Having watched 25 odd years of test match cricket i have come to the conclusion that its a way better and more skillful sport than hurling....role on thursday..Its just a pity Eoin Morgan and Boyd Rankin haven't made it into the test squad. Night now. This weeks test match was by far and away the best sporting entertainment we have had this summer...

A brilliant Test match with plenty of skill but why the need to compare it with hurling.

Cricket in its proper form is cerebral skilful absorbing and leisurely.

Hurling is fast frenetic skilful and exciting.

No need to pit them against each other both brilliant in their own ways.

Cricket is to Hurling what GAA Football is too soccer imo. Hurling should be a bigger game that it is but it takes too much time for the average muck savage to learn the skills.

The Test match was magnificent and easily the highlight of the sporting Summer to date.  Sport at its very very best.

au contraire, wonky, I wallowed in the occasion.  It was EPIC.

I feel truly sorry for all genuine sports fans who are not au fait with Test Cricket. At its best, nothing compares.

Fine game I'm sure but in no sense superior to hurling as a spectacle or as a game of skill. Watching Andrew Flintoff's horribly uncoordinated attempt at boxing says plenty about the transerable skills of the game. He couldn't even throw a straight right hand having trained for 8 weeks.

I don't wish to denigrate Hurling in any way, nor will I.  Frankly I know nothing about it.  And anyway there is no need to demean one game in order to glorify another.

The beauty and charm of Test Cricket is hard to convey to the uninitiated. It has texture. It ebbs and flows.  Tactical permutations are fascinating.  A thinking man's sport if you will.  A quite wonderful way to spend a day.

I spent a few hours recently watching a game , It was a reasonable way to spend a few hours , but the repetitive nature of the game got to me in the end i'm afraid to say ....Not test cricket i know , well it did consist of a bunch of Irishmen  v a team of Indians...Does that qualify as a TEST ....?

It is spellbinding when the Conditions are right, unwatchable if not. The Sporting Gods granted us a classic this week that just refused to end. You could not have scripted it better.
I don't know that I would spend £200 sterling for a day to go to Trent Bridge (more for Lords) but I'll happily watch it on Sky HD and trade on it all week.
As long as the Weather holds the next 4 Tests promise drama as well for 2 well matched teams
Report workrider July 15, 2013 6:10 PM BST
£200 really , mad money imo LUSTRUMM , still we all have different values ....
Report lustrumm July 15, 2013 6:49 PM BST
cricinfo is the best site to follow cricket and the Cricket Board advertise there. So for the 5 days prices start at £220 for day 1 down to £150 for day 5 (remember it is Caveat Emptor if there is no play due to rain or the test does not go 5 days then it is tough titty)
I think the prices are off the wall personally although the Atmosphere is good no doubt. Add to that the rip off prices in the ground and Lords in particular is renowned as a rip off
Report Frank The Tank July 15, 2013 7:09 PM BST
Tickets don't cost anywhere near 200 sterling if you buy them in advance (not even half that price at face value).

No different to any other large sporting event, those prices would be reflective of the week and days before an event when supply is scarce and demand is high.
Report lustrumm July 15, 2013 8:57 PM BST
Jaysus Frank how many games have you been to? I've been to one as a Guest and when I found out how much my mate had give for the ticket I nearly cried.

Check out this link, scroll to the bottom and then issue apology please.

Several actually, and I was seated in the Lower Radcliffe Road on the opening day which cost me 80 GBP when I booked it in March.

So you'll forgive me if I am not forthcoming with an apology.

Been away for 3 weeks , missed the test match completely ( well Spain and Kerry are not exactly cricketing strongholds ). Apparently the match was a cracker , both sides having had chaces to win . But its not always thus , can be as boring as watching paint dry .

Comparing hurling and cricket is like comparing chalk with cheese. Different games .  Most hurlers could play cricket passably , few cricketers could play hurling . There are essentially 3 skills in cricket , batting , bowling and fielding . Hurling has a lot more essential skills involved . At top class level cricket is very skilful , but no more so than hurling , and hurling is also a contact sport , cricket not .

The advantage cricket now has is that it has diversified into 20 over matches , 50 over matches , and Test matches . Hurling cant do that .

Attendances at cricket are very skewed towards top interest only matches .  I have watched a cricket match at the WACA ( Perth ) and there were 4 people outside of the members enclosure in a stadium which holds 25,000 approx ( and 2 of those were myself and my companion --who is a member there and is related to the top cricketing family in Australia ) . Free entry . Have never seen even  a club match here in Ireland , hurling or football , with such a small attendance .

But cricket is world wide , world wide interest .  Hurling will never be , too difficult a game for starters , and nobody seems interested in trying to spread the game beyond these shores .

The muck savages were out in force at the weekend 150,000 paying punters in 2 days @€25/30 a pop. For the 3rd most played sport in the country by your calculations that aint bad. It would take you lads 4/5 months to get to that figure.
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl July 15, 2013 11:55 PM BST
Well last weekend was what's shouted from the rooftops, in soccer season, and that is Super Weekend....great games, in both hurling and football, our top players on show, big crowds, and gorgeous sunny weather, and next weekend won't be too bad either.

Cricket is just an advanced state of ROUNDERS,from whence the Yanks got their idea for Baseball, and they still play last ROUNDERS in Kerry, and probably in Spain too.
Report Kelly July 16, 2013 1:58 AM BST
Relevance , Jay Trump ? Nobody in Kerry or Spain talks cricket  , particularly when Cork ( the old enemy ) are on the horizon ref Kerry . Was in Youghal today , dont think I saw a Cork flag anywhere in the town . Plenty yesterday I suspect . Lots  of flags still flying in Kerry though .

The Kildare -Tyrone match should be good next Saturday , though lots of revenue going a-begging because of attendance limits .

Wise move Kelly to get away from the knuckle-draggers up there and their disgraceful carry on.Mrs Lapsy went to Redbarn a good few years ago and is still talking about it.Hope you had a good holiday there.
Not being a lot of grass in the city centre(Cork) as young fellas attempted to borrow the cricket club on the '****' for a bit hurling but used to get chased off,it had a lovely surface. The caretaker of "pres field"(rugby) was a bit more sympathetic and used to leave us play behind the posts. Can only remember once as smallies playing cricket as never had the appeal of hurling football or handball in particular.
Know a lot of ye are into the cricket which is fair enough,no appeal to me with it and couldn,t even tell you who won the ashes.

Twas a superb final morning/after lunch.  I think England rely too much on Jimmy Anderson.  If he has a bad time the Aussies will destroy them.

Pa , cricket was on the agenda in Hayes Hotel back in 1884 I think .  Some of those heavily involved in that were cricket afficionados .  But became a "garrison " sport , think that should be dead and buried nowadays .  But I think the weather has played a part , would be interesting to see comparative figures for sunshine / lack of rain in Ireland over last 130 years .

I grew up with the Aussie cricketers as my heroes in the cricketing field , Miller , Bradman , Lindwall , etc . Beating England most times , that was the big scalp . The Aussies could do with a few of their ability now , never know what is going to happen at moment when Australia take the field . And "England" now have a big percentage of their team non "native" . Things change .

Australia win the toss today and will bat first, with 3 changes from the 2nd Test

Still think England will win handy enough though
