eventually he resurfaced at Bellewstown at the August meeting when his good friend Brendan O'Ruairc made him go racing again. After that he got his enthusiasm back and was seen again in the public domain. It was Easter 2010 that he was diagnosed and he just needed time to come to terms with the cruel hand he had been dealt with. RIP |
