He is not riding well lately. He wouldnt lace Johnny Murtaghs boots, thats why he is up in Sligo and Johnny is in Ascot.

Pat Smullen is a terrific rider,he rides for Dermot Weld who has runners in Sligo and had none in Ascot, thats why he is up in Sligo and not in Ascot.

surprised that he gave up the rail so easily, could find it hard to win a race now.

jimeen and kavvie dont really understand racing. Smullen is an average rider who has a good job with DK Weld. Meanwhile J. Murtagh has rides at Ascot for several english trainers. If smullen was any good he would get rides for outside trainers at Ascot. Kavvie suggests Galway for Three Bells who has no realistic chance of getting into any race at Galway. What are these guys on? Smullen couldnt ride an hobby horse at the moment.

I agree their gotchee, but the important words are 'at the moment'. PJ Smullen has been brilliant for along time but has not been at his best so far this year. I was disappointed that he failed to hold off JP+Bye Bye Birdie in Mallow last weekend. The old PJ Smullen would have won there.
Note PJ Smullen at Ascot today and down to ride the well fancied Garswood for R. Fahey in the first and has a big chance, certainly e/w.

dermot weld is employing an average rider.he seems to think hes a bit above average and that will do me.dont be so sure about three bells not running in one of them low grade handicaps in galway..

Pat Smullen may not be riding at his best at the moment but just wait till Galway again and we will see the real Pat again . No present day flat jockey rides the Ballybrit course better. And yes before anyone comes on to say its all down to the Weld horses it partly is but Pat always seems to have his horse in the right place around there, be it making the running,up  the rail , on the outside he never gets into the same sort of trouble as many others around this unique track...Even the great K fallon could not get to grips with the place but in fairness that may have been down to his style of slowly but surely grinding his way to the front (straight too short )...Last week in July PJ Smullen will hold no equal.

...Last week in July PJ Smullen will hold no equal.

Thats because Dermot Weld has spent the last 12 month, or in one or two cases even longer, getting them handicapped. Weld is the Irish version of that underachiever known as Sir Mark Prescott. When it comes to Galway Weld is the thinking mans Tony Martin.

Aye Gotchee couldnt agree more re the Weld runners but someone has to steer them round a track that can hardly be described as anything close to normal, some ride it very poorly , some ok but Smullen is excellent.  nothing flashy or showy just has a wonderful ability to read a race well and keep out of trouble  be in the right place and win on many of these so called good things....have to admit that I cant get a handle on Weld at anytime of year let alone Galway....Gets beaten with 7/4 shot only to win next with 7/1 poke. Crazy  Same thing every year , get sense sometime.
