Good win for them against Louth but the sad aspect is that as their footballers get stronger their hurlers decline.

I accept history didnt start in the fifties and acknowledge the famous four in a row team but Wexford to my generation is hurling, the Rackards and huge support.Hurling needs Wexford far more than football does and I was hoping the recent Camogie success of Wexford would galvanise the hurlers.

Maybe the huge influx of Dubs into North Wexford has hastened the decline of hurling and increased the popularity of the big ball.

Pffffffffff Wexford is hurling, their footballers beat Louth by a point yesterday hardly evidence of a swing towards football. you like so many make knee jerk reactions to one off events.

Toby has a post  elsewhere on the forum about the Wexford footballers , they actually have quite a decent record and in my experience have always tried to play stylish football , sometimes pretty well . Plus a few brilliant fooballers who would grace any team in the land historically .

But like all dual counties , the total GAA effort gets marginalised in success terms by split allegiances . Never affected my own county a lot , the hurlers nearly all come from the "Ards" , and can only think of 3 or 4 hurler/ footballers falling into the "dual " category in the recent past.

Cork is the prime example of a county with "double" aspirations yearly , my own observation is that the Cork followers would prefer a hurling All -Ireland to a football All-Ireland success , given only one .

I grew up , like Wildman I suspect , with Wexford hurling pre eminent , Rackards et al . Not sure where they rank nowadays , but only Tipp seem to have the ( occasional ) fire power to challenge the Cats , who are undoubtedly close to being the "best ever" if not actually , debate sparked possibly . Hurling requires completely different skills to football , good physical athletes are beneficial in both codes , but there is still more room for the smaller , skilful player in hurling than in football . Hard to sustain highest level participation in both codes though , not sure of exact reasons for that , but history tends to re-enforce that view .

You obviously never heard of Mattie Forde

Wexford football has been strong for the last ten years at least.

One day you will get something right by accident.

You had never heard of Mattie Forde even though he was an All Star, just like you never knew that Wexford won four football All Ireland's in a row in the Great War years.

Stick to scouring obscure football forums and plagiarising stuff you find there.

Of course i know of Mattie Forde, You've never heard of Declan Browne Wildman? He's from Tipp as we could have said the same thing about Tipp a few years ago that you're saying about Wexford now. Now i believe that is game, set and match Happy

Spot on MP06, Browne who Wildman has never heard of even though he is also Tipp is a classier guy imo.

Kelly in Spain for Wimbledon this year but might catch the odd game although doubt i'll catch much of it.

Tipperary hurling is going well and hard as their footballers tried they never got close to the hurlers whereas in Wexford they are doing better than the hurlers.

Tipperary reached a few Munster finals but there are only six counties in Munster but twelve in Leinster.

I'm talking a few years ago when Tipp footballers got to a Munster final, declane Browne was Tipp's first footballing all star and you never heard of him. He also captained Tipp to the Tommy Murphy cup and retired in 07'. You walked into that one Wildman, when you're taking on someone who is smarter than you which is really anybody outside richters and wonky think before you type, checkmate.

I did hear of Declan Browne which is why unlike you I can spell his name correctly, admit it your not trying.

Obviously a typo as i spely Declan correctly in an earlier post. But there is no excuse for using your and you're incorrectly Wink

It's not that hard to get to a Munster final as there are only six teams although in fairness the last time they were only beaten in a replay.A lot harder to get to a Leinster final with twelve teams and some strong Gaelic counties ( okay eleven if you don't count Kilkenny) but that kind of makes the original point.

I used to travel to work by bus during the 1998 World Cup. On the bus I got talking to a German fellow. We would discuss the previous evening's football and would give our opinions on the relative merits of the teams.

One morning as we travelled along, after another football discussion, he said to me forcefully, pointing at a horse in a field that we were passing :

"You see zat horse in zat field ? "

Me : Yes

Him :  I say it is a horse. YOU SAY IT IS A COW !

as a Louthman Id have preferred if Wexford were more successful in the hurling this weekend. Spillane was very impressed with their forward line as a unit whereas back in Forde's day theyd have been looking to him to get most of their scores

on the hurling front its sad to see them these days barely scraping a draw with the likes of Dublin. was good to see the lad Chin turn out on both days for Wexford in each code

Wexford hurlers will be competitive again within the next 5/6 years. The post 96 years were a disaster but a lot of work has been done at underage level and the minor and u-21 teams have been steadily improving. They will come again.

Footballers are a decent bunch and should really have won a leinster title at this stage. Pity Forde not still on board, he is still the best forward in the county.

Jaysus I've seen it all now! Blame the Dubs for Wexford's decline in hurling!!
By:

That's an over sensitive interpretation of my post,I also used the word maybe.
By:
Goretski
When: 10 Jun 13 14:13
Wildman...it's irrelevant whether you use the word maybe or not...it baffles me that iyo the Dubs have turned Wexford into poor hurlers and better footballers!!!
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 10 Jun 13 14:17
It's a contributory factor, there is a huge Dub population in North Wexford and they would be used to the big ball so far easier for them to switch from soccer to Gaelic football.
By:
el gato
When: 10 Jun 13 14:23
north of the county has never been particularly strong in hurling.............imo the biggest contributory factor has been at schools level........good counsel and st peters have both had success with the big ball and little or none with the small ball............back in the day football was an afterthought in these schools....not so anymore
By:
Goretski
When: 10 Jun 13 14:25
I don't understand you point, where does Dubs being used to playing soccer with a big ball, therefore making it easier to switch to Gaelic football tie in with Wexford hurling on the decline?

Can i just say this is a brilliant thread Wildman, really enjoying you struggle painfully to explain your, lack of, thought process !
By:
wildmanfromborneo
When: 10 Jun 13 14:31
The Dubs down there won't play hurling leading to a decrease in hurling players but accept its only a minor contributory factor and think el gatos reasons are more valid.

By:
wildmanfromborneo

Your inability to follow is causing you trouble again.

Acknowledging El Gatos point is better is not a climb down neither is stating my point is a minor contributory factor.

Hurling is perceived by many mothers as dangerous so tradition is hugely important.
By:
Goretski
When: 10 Jun 13 14:51
Oh so now its the Dubs fault because they wont hurl in north Wexford! Wildman are you just another Wexford man who despises the Dubs and blames them for everything? It's was a silly point made Wildman in the first place, its akin to the Dubs saying we couldn't win Sam for years because all the country lads came to Dublin to attend college and seek work and wouldn't kick a ball so our Football team was sh@t!!

He seems to hate people from Dublin, i'm from Sligo Goretski and when he was 'trying' to insult me he would call me a Dub or say i was from there. It showed how his tiny little 'pea' mind functioned or tried to function.

I'm from Tipperary and I'm not blaming anyone for anything,I am just pointing out some reasons for a decline in hurling.

I am a hurling fan but accept it is far easier for kids to play soccer and Gaelic football as all you need is a ball, that is not a criticism of those games just an acknowledgement that they are easier for kids to play.

You should have said that at the start instead of insulting half the country. It's the rich elitist farmers like you wildman that annoy me. You even own your own tractor and baler in Sligo you are a mega rich farmer if you have a baler.
