Steve Heighway is Irish ie.born in Ireland, but never played in the LoI. I still have a letter that he sent to me when I was 11 in response to a letter that I sent to him.

I remember that some Irish fans of the 70s were a bit disappointed with him as he appeared to play far better for Liverpool than he did for Ireland. I always felt that that was, at least in part, due to the fact that the Irish team didn't have sufficient quality in it like that first great Liverpool team of the period. Consequently the international opposition could concentrate more on nullifying Heighway than his opponents at club level. Mind you, he could do little wrong in this onlooker's eyes after sending me that letter. |
