New and impressive runner.

Dylan Thomas correct as that line is a famous quote from the Welsh poet

El Gran Señor correct as he was named in honour of Horstio Luro

Celtic Swing correct that was the headline of the Racing Post when Celtic Swing ducked the Epsom Derby and went for the French equivalent( was a mile and a half race at the time )

Although Vincent OBrien trained many horses to be second the answer was not trained by him.

Salsabil won the Epsom Oaks alright but her daddy was Saddlers Wells who has no connection with Q9.

You have cracked Q9.

Zagreb is correct

The connection is Storm Bird.

A Tale Of Two Cities now find the homonym.

Report The Gotchee • June 25, 2013 11:56 PM BST
Is it Tommy Murphy?
Report wildmanfromborneo • June 25, 2013 11:58 PM BST
I would consider George McGrath a serious rider,he was stable jockey to Seamus McGrath and Vincent OBrien put him up on a few.

This lad is deceased was from Kildare and was a genuine workrider.
Report silvergreaser • June 26, 2013 8:08 AM BST
And he also has the claim to fame wildman of having ridden the great stallion Sadlers Wells to victory in the Irish 2000 guineas with Pat deciding to pick the 4th horse Capture Him ahead of Sadlers.
Report wildmanfromborneo • June 26, 2013 8:24 AM BST
He also rode Gregorian to win the Irish Champion Stakes for Vincent OBrien.

Silver surely you can get the Workrider question as he is an Irish Derby winner.
Report kavvie • June 26, 2013 8:28 AM BST
liam ward?or was he before eddery
Report wildmanfromborneo • June 26, 2013 8:43 AM BST
Liam Ward was a multiple Irish Champion jockey who rode the great Nijinsky to victory in the Irish Derby.

He got the mount on Nijinsky because he had a deal with Vincent OBrien that he rode all his horses in Ireland,it was a wonder to me that this arrangement survived the debacle of 1968 when Ward replaced Piggott on the mercurial Sir Ivor leaving Lester free to ride Ribero,Lester knew that Sir Ivor didnt really stay and he used that to make it a rest of stamina resulting in him beating Sir Ivor the 1/3 favourite.
Report wildmanfromborneo • June 27, 2013 2:08 PM BST
A few clues for the unanswered

Q4.This boy has gone to war
Thomas Moore is the clue here

Q5.Workrider
We have established who he is not but he rode an Irish Derby winner when he was effectively a workrider,he was from Kildare and is deceased.

Q6.Vincent OBrien was runner up.
This is a horse that finished runner up in the Irish Derby he wasn't trained by Vincent but was named after him.

Q9.The best of times the worst of times can yield two winners and the homonym can find a controversial favourite that finished last.
Victor cracked this by recognising the opening line from A Tale Of Two Cities this got him the correct answer of Zagreb as a city so we were looking for another city this is a more ancient one and this winner certainly wasn't wooden.
The homonym is the second word and we have established from Q14 that Storm Bird is a connection.

Q11.Sole five time winner
Soldieroffortune answered Lester Piggott which was correct but not the one I had in mind,my answer is an owner who won the race five times.

Report wildmanfromborneo • June 27, 2013 4:55 PM BST
J R Hartley weighs in with four quick correct answers.

The Minstrel boy to the war has gone is one of Moores melodies.

Scobie Breasley rode Santa Claus to win the Epsom Derby,Mickey Rogers took the risky decision of giving Willie Burke the ride at the Curragh,he was effectively a Workrider  at the time although he had won the Irish 2000 Guineas on him he had hardly had a ride in public since, still alls well that ends well.

The ancient city of Troy is correct of wooden horse fame,Troy and Zagreb two Irish Derby winners named after cities.
The homonym in this clue is Tale so make that tail now find a favourite that finished last that had some problems with his tail, the connection with Storm Bird is he had his tail and mane cut by a disgruntled employee at end of his two year old career.

The present Aga Khan has won the Irish Derby five times.

Some more clues

Q6.Vincent OBrien was runner up.
This is a horse that finished second to a record breaking winner,it was trained in England and owned by a former close ally of Vincent,he mischievously named the colt after Vincent.

Q9.This was a long clue with 3 answers with one remaining, the answer is a favourite who finished last, the homonym used was tale, the other clue was Storm Bird who was had his mane and tail cut by a disgruntled employee, this lads tail was the cause of his defeat.

Q10 Horatio Luro
This horse was named after this man.

Q15.Vintner
This is the new profession of a winning trainer and famous son.

Q16.Western Cannons
A horse and a cryptic clue, western can mean direction but it also can mean a type of film or TV programme,Cannon in this instance is a family name.

Q17.Arthur connects this winner and runner up.
The Arthur here is King Arthur and both horses were trained in Ballydoyle although with a thirty year gap

Q18.Name the one two that were owned by wife and husband
These were two horses trained in England  that finished first and second, the winner was owned by the runner ups wife and both horses had the same second name.

Brilliant Silvergreaser Careleon wasn't the one I had in mind but it strangely fits the bill perfectly.
Camelot is the Aidan OBrien trained winner but the Vincent OBrien trained runner up I had in mind was before Caerleon.

Q10.Horatio Luro
Silvergreaser you originally answered Nijinsky which although again wasn't my answer but as he bred him was correct.
Horatio Luro trained Northern Dancer and Was called El Gran Señor

Three more correct answers from J R Hartley.

Report wildmanfromborneo • June 28, 2013 10:25 AM BST
Linden Tree correct.

He was favourite for the 1971 race ,his tail got caught in the starting stalls so he didnt exit his stall for a bit,he was hopelessly left but vainly galloped after them.

It's now a two horse race
J R Hartley         9
Silvergreaser      8

One question left
Q18.Name the one two that were owned by wife and husband
We have already established that the wife's horse won beating the husbands horse, both horse were trained in England but by different trainers and both horses had two word names with the second word being the same.
