All-Ireland-winning Dublin footballer Jason Sherlock has announced his retirement from the game.

Sherlock played for Dublin for 15 years, and last lined out for the county in 2010.

In a statement this morning, the 1995 Sam Maguire winner said his decision to retire had not been an easy one but it was "time to move on".

The 37-year-old said his football career had provided him with some of his greatest memories and it had "been an honour to play with, and against, some wonderful footballers".

Sherlock has also retired from club football with St Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh

i never forget when sherlock was starting out.it was in a championship game in o'moore park.some of the laois crowd behind the goal were getting on his back.shouting things like "chicken chow mein"  and so forth.and then he rattled the back of the net with a bootless right foot.it was magic!

Great hands and fine goal getter/playmaker, top class in every aspect of the game except for kicking points.

He was a decent soccer player and was unlucky not to get a pro contract with Liverpool.

Never rated him too small for GAA, very average, never saw him kicking a ball further than 30 yards.

Small but good . There were lots of players who could mark him though , which limited his contribution to a largely unsuccesful Dublin team in his best footballing days .  Lit up some matches though with his talent , and he was a role model for some of the smaller skilful kids/ players over a lot of years .

Always got the impression though that he was a soccer player turned gaelic rather than the other way about . And they are different games .

Honest player but too light and lacked skill - particularly in trying to kick a ball ! This essential requirement an absolute necessity in Gaelic football missing from his game.  But he could - and did score - a few important goals. Good luck to him.

a big part of the Dubs win in '95, but never turned out as good as expected imo. Played on for many years, was a competent inter-county player, but not great
