my opinion of this geezer has always been, hes an arrogant, smug little bollix and after watching his love in with gay byrne,it has not changed.he claims he is from the streets and loves his country but yet his hypocrisy over his tax affairs proves hes nothing more than a bullsh1tter and a spiv.i will never forget when he stood on a stage between trimble and john hume  during the peace process wearing a fidal castro military cap(look at me ,i'm a great fellah and speak for the youth of ireland).as a republican i found it sickening!

Bono and Bob Geldof managed the neat trick of becoming champions for the poor by getting poor people to donate to their causes whilst they basked in the glory, furthered their careers and naturally donated not a single penny of their own.

Geldof give his time and effort Borneo and sold paintings etc etc

I found this  below, btw borneo to the Africans Geldof saved millions of Africans lives and if speak to any of the lucky lucky men on the beach when on holiday they call him Saint Bob.

"To make things even more difficult, the BBC was determined that its coverage should not turn into a charity telethon...

Precisely what organiser Bob Geldof wanted it to be.

After Queen had delivered the first show-stopping performance of the day, Geldof discovered that contributions were not coming in as fast as he might have hoped.

So he climbed into our little studio and demanded to make an appeal. In a break between acts I sat next to him and talked him through it.

He made his case as to why people should put hands in their pockets to help the starving.

“Fine,” I said and then, because I knew what order the captions would come up in, I added to camera: “Here’s the address...”

“F*** the address,” interjected Geldof. “Go to the phone number!”

Only one thought went through my mind. It wasn’t, as Billy Connolly had claimed, that at that point we were being watched by 95% of the TV viewers on earth – which would make me the most publicly bad-mouthed person in the history of the world.

It wasn’t that I was bothered by being spoken to sharply by Bob Geldof because that had happened before. Mainly I thought, “My mother is probably watching this and she’ll be embarrassed for me”.

In 1985 there was no procedure in place for dealing with swearing on telly. A TV producer in the obscenity-rich environment of today’s light entertainment asked me the other day how I went about apologising. I searched my memory. I have no recollection of apologising. Why should I? I wasn’t the one who said it.

No producer had ever told me what the procedure was when people swore because they never did. I’m sure that nowadays it’s the first thing they tell you when you start on Blue Peter but in those days we were just genuinely taken aback.

The day carried on. Geldof made other, even more impassioned appeals. I think he thumped his fist on the table at some point."

Classic Bob he helped the starving.

Bono is, in my eyes, possibly The Greatest Irishman of all time, I am immensely proud of him as an Artist and as a Humanitarian.

re the tearing up of the tricolour, who wouldn't be ashamed to be Oirish, at the time, the sh0!te that was being perpetrated 'in our name'.

The Boomtown Rats had broken up his career was in permanent decline and he hit on this publicity stunt whilst at the same time getting this feel good factor.

He has this in common with the bankers get a host of little people to give money and it causes little pain just like when the bankers managed to transfer their huge losses to the Irish state meaning the little people got done again.

Let me tell you something. I've had enough of Irish Americans who haven't been back to their country in twenty or thirty years come up to me and talk about the resistance, the revolution back home; and the glory of the revolution, and the glory of dying for the revolution.

**** the revolution!

They don't talk about the glory of killing for the revolution. What's the glory of taking a man from his bed and gunning him down in front of his wife and his children? Where's the glory in that? Where's the glory of bombing a Remembrance Day parade of old-age-pensioners, their medals taken out and polished up for the day? Where's the glory in that? To leave them dying, or crippled for life, or dead, under the rubble of the revolution that the majority of the people in my country don't want.

No more! Sing No more!

Every age has its massive moral blind spots. We might not see them, but our children will. Slavery was one of them and the people who best served that age were the ones who called it as it was — which was ungodly and inhuman. Ben Franklin called it what it was when he became president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society.

Segregation. There was another one. America sees this now but it took a civil rights movement to betray their age. And 50 years ago the U.S. Supreme Court betrayed the age May 17, 1954, Brown vs. Board of Education came down and put the lie to the idea that separate can ever really be equal. Amen to that.

What are the ideas right now worth betraying? What are the lies we tell ourselves now?

Africa makes a mockery of what we say, at least what I say, about equality and questions our pieties and our commitments because there's no way to look at what's happening over there and it's effect on all of us and conclude that we actually consider Africans as our equals before God. There is no chance.

For being shrewd about doing good, for rewiring politics and re-engineering justice, for making mercy smarter and hope strategic and then daring the rest of us to follow, Bono is Time's Person of the Year.

He's a strange sort of entity, this euphoric rock star with the chin stubble and the tinted glasses — a new and heretofore undescribed planet in an emerging galaxy filled with transnational, multinational and subnational bodies. He's a kind of one-man state who fills his treasury with the global currency of fame. He is also, of course, an emanation of the celebrity culture. But it is Bono's willingness to invest his fame, and to do so with a steady sense of purpose and a tolerance for detail, that has made him the most politically effective figure in the recent history of popular culture.

there are basically 3 points being made on this thread

1. you guys dont like him giving up his spare time to raise money for charity.......you sad sad people. this is called jealousy of a successful human being.
2. his tax evasion........we would all do the same
3. his anti republicanism.......well he was anti violence. i salute him there. im proud to be irish but i am not proud of how this state was run for approx 70 odd years. why would any unionist wanted to be part of a republic which was systematically brainwashed by a cult which has its own state in southern europe.

I loved all U2's early stuff it had that raw energy even though the pious lyrics on some of the songs were grating the music made up for that in spades, an Unforgettable Fire was the last album I ever bought of them. Once they broke America their music became much more middle of the road to suit an American audience they lost all that raw energy and then Bono became all self important and preachy which turned me off the guy for life.

I don't mind a pop star expressing an opinion through his lyrics but don't think you're some sort of modern day messiah, is it any wonder people have turned off the guy?.

They say breakfast with Bono is the most self important meal of the day!.

It seems that the forum would prefer their pop stars to be more like Mick Jagger...preening, womanising and living it up!

Bono choose to stick his head above the parapet in an effort to make a difference.  He has done so in a wonderfully accomplished intelligent way and is a great credit to the Nation.

It's no surprise that the n'er do wells on here begrudge him his efforts and success.

http://metro.co.uk/2010/09/21/bono-under-fire-over-one-charity-donations-totalling-9-6m-519721/

Bono has contributed as much as i have to africa.......f**k all. Africa has received over a trillion dollars in the last 20 years and still corruption and tinpot dictatorships are the order of the day. No money will ever change that.

As for how much good bono has done, it is very debatable. Its easy to stand on pulpits and lecture middle income earners to fire money at africa. Would be very interesting to see how much of his own cash has gone to africa.....  He keeps that a secret mind.

Looking at the link above and for alot of these types of charity, donations are wasted on redtape, salaries etc....and very little makes its way to " the ground". Look at the irish governments donations to uganda.......money well spent
