By all accounts Danny Mullins has to receive an honorary Lester award for amusement factor, based on todays events#ambulancestealing!!!!!!

Nothing to do with this incident but not looking forward to him steering an aeroplane next year.
If he ends up in the champion he has to be at least a 5lb penalty against Ruby,AP and Geraghty.

A dopey thing done by a rush of blood and you have to laugh. 14 days  is a disgrace indeed as it's not a riding offence.
Report Miltonfield July 6, 2013 8:56 AM BST
if he had been at perth the day before and seen what happened to brian toomey he might have thought twice about abusing a service that is vital to him and his coworkers to satisfy his own impatience

Let me see taking a vehicle without the owners consent, not insured to drive the said vehicle suggests to me he got away with murder with only 14 days?.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 1:03 PM BST
Not condoning his action but this is just pure persecution.

Silvergreaser naturally isint satisfied with depriving him of his livelihood for two weeks he also brings up a point about insurance which is not applicable on a number of grounds.
Report silvergreaser July 6, 2013 1:07 PM BST
not a public road? if he didn't want to deprive himself of his livelihod then dont do it how easy is that wildman?, jockeys in Ireland are very leniently treated compared to other countries in fact they get away with blue murder most of the time.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y July 6, 2013 1:18 PM BST
How is is pure persecution?? Snap out of that ffs, if jockeys don't want to get banned follow the fkin rules and don't act the tw@t - it's simple. People can't do as they please in their everyday job so why should jockeys be allowed??
Report neill d July 6, 2013 1:22 PM BST
PF has it right.
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y July 6, 2013 1:28 PM BST
So because they are involved in a dangerous sport they should not have to follow the rules and can act as they wish??

Listen they are involved in a dangerous sport as they choose to be involved in this dangerous sport, not for our enjoyment but for their own enjoyment!! They are involved in this dangerous sport as they love the sport and it is probably all their dream job.
Report Miltonfield July 6, 2013 1:29 PM BST
thats what happens in real life. if you **** up in your job you face the consquences
Report pa lapsy July 6, 2013 1:34 PM BST
A head the ball moment just done on the spur, nothing malicious was involved. While of course he shouldn,t have done it,its a big penalty he got.Really think a stern lecture would have done myself.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 1:35 PM BST
I made plenty of mistakes in my working life but was never deprived of my livelihood for so doing.
I enjoyed my job but that doesn't mean I deserved to be treated like dirt.

Jockeys are generally trebly punished for some errors and sometimes punished when they haven't even made a mistake at all.
Its now so ingrained in racing that any mishap the usual crew are roaring for lengthy bans, its spread so much that a jockey got banned for being dehydrated and another got banned because the stall handlers loaded him in the wrong stall even though the error was corrected.

What's wrong with this country ? Always holding people accountable !!
Report dj876 July 6, 2013 1:44 PM BST
They're professional sports people(in the main obv.)and if they break the rules deserve to be punished.Any participant in professional team sports would be fined a few weeks wages if committing a similar offence.

The one big difference with Jockeys and other professional sports people is that Jockeys believe that they are unreachable and above criticism. This was highlighted by the "champ" AP refusing to do interviews with RUK after rightly being criticised by Lydia Hyslop for his considerate ride on Get Me Out of Here. The jockeys know they have this power, which fuels the gravy train and exacerbates the opaque and archaic nature of the sport.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 1:50 PM BST
What soccer player ever got banned for missing a penalty.

Its nonsense to say they think they are above criticism,I see them apologising for bad rides when it was nothing of the sort, read the comments on the last race at Leopardstown, the venom the vitriol from some show they could never be placated and those jockeys weren't even professional.
Report silvergreaser July 6, 2013 1:51 PM BST
So wildman if a jockey deliberately cuts across the field tightening up his fellow jockeys and nearly causing a pile up he should not be banned even if he endangered the lives of his fellow jockeys?.
Report dj876 July 6, 2013 1:55 PM BST
You have just moved the goalposts Wildman ,the thread is discussing what Danny Mullins done not what happened in the Leopardstown race.

If a soccer player is intoxicated while off duty and involved in a minor altercation he would face criminal proceedings as well as a fine from his club or if they are sent off they are suspended and fined.

Give me one example of RTE ever criticising a jockey??
Soccer players etc are rightly criticised daily.
Ted,Gleeson and Robert Hall nearly had a canary having to discuss the Edward O' Grady debacle a couple of seasons ago.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 2:02 PM BST
I put up a hypothetical case earlier so there are general points to make as well as the specific Danny Mullins case.

If Mullins is guilty of a crime let the law take its course.

Something done deliberately or corruptly has to be treated differently to a genuine error.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 2:06 PM BST
That's a fair point about the lack of criticism from the press, that's down to the close knit nature of the sport and they don't want to hurt people they know.
Report silvergreaser July 6, 2013 2:07 PM BST
Is dropping your hands before the line and getting caught by a fast finisher a genuine error wildman?, well considering the rules state quite clearly that all jockeys should ride out their mounts to the line?.
Report dj876 July 6, 2013 2:14 PM BST
I am not a jockey basher and couldn't care less about this incident or what they do away from the track for that matter.
I wouldn't have any great sympathy for them, they're doing a job they love and getting very well paid for it and wouldn't trust the majority of them as far as I could throw them-have heard  many an incident first hand of jockeys putting away connections.
I'd say if this site and the purple were down-U'd have a revolt on your hands.
Anyways,Tennis has started
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 2:18 PM BST
Its hardly a deliberate one Silvergreaser.
How do you know they all love their job and of what relevance is that,I loved my job but I wasn't persecuted for what some perceived as mistakes.
Report silvergreaser July 6, 2013 2:26 PM BST
Whether these jockeys are deliberately dropping their hands is immaterial its in the rules you've got to ride out to the line, so a ban is inevitable.
The jockeys are well aware of the rule but are often trying to be clever clogs.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 6, 2013 2:29 PM BST
Why only blame the jockey have you never heard of a trainer berating a jockey for winning too far.
That leads to another point that jockeys have to ride to instructions and sometimes their hands are tied.
Report neill d July 6, 2013 2:55 PM BST
There are two factors that would have me sympathizing with jockeys. They'd be the danger of the job and making weight. There are a lot of poor jockeys around making a decent living by dint of their size or familial connections. It is a shallow pool and as athletes, I'd say most of them would fall into the poor category.

Look at the achievements of someone like Johnny Murtagh who boxed as an amateur, and then imagine what someone like Paddy Barnes could do if given the opportunity. The opportunities the likes of Kate Harrington and Robbie Power get can only lead one to think that it is a shallow pool.

The two teams in Nowlan Park tonight will both have a lot more skill and athleticism than any jockey riding today, and they won't get a bob for it. Equine sporting pursuits are just Formula one with character.
Report wildmanfromborneo July 10, 2013 2:53 PM BST
Alan Sweetman writes a good article on this subject today in the Racing Post even though I vehemently disagree with his comments on the Leopardstown race.

Brian OConnor wrote a dreadful article in the Irish Times about this subject,it was naturally looking for longer bans yet were I to turn the tables and have him banned for incompetence for his tipping of losers he would be up in arms citing financial hardship.

So not happy with the physical hardship visited on the bravest of the brave most seem to want financial hardship as well without ever thinking of the consequences.
